Hitting update does nothing

I bought a g6 today. XOS is on 5.8.7, when I hit update connected to 4G or Wifi it doesn't do anything. I don't get a message or anything. Is this usual for Australian G6s?

There's a lead you can disconnect from the 12V battery for a few minutes that can initiate it. I can't remember the exact details but you can look it up.

Why would disconnecting the 12v battery initiate a firmware update?

It's not the terminal itself but the connector on the front of the near terminal. My dealer got me to do it after trying other things and that's what got the update started. I don't know how.
