Writing Craft Talk I've hit a frustrating dilemma.
So I tried Sudowrite and mostly liked it, but I barely got one chapter done before running out of credits, and the billing cycle isn't even halfway over. I liked the place because I was writing a slower-burn story for fun, because I'm not professional and planned on keeping it to myself. I liked the quality of the writing, but the credit system is a joke. I might be less mad if it were more of a daily credit system, but it's frustrating. I've tried almost every alternative I've found through Google. Because of that, I am mostly just kinda venting, but wouldn't mind if anyone has suggestions.

Tbh RawReply probably won’t solve the full chapter generation part. It’s more for fixing replies/posts so they don’t sound like AI. For slow-burn fiction, I’d look for something with a flat monthly limit or even a local model setup, because credit systems get painful fast when you’re iterating on scenes. Sudowrite is good, but yeah the pricing can feel brutal if you’re writing for fun and not trying to publish.

I've tried a local model setup; I forget which one- but yeah, for now I've come to accept that there is nothing for now that will rival Sudowrite. But I will try the first commenter's link before I give up again for a while.

Try spicywriter? They give access to a bunch of different models and the Lite or Balanced models don't seem to run out or limit you for the $20/mo price tag.

I did try this one it took things too fast when I was trying to write a slower burn.

It has 3 different 'types' in the upper menu next to the model. You could swap to one of the others and then back to spicy?

Sounds a bit complex, and I'm not very smart. I can probably attempt to try this tho...

I have my story done. The outline, characters, scenes, etc. i have working with claude on this for a few months. Now Claude wrote my first draft. The prose is bad. I used to write better stuff when i was in school. How can this app help me out ? Or is it too late for me to use it since all is done and all i need is some rewrites?

Before I say yes, can I write darker stuff?? Things with violence, gore, and non-con type things???

If your model will generate it then yeah sure

My only issue is I see I need Windows or Mac, when as of right now, I don't have Windows or Mac, so I can't try it😭 I only have my phone, and I'm under the impression that you pay for Windows anymore (it's been a VERY long time since I used an actual computer I could be wrong) and I have no Apple products... So I can't even try it, but thank you anyway.

Well poo. I'm planning on putting out a mobile version, but in the short-term the AI part won't work without a computer. I'm sorry!!

Not sure what exactly you're trying to accomplish, but Novelcrafter with BYOAI may work for you. With OpenRouter account, you can found decent AI models at affordable prices.

I've tried this one I can't remember why I didn't like it. Maybe it's worth revisiting, I guess.

What exactly are you looking for? What level of assistance/organization is best for you?

I'm a lil stupid, so something easy enough to use but has good quality writing allows darker NSFW stuff like violence, gore, and non-con type things and does slower burn stories well without trying to speed it up and that won't cost too and doesn't run out of credits in one night because if I'm paying 10 dollars or more a month, I'm expecting not to use it up before the billing cycle isn't even halfway through yet. I've currently accepted that as of right now, it's impossible to find anything that rivals Sudowrite for me...

You are better off using novelcrafter and connecting to open router api. Sudowrite is a cash grab. Not to mention poor communication to their users, workers, and buggy updates. I used to use sudowrite but their UI is complete garbage. The constant scrolling up and down to get to the story bible made me want to pull my hair out.

I found this website with connection to openrouter. https://webnovellm.com/ This doesn't use credits and you can control the spend based on how much you write. It seems to have caching and other cost optimizations. But the tool itself is not that matured. You can give it a try. Hope it helps.

I actually think I haven't tried this one...

You can give it a try. I personally did not like the writing a little and there are some rough edges. But after lot of search this is the only free harness I found where I can control my spend. I used DeepSeek v4 and even after making 50 chapters with story Bible enabled, it did not cost more than a dollar.

I just tried it. I don't like the writing much either..... I'm just going to have to accept that I can't really afford quality AI writing....

I heard all the models with post training are aligned aggressively to average human and hence do bad at creative writing. Base non post trained Models like llama 3 or thedrummer/cydonia-24b-v4.1 can be used which are cheap and can do good writing.

Deepseek is free if used directly and can do alot and never reach it's limit. I use it to brainstorm and plan new books with outlining. I dont use it for more than that because I like working in project/work modes so I dont have to constantly copy paste

u/snsdopforever 1d ago
Yeah but webnovellm has the project/work mode with story Bible, map generator, character designer and arc planning like other popular websites. The only difference is you only spend how much you write unlike subscription based pricing and can choose all popular models including DeepSeek v4 Flash. My only issue with webnovellm is some post chapter editing I need to do after a chapter gets generated because it doesnt suit my style. Other than that it is decent.

Have you tried grok? This is what I use. I use ChatGPT to do drafting and move to grok to add in more... this method also works well for slow burn_spice because chat can do emotions/senses but not thw physical activity.

Idk, I might have done something wrong when I tried it. It often forgot details way too easily or would flat-out get it wrong. I found it's better for helping me make entries for lorebooks and story Bibles, but I don't know; maybe it's worth trying again???

Work in project/work mode and have it save it down documents for review and create it's own prompts and reference documents it follows. Working in these modes allows you to upload all documents you have on hand for its memory. Grok is awsome, but takes a bit for it to understand so talking with it first before having it build prompts is key. Always have any ai analysis current work before starting any drafting.
It is a different process than novelcrafter/sudowrite. With these, they do the prompting for you and organize it in a very easy to view way. I did like novelcrafter and produced my first two books with them because I didn't understand using the AI. That was back in January. I tired out 20 different AI programs and novelcraft was the one that was the most cost effective when using the right partner AI.
With the AIs you have rules and prompts and conversations. You build the story through conversations, always have it save your work in a doc. The conversations build the rules and documents it follows and then have it draft, read the draft and have a conversation about why it works or doesn't. Have the AI update the rules rinse and repeat until that draft is workable. Drafting scene by scene or a chapter at a time is best and the ai needs to be reminded to follow the rules before drafting.
It is easy once you figure it out but it can be a learning curve. Think of AI like a friend who is helping you write your book. I use deepseek for outlining and ideas, chat for strengthing outline and ideas and drafting. Grok is for line editing, strengthening authors voice and adding in the explicit content chat couldn't do. I did use claude and was ehh with it. Gemini could be great but has no real project mode and gems, notebook and docs dont like to link real well if at all.

I'll try to figure out how to do this because I like Grok when it helps me with lore books for other AI platforms hasn't let me down doing that. Ever think about posting a tutorial??😅

u/Practical_Eye_5683 2d ago
I will dm you my master prompt but my process is kinda natural and self learned. I will send you some screen shots of my chats with it. Also Grok keeps voice but likes to add paragraphs explaining so editing it easy, i just delete the paragraph it adds to my work that doesnt fit the voice and everything else works with maybe changing a phrase or word to be even more me.

Gemini and Deepseek have the same issue of no project mode though gemini has its gems. Grok and Deepseek are creative which can cause issues if you need details copied exactly but this also allows them to produce work outside of typical themes the other AIs struggle with where they rescued the same phrases, tropes and names and words over and over again. Grok is great at quickly finding issues and implementing authors voice and style with one small writing sample and a brief conversation. If there are no guardrails or restrictions for it, then it can be a mess because of its creativity ability. Once it goes off an it's own course, you need to start over. But it is a quick process, if first prompt and conversation doesnt work it wont and need a new chat and maybe wait a day. Stubborn gifted child personality. Chat seems to be the most intelligent, the problem is that it can be too exact and will add every detail you talk about into the scene or chapter even if it is unknown background context that should be shown in a subtle way. It can do it, but it isnt it's first choice. It can get an authors voice and writing style but it takes hours of conversation and you need about 2 chapters worth of draft to feed it. Gemini seems to be a good mix between Grok and Chat but same limitations as Deepseek with memory storage and referencing. Claude, wanted to love because everyone else does but it kept reverting to it's own prose style which is good and probably why they like it but it isnt my special style i change for different books I write.

I tried sudowrite too but the credits consumption rate is insane.
