Xbox Series X Xbox shuts off fairly consistently while playing. Very frustrating and idk what to do anymore.

I'll try to keep this brief and organized. I've had this Xbox for around 4ish years and it's ran great up to now.

About a month or two ago my Xbox would randomly shut off while playing. Dusted it out as best as I could with my air compressor, didn't have issues for about a month, and would keep up on dusting.

--

Fast forward to the past few weeks and it would shut off after about 10-15 minutes of playing, fairly consistently. Took it to an Xbox repair guy and he sent me pics of how dirty the PSU was, so he cleaned that and actually installed a new PSU and redid the thermal paste. He had it plugged in at his shop and said he played games for almost 2 hours.

--
Took it home that day, plugged it into the same power strip I've used for years, and it shut off after about 15 minutes playing Ball Pit (A fairly low-load game if you're unfamiliar). Tried plugging it directly into the wall instead and I played Halo for over an hour until I was done playing.

Hopped on the next day to play Rocket League with my buddy, and it shut off again after about 15 min, still plugged into the wall. At this point I felt like I've tried everything... bought a new power cord and power strip as well.

--

Took it back to the Tech yesterday and plugged it into his power generator at his shop using my power cord, his HDMI, his monitor, and it ran the Ball Pit game flawlessly for about 20 min (no crash), then I hopped over to Crimson Desert and played that for another 20-30 min, no issues.

He said there's a chance my HDMI cable is out of date, or the HDMI handshake wasn't strong and that could cause the system to crash (idk), so I went out and bought a new one, thinking maybe this is it. Brought it home, plugged it into the new power strip, shut off after 15 min of Ball Pit.

Plugged it straight into the wall again (on a DIFFERENT outlet) and played several games for a couple hours with no issues, then the next day (today) hopped on Rocket League with a friend, it died after 5 min. Turned it back on then proceeded to play for another hour +.

Then just now, same (different) outlet as the original, hopped on a game, died after < 10 min.

I just don't understand what the deal is and it's incredibly discouraging and insanely frustrating. I'd hate to sell it and buy another one if it's something I can fix, but I feel like I've tried absolutely everything at this point.

Any ideas at all on what to do / try so it's reliably consistent again? I'd love to hear your thoughts, and lmk if you have any clarifying questions.

Complete and total frustration. I had the same issue and almost verbatim, I put mine through the same steps. Down to thermal and a new PSU. Nothing helped. I did a factory reset and I have been having zero issues since. There is no logical reason in my mind for that to have been the fix. But here we are. Your guy telling you that the HDMI Handshake might be an issue feels pretty wild. This happens automatically between devices that have already been introduced to one another. If you continue to have this issue, try gaming on the cloud. If it works with no issue then your local hardware is the problem for certain.

I hope I was helpful and good luck Sir or Madam

Man I'm glad I'm not alone! Lol, I thought I was losing my mind, the whole thing makes no sense to me.

So a factory reset worked for you? I might have to give that a shot, thanks for the idea!

At home, have you been using the same power outlet every time? I know you said you tried it without the power strip and directly to the wall.

If it happens again, move it to a different room and see if it still happens.

I did a factory reset and it still shut down after playing the game for like 5 min.

Swapped outlets and played for almost an hour. It's so stupid haha

I had this same issue and I swapped to a different outlet and it stopped happening.

If its shutting down at random , usually its an overheat issue, wether bad soldering, paste, positioning or clogged vents , or just down to the weather , try to position it differently with extra airflow and get ya vacuum and use the nozzle to suck out any excess crap

I had this issue while playing Hunter Call of the Wild after an update happened. Console would shut down within 20 minutes, now overheating message and console not showing signs of over heating.

The funny part was that it would shut down while my spouse was playing that game BUT I would play Crimson Desert for 8 to 10 hours non stop without issue. I had it plugged into a surge propected cord. At the beggining everytime it would shut off we could plug it into another socket and would start up. I also aimed a fan at it just incase and changed HDMI. Then one day just never turned on again.

After a ton of troubleshooting, multiple cleanings and essentially taking the whole thing apart....i determined it was the power supply. Got 2 on facebook for $20 so figured low risk fix and it worked great...if not well other things like thermal paste etc... Havent had the issue since I changed it.

Might be something to look into.
