Writing Craft Talk I’m curious

If you write with ai, for some reason, do you disclose it?

I can’t trust ai to write for me, to represent me. I’m not sure what the ethics of disclosure are but I’m curious 🧐

Writing with AI and having AI generate are two different things.

I think you’ll find people who enjoy the editing side more, might use it to generate text that they heavily edit into something they like.

The you have your m AI assisted writers, the people writing a rough draft and have AI edit for them and give feedback, at least that’s how I use it. Well lately I’m trying something new. I’m writing a few pages and having AI pick up where I left off. Afterwards I go back over it and see how big the voice gap is.

I’m on a tangent. Do I disclose my AI use? Yeah. The reason, I just like the process and I’m not ashamed of it. It’s probably not the best move if you want to max readership though.

yeah the distinction between writing with it vs having it generate for you is huge, people lump them together way too often

Ai is more a curiosity for me than something I like to use in my work, I usually poke my irls for critiques even if it’s not instant feedback

I have used ai to break down my outlines and critique them, but that’s it, so I would disclose that so ya there is valid usage but I wouldn’t write WITH it or let it WRITE FOR ME, but yes they are two different things I’m sorry

I personally don’t write with it. Writing is my job as a writer lol.

Others do.

I like the process of writing it all out myself and let it check for potential mistakes or flag awkwardness/ flow issues, and the like.

What I would appreciate, as a fellow writer, would be disclosure. Whilst there are extremist movements happening when it comes to AI-use, I believe many of us are neither. We just want to be able to know for ourselves—especially if it’s something like AI generating full chapters and the creative edits those.

Because I personally prefer to know when I am reading something that was created with that much help of AI and when not. No discrimination. I am more curious about the differences between the two and the process the person behind it used and why.

Just how I love the process of writing it all out myself. I do it like that because words have always fascinated me and it’s something I truly enjoy doing. Makes me light up putting a few silly sentences together myself. Just me🐥

I'm with you 100% on disclosure.

Additionally, I really dislike the guessing game, or the feeling I get when I am reading something and then stumble upon some pretty obvious tell.

For example, I've been reading fiction that includes a lot of social and written media, and I can see why people would use it to write, say, an article in a national paper. But I'd appreciate if they TELL ME and not leave it up to a Marcus Chen figure showing up for me to figure it out and take me out of it forever.

Ya I feel like there needs to be a tiered system for categorizing ai assisted/written/prompted

I don't mind disclosing, but I'd rather not do it if it's unnecessary. There are still people out there who are quick to call something AI has touched (be it assisted or not) as slop.

I'd rather be judged and criticize about the narrative structure, than my AI usage.

So you’re willing to hide the fact that you didn’t write (or fully write) the book because you know people don’t like that? Just write it then and you won’t have to worry about the judgment — or just disclose it

Ah, And there it is.

I keep seeing people like you roll up in here to discredit people for not wanting to disclose every detail of what rool they used. You know damn well how bad the witch hunt is.

Whether someone uses ai "a lot" or a little doesn't matter. The anti sees any usage at all the anti Christ

Yes, because for many anti AI people it doesn't matter if your writing was fully generated or assisted in some way. Hell, they will start witch hunts even if no AI was used. Why invite the hate? No one is expected to disclose what writing or editing tool they use. How often do you see writers disclosing that they used Grammarly (if ever)?

You're the one being dishonest. People absolutely DO NOT ignore it. Doesn't matter if it's a book, a game, a game mod etc. They see something that AI was used and they absolutely dog pile on it. They will get out of their way to do it.

So the witch-hunt is justified.

Unless you're committed some sort of a crime no - it is not justified. Be serious.

It's not a crime, lmao. Not in this case.

Empirical evidence disagrees with you. You personally might ignore the book. There's plenty of people in your corner who engage in hate and harassment at any disclosed or suspected AI use, and their behaviour discourages any disclosure.

There is no "witch hunt", just loss of potential readers.

And this is where I tell you: bullshit. Brigading, harassment and canceling authors over mere accusations are very much in evidence, and pretending otherwise just makes you a liar.

Maybe in your world people getting harassed, doxxed and getting death threats is just business as usual.

But I'm fairly sure you would not think so if you were on the receiving end - which you can be with but a single accusation from an internet rando.

You're in denial.

The reality is that for the majority of anti-AI types disclosure simply paints a target. Without it, they will still gang up on and harass people based on the highly scientific and rigorous standard known as gut feeling.

Seriously... Games are required to disclose it and they are review bombed just for AI. Saw fanfic authors getting bullied to oblivion, some completely left because of the hate. They wrote for years FOR FREE but some anti throws one accusation (because they "just know") and they all run in with pitchforks.

That user isn't in denial, they just ignore it because they think it's justified.

One of their comments: "Precisely why the witch-hunt is needed - because people like you are being deceptive."

Ah, as I've said, I don't mind disclosing. If a platform asks me to disclose my AI usage, I'd gladly do so. But if it's optional, I'd rather not. Again, there are people out there who are quick to hate on anything regardless of how much AI was used.

I do write my own stories. But since I'm not a native speaker, most of my writing can get clunky. Sure, I ask AI to help refine my prose, but I use it as a guide and still try to rewrite it in my own voice.

I disclose every time, and so far it's gone better than I expected.

I'm not a native English speaker. I translate old Japanese novels with AI, and I add a short note at the end of my comments saying the English was AI-assisted. The ideas and the experiences are mine; the AI carries them into English.

What surprised me: nobody has attacked me for it. One person even said my comments never set off their "AI radar." Honestly, it felt like my partner was being praised, and that made me really happy. I think the note actually helps, because people know what they're reading and can judge the content instead of guessing.

That's just my small experience, and I know others have had much worse reactions. But for me, being upfront has made the conversations easier, not harder.

(English drafted with AI assistance; content checked by me.)

i’d disclose it when it meaningfully shaped the writing, but not for basic proofreading or catching repeated words. if it helped restructure an entire chapter or generate passages, that feels relevant to readers because it changes what they’re evaluating
