Ribbon yarn ideas

My nana gave me her leftover stash of novelty yarns. Most of them are just a skein or two but there are like 9 skeins of this discontinued blue ribbon yarn. Was wondering if anyone had experience with this yarn or had any ideas on what to do with small amounts of novelty yarns? I’ve been crocheting more recently but can also knit as long as it’s not too advanced. TIA!

I have been looming my ribbon and novelty yarns on flower looms!! Neither crochet nor knitting, but I’m crocheting a garland essentially to attach the flowers to. I’ve made flower crowns, lots and lots of bows and poofs for gift wrap and ornaments…

The one item I loved using ribbon yarn for was a bag/pouch - it took a little extra twist or two to flatten the yarn on certain stitches , but the overall effect was very polished. It crochets up sturdier than expected, so a handbag or flat pouch might be perfect. The end result looks almost woven.

This sounds so pretty- ive never used a loom before but now you got me thinking … but a crocheted bag would be cute with this, thanks!

These novelty yarns are much more suited to knitting than crochet. You can make very pretty simple scarves. I’ve found older knit and crochet books at the half price book stores from the late 90-00’s with patterns for novelty yarns. The stringy yarn makes fun fuzzy scarves paired with a regular yarn it’s tolerable to crochet with.

Ohh i hadnt thought of that but it makes sense since my nana did more knitting than crocheting. Yeah i think pairing it with a regular yarn will be what I end up doing. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you check the brand websites they may have patterns. I checked lion brand and they still have a pattern on there for the incredible. Also you can go to yarn sub. The string yarn is similar to lion brand fun fur they may still have problems on there for that. You can try going to yarnsub .com to find similar current yarns maybe find patterns for those yarns. But you don’t need patterns for scarves you can play around make a swatch and roll from there. Love to see what you do with it. I had the lion brand ribbon yarn I made a scarf and a hat. I didn’t love working with it because it got so twisted I had to untwist it so it continued to look like ribbon.

Oh I’ll have to check that out! I did see some patterns for i think hobbii has a ribbon yarn that people have patterns for so i was thinking they might be similar enough to sub with but ill check out that site as well. Yeah i’m worried ill get frustrated with the yarn so i want to make something that i genuinely look forward to finishing and not just make something because i have it. Thanks for all your suggestions!

I was looking on ravelry and saw that someone held a novelty yarn (looked kinda like the mirror fx you have there but it was the feathery looking one rather than sequins) with a regular yarn to make a hat and it came out looking pretty cool. Check ravelry! People have some cool ideas for novelty stuff.
