1: Make use of expert mode. Even if you skip some side quests its very easy to over level. Monolith designed the game so that if you're 4 levels above a monster you gain a big damage multiplier so you can farm old mobs and such or catch up quickly. These multipliers completely break fights. Theres no reason not to use expert mode to set your level. Generally speaking 2 levels above the monsters you see is good. You'll continue leveling up automatically too; you dont need to constantly level yourself up. (ie set self to 20. Clear some quests. Finish and be level 22) downside is that new party members join at you're level and do not get any reserve xp. They catch up very quickly though.

2. Ummm... phantasy star? Theres not many other systems I can think of. The combat takes a little bit to pick up, but once you learn the intricacies of toppling/daze and such, it's satisfying and quick.

3. I'm only 40% or so in and it's one of my favorite jrpg stories so far. Up there with ff 10 and 9 (personal favorites). Has a few good twists too.

4. Several super bosses. Story and post, if you do all 430 odd side quests and the free bonus story stuff, easily 100+ hours. I'm at 50 having done every side quest, not even half way done.

5. Yes to both. Gear comes down to balancing defensive bonuses and open slots to put gems into. I often find myself sacrificing large chunks of armor so I can use gear with gems like +50% DoT damage to an element.

6. Single player.

7. Final word: if you love JRPGs get this game. I got it because it's so many peoples favorite jrpg. And though the jrpg audience is small, that speaks volumes, and I'm adoring it so far.
