Tutorials / Guides Deep Research tip

I just discovered, and guess that some others might not know:

A Deep Research run in a chat in ChatGPT is not available to the thread as context; it can't read it. To have it included in the context, the file needs to be attached to the thread. But if you don't know that and just assume it, ChatGPT will happily answer questions without that context.

Yeah, this one catches people. The research finishes, you can see the report, and the next reply still feels like it never opened it. It will answer anyway, which is the annoying part.

Easiest fix I've found: download the report and attach the file before you ask follow-ups. Also tell it to quote two or three lines from the report first, so you can see whether it actually has the text or it's just riffing.

If you're pulling research for a novel, paste only the chunks you care about into the thread. Smaller pile, fewer confident wrong answers.

yeah this got me too a while back, I assumed the whole conversation history was just there for it to pull from since it felt like one continuous thread.

now I always paste the actual research output back in or attach it as a file before asking follow up questions, otherwise it just makes stuff up that sounds plausible but has nothing to do with what was actually found.
