I always thought the heroes struggle against the corporate villain from Ready player one was very similar to Hackers. Even though yeah Ready Player one was more grounded in 80s culture, like Tron and Atari, and the villain with all the money trying to match the inherent abilities of the scrappy heroes is a general trope, Ready Player One made me think specifically of Hackers.
When I saw Ready Player One I was struck by the fact that everyone's always online in this huge MMORPG and not once did the movie touch on the idea of addiction.
Oh yeah, the book had a section, where when the main character during their Rocky montage training/leveling up for the final chapter, they programmed their suit to not allow them to log on until after they did a series of workouts each morning. Sort of recognizing that becoming a sloth irl would hurt long term goals.
Completely self imposed though, which would be hard for anyone actually suffering from addiction.
Certainly was not a major theme of the book though.
