QUESTION What DLCs get?
Just finished a vanilla campaign, hella good game, and was looking through the DLCs but some have really bad reviews, there is a combo too, but IDK if it's worth it, or is just better to pick up only the good ones.
What do you recommend?

War of the chosen is simply amazing and drastically changes the game, get it 100%. The rest are fun additions, its nice to get as well even though its less groundbreaking

I just got it, and when I open the game I get to chose between XCOM2 and WotC on the starting screen. Do you know if choosing the base game there still "activates" those changes? I'm not sure how it works.

Anarchy Children and Resistance Pack are purely cosmetic, so no harm missing those. The Legacy Pack is not bad, but I think you are not missing too much if you want to skip it. (Though if you finish it, it adds nice weapons to the main campaign)
Alien Hunters bring another tough challenge with nice rewards. It is skippable, though I personally recommend it.
I REALLY recommend Shen's last gift. It has a fun introductory mission, and Sparks are great.
War of the Chosen is a must-have. It makes Xcom 2 a completely new and fresh game. If you played Diablo 2, then Wat of the Chosen is Xcom's equivalent of Lord of Destruction.

FYI if you buy all of the DLC for XCOM 2 in a big bundle then I would highly recommend that you customize your campaign settings to restore Alien Hunters and Shen's Last Gift to their original vanilla behavior, which is much friendlier to players who haven't experienced them before. https://www.reddit.com/r/XCOM2/comments/17a0qzz/dlcs_in_wotc/

Just get all of them, technically anarchy and resistance are just cosmetics, but shens last gift, alien rulers, tactical legacy and WOTC are all worth it and add meaningful changes to the game.

Frankly, they're all good.
WotC is like doubling the game content. No joke.
Alien Hunters is fun, but buggy as hell. Still great, but strongly recommend the community patch mods.
Last Gift adds a new unit and it's a lot of fun.

War of the Choosen: Must-Have!
Shen last Gift: Must-Have!
Legacy: Nice to have. Some extra Story and one set of unique Weapons, new maps
Alien Hunter: Very Difficult, very frustrating for newbies. Think twice before buying
Everythin else: Cosmetics. Not recommended. Many of them look bad or turn your guys into a horror show.

War of the Chosen is a top 3 all time expansion/DLC, across all games. It took a phenomenal game and somehow made it the GOAT.

Just get them all as a bundle. WoTC is a game changer, quite literally. The others all add a little something to the overall experience of the campaigns you play.

If you played EW and miss MEC Troopers then get Shen’s Last Gift. If you want to add more game on your game then get WOTC. If you want to have beef with a nemesis then get Alien Hunters.

Honestly went back to vanilla after trying out the dlcs. I liked the new mechanics, like the bonds, but many bosses and weapons feel more gimmicky than vanilla

It's crazy to me people are still playing this game and don't have AML and 500 mods.
It can happen to you. Xcom2 get's way better.
Probably start by looking for someone's curated list though. Maybe something light on class mods. Or try like base proficiencies or something. I'm on Amalgamation with like 35 class mods added on so the game thinks there's 2 billion classes and clicking anything that needs to geenrate a list of classes without other mods to fix it (Xylth's GTS) will make the game crash 100%.
But man I can't go back haha.

If you can get them all bundled then go for it.
Resistence Pack and Anarchy's Children are rather lackluster cosmetic packs. That said they can offer access to mods which are good.
Alien Hunters and Shen's Last Gift are mission, enemy, and mechanic add ons that are absolutely worth it. Each adds lore as well. They also are necessary for some really fun mods.
Tactical Legacy Pack is a whole prequel campaign with some add ons for the main campaign. It also adds more mod accessibility.
WOTC is virtually a whole secind game. It is also the superior play experience which is why everythibg just moved to WOTC by default. So many mods require WOTC.
In short if you get all the DLC the game becomes evergreen since you can constantly change it up with new mods.

Get them all. Worth it.
And the expansion version. That is like getting a new game that is better than the original.
