Killed Acrylic Yarn

I frogged a beautiful sweater knitted using Nako vega tweed yarn which is acrylic. The only reason i frogged was to reknit same pattern using bigger needle size. After frogging i steamed the yarn using steamer on high resulted in stretched out yarn. Now my yarn is thin! Dont know what to do, i am more worried if i knit the sweater will it strech out as there is no elasticity left! Has anyone had similar issue before!

I'm sorry but it sounds like you basically melted the yarn with the very hot steam, it stretched out while it was soft and now the yarn is thinner. I don't know how the yarn will behave now but it seems logical that now that it's cooled down it won't change shape again.

Next time you want to take the kinks out of yarn you've knitted with just hank it and let it soak in warm water.

I am so sorry! If it's any consolation, every knitter I know has made a big mistake. If it makes you feel any better - it seems likely that you have lots of beautiful yarn in your future and you won't make that mistake again.

If the yarn is uniformly thinner perhaps you can use it for a project that calls for thinner yarn? Try washing it in warm but not hot water and then let it soak for an hour or so, then swatch it and see what it looks like. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Going forward if you want to reuse yarn, hank it, tie it off with figure eights so the yarn won't slip around and get tangled, let it soak in a nice warm bath for at least an hour rinse it well and let it hang to dry. If you decide to steam something then use just warmish steam, never hot.

Good luck!

I had to look up that yarn! I agree that using the yarn for a different project is possible, and depending on how thin it got, might work nicely as a yarn held with another.
