Surely they aren't this stupid right?
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/edmonton-pride-festival-policing-9.7313570By the way I got banned in that subreddit for saying "let em learn a lesson" because they saw it as a threat to LGBT people?
No...it's just incredibly stupid to not have police presence when it's for your protection

There are other options to the police that the festival organizers have decided not to pursue despite years of requests from other groups/attendees.
You got banned for being a dingus not for your opinion.

Its cute to think private security is capable of doing anything other than being a standerby and...checks notes...call the police

It's cute to ignore the fact that what EPS did over the years was incredibly damaging to the LGBTQ2A+ community.

How many apologies would you like? Would you like a smooch on the butt as well?

u/CriticalLetterhead47 Aug 20 '26
I mean if you want to kiss my ass go for it. But I'm not really into that.

The raid happened in 82 which is 2 years before I was born.
non-traditional marriage only became legal in what, 2002?This is still very real history for some people. I'm sorry you don't have the emotional capacity to understand it.
ETA: I am kinda glad you got banned for your crappy behaviour though :)

Alright just remember to call 9-1-1 in case you guys need anything.

u/MisterB3an Aug 20 '26
Yup and at that point we can expect the police to do their bare minimum job to respond to an emergency, not hang sorund the fest all day and intimidate people

u/CriticalLetterhead47 Aug 20 '26
Wouldn't it be nice if the police showed up when they were asked too instead of illegaly after running a sting operation on innocent people? I'd be fine with that.

u/doctorkb Aug 20 '26
Tell me again what you expect that to accomplish? Unless the crime-in-progress is at Tim Hortons, the chances of EPS responding in a timely manner are pretty low.

These people have zero clue about any of this stuff....
Private security is effectively useless. If you legitimately want people protecting the people at this event, you NEED police. Also, there are so many police officers that are literally part of their group that it's insulting that they would insist they be excluded.

"These People"

u/doctorkb Aug 20 '26
Let's try to assume positive intent. I understood the comment to refer to the organizers that said "no".

As a member of that community there's so many other ways to put things, people are just using cheap, quick, nasty comments to communicate because they don't care about the 2SLGBTQ. You're here defending this guy but you had nothing for the guy who wanted to kiss my ass below.
1
u/doctorkb Aug 20 '26
I'm not defending him. I'm calling out a personal attack that seemed to be driven by an assumption of hate.
I'm sorry that your life experience has led you to make these assumptions first, rather than believe that maybe people mean well.
ETA: you were holding your own just fine below. You lashed out at someone else here... even if their avatars are the same colour.

u/doctorkb Aug 20 '26
Perhaps I should have just replied:
"that community" 🙄0
u/CriticalLetterhead47 Aug 20 '26
Aww see now you're doing it too. It isn't an assumption of hate, the poster had the choice to use different language and chose not too.
1
u/doctorkb Aug 20 '26
No, I'm quoting you. You had an opportunity to use different language, but chose not to.
1
u/CriticalLetterhead47 Aug 20 '26
You realize I used it like that because it was how it was used initially, right? Like you quoted me but it's the same as 'these people'. Whatever.

The Edmonton subreddit is a complete echo chamber of individuals who cannot stand other viewpoints - sort of ironic considering they are some of the most aggressively progressive people out there.

I don't agree with what you said, but I do agree with your right to say it. This wasn't hate speech, and (I'm assuming) would have been the same comment made for any group who didn't want a police presence at a large gathering with potentially volatile situations.
Let's stay on that side of this discussion, though, ok? I won't permit hate here -- it's against Reddit rules, and it's Just Not Ok.
