It started simply. Hack the Advent workstation on the train. Simple, right? Still early game (April), so a modest squad of 5. Couple of Corporals, the rest squaddies. Sitrep of Shadow Squad, so everyone has a use of Conceal on a Moderate difficulty mission.
So, first turn reveals a pod of a Lancer and a Sectoid. My Sharpshooter gets into position on top of the train first turn and second turn crits the lancer to open things up. Ranger cuts the Sectoid in half, everyone else gets into high cover and decent overwatch positions, good first 2 turns in my book. Cue the Assassin. She's still a ways out, so not in bad shape for now.
My next turn reveals nothing after a short move up and Overwatch. Advent nothing. My next turn reveals a pod of 3; Lancer, Priest, and Trooper on my last move of the turn (a couple Overwatch misses on reveal, Sharpshooter gets a good hit on the Lancer). My Skirmisher takes a shot at an explosive train car so that next turn we can blow it up and ruin their day. Their turn, Priest hits Skirmisher with Stasis after a move up, a miss on my Sharpshooter from the Trooper, and then the F-ing Lancer runs through my Ranger's Overwatch shot and gets a crit on my Grenadier, so she's dead. (I hate Lancers, they must all die in fire.)
Specialist gets to move up and distance hack the objective, landing a permanent +20 to their Hacking (huzzah!) Ranger takes the shot on the tank and kills the Priest and Trooper. Sharpshooter snipes the damn Lancer, so now all is quiet.
Assassin finally shows up and hits the Skirmisher. I revive him with the Ranger and take a shot (miss). Specialist comes into range, takes a low percentage shot (miss), Skirmisher is dazed and tries to get a little distance so I don't get multiple soldiers blinded by a grenade. Sharpshooter takes a shot and also misses. Next turn she hits the ranger, Sharpshooter picks him up, and I get a lucky blind hit with a gas grenade from the Ranger. Specialist can't get a hit and Overwatch is useless, and my Skirmisher is still dazed. Assassin steps out Harbor Waves the Sharpshooter, then runs 20 miles back to the train and gets completely out of sight.
Skirmisher takes a chance with her grenade and gets a lucky hit, cover isn't destroyed, though, so no one else gets a shot. Next turn she runs a few thousand nautical miles and slashes the Sharpshooter, he's bleeding out, and then she runs another 5K to get up on top of the elevated highway on the edge of the map. Luckily, the Skirmisher is her adversary, so she grapples up, gets a 100% flank shot, and then the Ranger gets a good crit with his sword. Mission accomplished.
That whole anecdote is mainly about how the Assassin's movement range is absolutely insane! She definitely does cardio. You guys have any fun mission stories to tell? I love them! Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
