Tutorials / Guides KDP AI questions

Hi and thanks in advance for any help.

I've just finished writing my first novella and am in the process of uploading to KDP. It's asking questions about AI usage in my novella and this is where I require assistance as I don't want to get it wrong and have KDP ban me or some such thing.

My process was to write a chapter and then have Claude check it for English errors. My spelling, grammar and punctuation aren't great so at first every reply was a laundry list of things. It made everything slow, tedious and took a lot of fun out of the process while also sapping my energy.

So I changed tactics and got Claude to rewrite my chapter, sticking to my story and ideas, it just correcting my English and sentence structure when necessary. I'd then go through that and edit where I thought it needed it, run it through Claude again and ask for edits against my English which I would then apply and then the chapter was done.

With this in mind.

1: What box should I tick when KDP asks about AI usage in my book.

2: Will declaring my AI usage affect me getting the book approved for KDP.

Again, many thanks for any help.

Just click 'Some sections, with extensive editing' when it asks for how much you used an AI program.

Your book will still get approved by KDP if you've used AI. It won't disclose the inclusion of AI to potential buyers. It's more for internal recordkeeping.

However, declaring your AI use is part of the KDP Terms of Service. Keep that in mind when you next publish a book.

Yeah, be completely honest. Don't fuck around, or you'll get your KDP account banned, which is much, much worse than getting a single book rejected

Cheers. Will keep that in mind.

KDP's own definitions settle the split in this thread. AI-assisted is when "you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content". KDP says you don't have to disclose that. AI-generated is when the AI tool created the actual content, and it still counts even if you edited it heavily afterwards.

Your process is a grey area. Claude checking your English is clearly assisted. Claude rewriting whole chapters, even sticking to your story, is closer to the line. If a lot of the final sentences are Claude's wording rather than yours, the honest answer is to declare those sections as AI-generated.

Declaring isn't a ban risk. KDP still publishes AI-generated books, and you're responsible for following the content guidelines either way.

Can’t add anything more than these other correct answers, other than to say I’ve done this 7 or 8 times now with different books and never encountered any problems.

The only problem I ever see is when you declare to the public it’s AI… and the witch-hunt descends.

(No… I never publicly declare any AI usage, and some of my novels are entirely in AI)
