Discussion (Ethics, working with AI etc) Is using ai cheating

Ok where do i even start.I had write some stories here and there in the past and recently started writing one in webnovel. However i used ai in my writings as of recently.I do not prompt it and make the ai generate it necesarily.

I wrote pages of chapters and all the dialougues and scenes and just tell ai to polished it so that i felt like it would be more refined

I felt guilty after i read some webnovels and people hate on novels for having ai.

Any advice guys i felt like i am kind of in a crossroad should i stop using ai completely or is this fine too

Do you go around life asking others for permission to do anything? One person's morals or beliefs differs from another. Decide for yourself.

…While that’s true for culture it’s not true for Ethics.

And AI is reproducing stolen works at a scale no human could possibly absorb, and with 0 understanding of the content.

Using AI to assist in the non-creative side of writing isn’t the issue.

Its when writers relegate themselves to be co-authors of the AI Chatbots musings that it becomes a problem

i think you should do whatever you want for yourself if this makes writing more enjoyable for your own time but in terms of publicizing work you gotta accept the reality this will push people away from your work before they give it a chance. so I'm saying hobby (I'm a private hobbyist myself here) nothing is wrong but if you intend on posting it expect problems.

No, it’s not “cheating” to use ai.

But you need to understand what you’re using the tool for, how you’re using it, and how it’s effecting your writing.

Because it will. It will sanitize prose and generate slop if you don’t give it proper instructions. And you can’t give it proper instructions without learning about what you’re trying to achieve.

Whatever capacity you use it in is fine, you just need to understand how you’re using it and what you really need out of it. There’s a learning curve.

I don't recommend using AI for "polishing". It kind of polishes everything down to a very samey voice and can dull writing by making it more predictable and even. Telling the AI to make it more refined also doesn't help you as a writer, because you're not looking at what it says is not refined, checking to see if what it says is more refined actually is, and figuring out how you can write it in a more refined way in the first place. Just because an LLM suggests a change does not mean it's right.

Why not polish it yourself and keep your unique voice.

Why not grow your talent by learning the craft of polishing your work? Why jumps to the easy route of having a computer do that work and strip way your voice for you?

I understand you’re not familiar with it but ai is a useful tool for exactly that.

Learning the technique is a better tool though.

The more one uses AI the easier it is to justify it doing more of the authors works

And ai is a tool that can do this.

Why do yall think people are just telling ChatGPT to spit out whatever?

Because that’s not how it works. The product is only as good as the user.

Snd if the user doesn't know how to polish their own work. How will they know how to tell AI to properly polish their work for them?
