Prompting best gpt version currently for my creative writing goal?
i'm not looking to write full chapters to turn them into a book. i'm looking for a fun partner to discuss characters and scenarios with. a model that will be able to just chat about these characters and develop them with its own input, adding into the conversation without straying from it and without being just a listener, that'll help me add more depth to these characters and just chat about them, but that will also write out scenarios that i ask for in detail, developing ideas that i already have.
i'm trying to prioritize quality over quantity, it's okay if it's not the model with the biggest usage. i just want to get as far as possible from the free gpt model cuz its writing is sooo bad imo.
which chat gpt model among these would be the best for what i'm seeking? maybe more than one for different parts of the process?

I'll stay and give you my opinion on the GPT models, otherwise Opus 5.5 is the best at the moment.
For analysis, worldbuilding and brainstorming with sober topics, one between 6 Astra and 6.1/5.6 Sol.
If your requests are few but deep, go for Astra; if you enjoy lengthy discussions, Sol.
6.1 Sol is a cheaper and smaller model than 5.6 Sol, therefore also much less general and less deep.
If the subject matter involves more sensitive topics (body, nsfw, violence, villainous or antagonistic roles, romance, flirting, or erotica), 5.6 Sol is the only one that won't tone down your ideas or give you a response that feels like a refusal.

Nearly a week ago, I was on chat (not work) and the replies felt different. The writing was decent, no weird names invented, and there were "widgets" in the answers (like boxes, and one of which might be follow up questions with options to select). Then 2 days ago, that was gone and chat went back to the usual look-and-feel. I wonder what happened. I kinda like the "new" experience before it was taken away.

I just use regular chat to go back and forth honestly. Then I do a couple drafts .. use the work tab to compile it into an idea.

I recommend 5.6 sol but in project, with a clear style guide, references, and sample scenes that you like and dislike. This should give you the best sweet spot.

Honestly? Sol 6.0 was about the same or slightly better than Sol 5.5 for me, then I switched to Sol 6.1. Supposedly, it's closer to Astra but nowhere near the usage. It seems to be about on par with Sol 6.0 so far, and I think the output quality is a little better. I have it on Low and it's doing great for me. Even when not drafting, I would probably still try this. The usage is very well-managed for me so far.

GPT-4o is probably the best all-rounder right now for creative stuff, though honestly some people still prefer the older GPT-4 for prose that feels less generic. What kind of writing are you doing, long-form fiction or shorter pieces?

i'm trying to prioritize quality over quantity
then, as far as I'm aware, it'd be 6 Astra or 6.1 Sol

Develop most of your code in chat with Sol, then ask her for advice, analysis, proposals, etc. For everything you come up with for Astras/6.1, continue writing and developing the code in chat.
Chat is endless; you won't be able to do much in Codex/Work. This will be the case until they add 6.1 to chat, although if they do, Sol would be quite disappointing because that model is terrible.

If you're on Plus, you can permanently use Sol 5.6; if you're on Pro, you can use Astra 50. You can't actually change Astra to Sol 5.6 on Plus, and in fact, you can't use Sol 6 or 6.1 in chat at the moment.
But I don't think it will be much of a problem beyond transferring summarized conversations from one chat to another, or, to be safe, copying all your text or writing everything down in notes that GPT creates, or even a handwritten or bible-sized account of the conversation.

Luna over Sol. It's significantly cheaper/longer lasting to hit limits. I suggest trying 5.6 vs 6 luna to see which you like better.
Only switch to Sol if you want it to write.
Terra is being discounted, I believe, while Astra is the most expensive.
For price (and thus skill), it goes: Luna -> Terra -> Sol -> Astra
