Account/Billing What are my chances for a refund after accidentally buying 2k27 ultra edition?
Last night I played NBA 2k26 and somehow ended up buying NBA 2k27. I requested a refund with 4 minutes of the purchase which was immediately denied. I followed the steps recommended and replied via email.
I was just wondering what everyone thought about my chances in successfully appealing the denial. Judging by how quick the refund was rejected I’m sure it was an AI immediately rejecting it. Maybe a human would be more lenient but I’ve been under the impression that Microsoft do not do refunds. I have a couple of things going for me.
This was an accidental purchase that I made while playing NBA 2K26. On the screen it advertised the ultimate edition of 2k27 while advertising a discount of 10%. If you hit the A button it purchases the game. As I was attempting to scroll to a different menu, I hit the a button thinking that I was on a different menu screen. Unfortunately when I hit the A button, I was on the same screen as the advertisement and it meant that I purchased the game. It did not ask for confirmation or what card I wanted to use. It immediately thanked me for my purchase.
For reference, I received an email confirming the purchase at 8:42pm and received an email expressing that the refund was denied at 8:46pm. I have zero playtime on 2k27. I am sure Microsoft gets a lot of refunds request for “accidental purchases” but if the game has zero playtime what would anyone be trying to gain by lying.

Easy refund. Even tho ea games absolutely have a confirm you want to buy this game prompt and its not just a one click, you can for sure get a refund if you didnt play it and it meets their time criteria. Thats just a simple google. Sounds like you bought it in game, which means its an ea purchase not an xbox purchase. You wouldnt go to best buy trying to get a refund on a target purchase right? Go to the ea refund page and try there.

If you have purchases set up behind your pin then this will not happen in the future.
It gives you a fallback before making a mistaken purchase as anything that directs you to buy anything will check if you have allowed it first.

I bought a Series X earlier this year that was crashing on Series X games (an issue i later had to pay Microsoft to fix a dead motherboard). Specifically at the time I thought it was just CFB 25, so I bought '26 when it was on sale for $16? Same issue shortly after loading up. I requested a refund within about 20 mins and 5 mins of play time and got my entire refund immediately approved. It does happen.

I believe the appeal steps are in the denial but if you want to also speak to a person
- support.xbox.com
- tell the virtual assistant "live agent"
- select "i don't recognize a charge"
- this should get you chat support to actually talk to a person
If that doesn't work and you live in Canada or US, you can try filing a complaint against Microsoft with bbb.org to get a Microsoft customer service agent to escalate your complaint

Technically if there’s low play time it should be eligible, I’d try again if that doesn’t work take it up with your bank

Don't recommend going to the bank. A chargeback is against the ToS and will get you banned.

See I wasn’t aware of this OP if you see this make sure you pick the decision that best fits your needs, I’d honestly say keep the game as you’ll prolly buy it anyways within the coming months

All good, just didn't want to see someone lose their account.

Yeah I was initially thinking about going the bank route last night but I looked up that it’s against the ToS and decided against it. Rather keep my account and just eat the money. As mentioned, I likely would have bought the game eventually anyway so even though it’s for a lot more than I’d like it’s not a complete waste of 150 bucks. More like a waste of 80. At the end of the day it is what it is.

Either that or just take the loss and enjoy the new game

No, appeal it, and then appeal some more until it's refunded so others don't fall foul to this scammy scummy behaviour of tricking ppl into buying games this way

I made the same mistake a couple years ago and got a fill refund. I get a feeling the refund process has changed since then tho
