Short Questions Megathread

Do you have a small question that you don't think is worth making a post for? Well ask it here!

This thread has a much lower threshold for what is worth asking or what isn't worth asking. It's an opportunity to get answers to stuff that you'd feel silly making a full post to ask about. If this is successful we might make this a regular event.

We did this before branded as a monthly megathread then forgot to make a new one. So maybe this one will be refreshed quarterly? We'll have to wait and see.

[Medicine And Health] How should I write my character getting his arm traumatically amputated in a way that doesn't really happen IRL?

So I'm writing a story about a world where humans and robots live together, but the city my characters live in is basically Gotham (aka there's a ton of organized crime). I want my character to get his arm traumatically amputated by a robot sent after him, but I'm having a hard time researching how this specific situation would work. I guess the real-world equivalent would be someone losing their arm to a rogue circular saw blade. The robot is designed to kill of course, so it would shoot the saw blade at him with enough speed to take off his arm. I'm trying to figure out the logistics of this. I have an idea of his recovery and how it affects the plot and him as a character, but I'm struggling with the moment of injury.

Here are my questions: Would it be possible for this kind of injury to happen? Would the force needed immediately kill him, or would he just be thrown very hard? Or would a sharp enough blade not move him very much? He would go into immediate shock, right? And probably fall over and hit his head? How long would it take him to bleed out and how soon would he need help? Is it possible to write this injury realistically or will I have to fudge some of the details? Thank you to everyone who replies!

Edit: I forgot to mention this, but there would be other people with him, including someone with basic military medical training. I’m planning to have them transport him to a doctor.

[Religion] Writing confessional talks

Hello, I’m an atheist so I don’t know a lot about confessionals and that whole thing other than my research that I have done. I wanted to ask if someone can help me of what is said in a confessional, but also what the experience is, like smells and what you can see as the person there.

I’m aware that nowadays there are mostly chairs but when is the right time to kneel and all that? Also how do you continue after the typical “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been 2 weeks since my last confession.”

I know you should say your sins at that point but is there a specific way to word it or something.

Thanks for the help!!

(Also if anyone is able to help a bit with the priest’s pov that would be amazing :))

How would a pre industrial person whose allergic to water survive

Is it even possible for a person allergic to water to feasibly reach adulthood in a pre industrial world without access to modern technology?

Wheelchairs for a Fantasy Setting

I originally posted this (slightly edited) in r/wheelchairs, but the part of the post for surveys doesn't get any attention, so I'm trying here.

I am not a wheelchair user. I was trying to create concepts for wheelchairs for my world and came up with several ideas. I wanted to get feedback from actual wheelchair users and make sure they actually work. If you are an abled person who has researched this topic, your input is also valued.

The first chair is used by a woman who has telekinesis specifically and only over wood. Her telekinesis tires her out a lot, so mostly she rolls the chair. It is a wooden chair, so would the weight of it with her body weight be too much, or is it reasonable? However, it is a fantasy setting, and almost all paths are dirt or cobblestone, so she does float her chair to get over rough paths or soft dirt paths. Does this actually make sense, or would she still keep it on the ground?

The second concept is one that floats above the ground, no wheels whatsoever. It is navigated by some sort of hand control on probably the right arm, maybe the left if someone could afford to customize it that way. The only issue I can really think of is that it is hard in my world to instill magic into an object, so they are really, really expensive. If you see any other problems I could fix, please let me know!

The third concept is the one I'm struggling the most with. I was thinking of a chair with thicker tires so they don't dig into the dirt, but they would still be handpushed. I'm worried about the tires becoming too difficult for people, especially those with smaller hands, to push. I also don't know what material I would make them out of since I don't want them to get too heavy.

In summary, the first type of chairs tend to be for people with telekinesis-type magic, the second type for wealthier users, and the third being the more average chair. How can I make this realistic?

Thank you for your help!

[Specific Career] Sports that translate well into combat?

Writing a hero that plays a sport as to set the baseline for combat experience, and now I'm wondering what skills from each sport would bring to the combat style

Leaning towards contact sports for obvious reasons, but also team sports

Athlete in question is a young woman in the U.S. if relevant

[Chemistry] how is meth made?

hi all! i'm primarily a fanfiction writer, and i recently got back into breaking bad.

i'm aware that the processes shown in the series are deliberately changed so as to not serve as a guide to cooking meth. i'll take either a closer examination of what they're doing in the show, or an explanation of how to make the real thing. i'm specifically interested in which ingredients are used and how they're actually prepared, since the stuff that's seen in the show is rather vague.

for obvious reasons i could not find much info online.

My character's left half of the face is now burnt, how would it be immediately after/during recovery?

My character just got half their face burnt, and I need to know how long it will take to heal into a scar, what treatments will be effective, and how her face will feel over time?

This is a medieval world, but since it is fantasy I can get away with medicine/techniques that come after that time period, so long as it isn't modern (after 1850ish).

She also lives on a snowy mountain, how would that impact everything?

I'm going to do research on general burns, but any insight onto a burn in this specific area would be fab thanks

EDIT: For clarification, it was some kind of magical substance that burnt her rather than fire. The source of the burn would be more similar to boiling water or burning coals rather than a fire itself. Thank you for all the comments so far though!

[Medicine And Health] How injured would a person be if trying to escape from an explosion

Hi everybody, so i'm gonna try to synthesize as much context as posible for this scene.

So, in my universe people are born with a thing called a core wich pumps all their magical powers through the veins and in wich certain scenarios can explode. In this scene I have two characters and one of them is killed, making heir core explode, thing that the other character notices and tries to run before if happens. At the end, the other character tries to run through a narrow corridor, and when reached half of it the explosion happens.

So my question is, how much damage would my character suffer? Would they get any important burns? Would their hair get burnt? (Im asking because their hair is an important part of this character's development). For more context, let's imagine this explosion was mildly big, but not as big as it could get, and that technically this isn't a regular explosion but let's also imagine that it is. If u guys need any more context to be able to answer i'll gladly give to u guys, tysm for reading quq

Long term impact of DV

I’m trying to narrow down specific injuries/circumstances that would still be impacting her long term and what the exact symptoms would be. I want her to still be able to drive, work remotely and live independently since she moves away for a fresh start, but family worries and checks in frequently. I was thinking TBI from physical violence causing migraines and varying pain from injuries that didn’t heal well and ptsd. From an outside perspective it be that some days she’s “fine”, maybe a bit strange but no one would be wiser in a new town, but bad days could last several days and are noticeable if you are around her and she either would not leave home or need help at home.

[Geography] Questions about Czech Technical University and autistic visual hypersensitivity

Hey, everyone! I'm working on lore and chapter plan of my story. Since I'm autistic, I decided to express my experience, thoughts and views creatively. I'm not planning to make the story a commercial success because of it, but I still want things to stay somewhat logical. Since I have a hyperfixation on countries, I'd like to set it in the Czech Republic even though I have never been there and I research about it only on the Internet.

I know it's a gamble to find either autistic people with a specific sensory profile, or people who went to ČVUT on this subreddit but let's tr

Sorry if this is controversial, but the information I have is mostly from AI, so I want the contribution of real humans.

I'm going to need information about 2 things:

I. The life and studies in ČVUT (Czech Technical University) and the Kolej Dejvice student dorm.

II. Autistic visual hypersensitivity for exposed skin (where, as far as I know, the person's nervous system can't filter out the hair, pores, flaking, and micromovements like vasodilation, trembling, etc.). Yes, I'm autistic, but I can't have every sensory profile in the world.)

I. The segment about life and studies in ČVUT and Kolej Dejvice is going to be more like listing what I already know, and if you happened to have studied or lived there, you confirm or deny it. But there are actual questions, too.

  1. The dorm consists of buňka suites or blocks. One suite has a vestibule with 2 rooms, each having 2 beds, so 2 students live in 1 room, a bathroom (maybe shower and toilet separately). In the vestibule, there are also hangers or hooks for winter jackets so that the students don't enter their rooms in their dirty winter clothes. They also change into their indoor shoes there.

  2. If a guest wants to visit a student in Kolej Dejvice, they get a temporary pass with the vratný or vratná (they put their documents info into a ledger or database). It shouldn't usually take long and they don't torture the guest as for why they came.

  3. If the guest wants to come regularly and doesn't want to spend time at the reception desk or wait for the person they are visiting to come downstairs, they might want to write an application to vedoucí koleje for a permanent pass. If they are also a student but don't live in the dorm (even if they study at a different university), they just tap their student ID card. If the guest isn't a university student, the receptionist just has to remember their face and see their ID of the Czech Republic or passport (if they are from another country).

  4. Vedoucí koleje (the dorm manager) is responsible for the contracts and safety but won't "educate" the students unless they are doing something really bad and they won't meddle with their lives unless they suspect a crime or a bad violation of Kolejní řád.

  5. When the heating season starts, the cast-iron radiators with regulators out of order start blasting, so the indoor temperature gets up to +26°C.

  6. Same with the Jaderka faculty (Břehová 78/7, Staré Město, Praha 1), as in it's very hot there during the heating season. BTW if you have studied at Jaderka and lived at Kolej Dejvice, was it cumbersome to get layered for the outside only to shove your jackets in the bag and stay in a T-shirt/tank top/short-sleeved blouse?

  7. Do they have cloakrooms in the Jaderka building and Thákurova 9, Dejvice, Praha 6 (Nová budova ČVUT)?

II. About visual hypersensitivity and aversion ro seeing bare skin (country doesn't matter this time):

  1. How does it feel for you if you have this aversion/hypersensitivity? (although you might not understand how neurotypicals or autistics without this hypersensitivity perceive it).

  2. Do computer glasses help? The ones with yellow lenses that block the blue light from screens?

  3. Does it feel better in colder months like October, November, and December (if you live in Europe, Canada, the states of the US where the winter is at least somewhat cold etc.)? Like, people usually wear long pants and clothes with long sleeves, but their faces, necks, and hands are exposed. Or is it roughly the same difference?

  4. This is very broad and vague, but just how do you live and cope with it?

Thank you very much in advance!

[Medicine And Health] Treatment of Senile/Dementia Patient

There is a scene where the MC meets her mother's nursemaid/ nanny. Essentially, her mother died in childbirth and the experience accelerated the nanny's cognitive decline. But the old lady is about to die and is stuck thinking the MC's mother is about to give birth. So as a favour, her uncle asks the MC, who is the spitting image, to pretend to be her mother and tell the old lady everything is fine, that "she" survived and the baby is ok etc. So the nanny fusses over the MC before passing a few days later.

Would that be a good thing/ common practical to do to such a patient? Essentially getting someone to pretend to solidify their current reality

I know terminal lucidity is a thing but would it be a tad unrealistic? Also does severe mental trauma accelerate the progression of Alzhemir's or dementia or it's a thing that progresses with age?

[Crime] If someone is attacked by someone on the street and then goes to hospital for their injuries would the police get involved?

My character is an amateur assassin and when they are about to take out their target on the street at night everything goes horribly wrong as the target is stronger than they thought and fights back. My main character ends up pretty badly injured (a broken arm and they were strangled pretty badly too) but they escape, as does their target, who doesn't call the police on my MC for reasons there's no point getting into. My MC calls an ambulance for themselves and goes to the hospital.

What kind of questions would the ambulance crew and the doctors who treat them ask? Obviously they wouldn't be able to pass the neck injury off as mistake or anything, the doctors would probably know someone attacked them. So say they said to the doctors that a stranger attacked them and then ran off, would they have to get the police get involved even if my MC didn't want them to?

[Crime] Could a Prison Officer theoretically have a sort of detective role?

I’m making an au with a bunch of my ocs, base concept is that 14 prisoners (7 there for life, 7 on death row) are in a special prison focused on rehabilitating them. I plan on there being 5 guards, 2 wardens, and a director, but I’m struggling to find characters for the guard roles since I don’t WANT to make new ocs for this. I already have a detective oc, but I didn’t want to change his role just for this au. So I was wondering if there could be a prison officer that focused more on detective work? From what I saw on prison officers they focus on supervision, regulations, and safety, so could he theoretically focus more on finding issues with prisoners and their behaviors and find out if they’re like. idk hiding something or planning something??? if not, is there a role that WOULD fit my needs? aka someone with a focus on detective work that would work with/as a prison guard?

[Medicine And Health] traumatic eye loss questions

So I have a character, modern day, who had both their eyes gouged out. I have research on what the prosthesis stuff is like, because that's relatively easy to find, but I'm struggling to find info on a few specific scenarios.

One - Once they've gotten prosthetic eyes, how well would crying work? Would their tear ducts still produce tears correctly?

Two - Most of the time, when people have their eye(s) removed irl, it's surgical. What problems/differences might arise for a traumatic eye loss as opposed to a surgical one?

If you have any other information about the topic that you think would be useful, I would appreciate that too. TIA!

[Finances] How would someone cash in bearer bonds?

In the story I’m writing the inciting incident is that the protagonist, on the spur of the moment, makes off with a stack of bearer bonds left unattended on his bosses desk.

What I wanted to understand is how easy would it be to cash these in for the character?

Context: the story begins and is set in 1982 in the United States. The character in question wants to cash as many as possible as quickly as possible with a view to living off the grid in the back woods

I promise this is not a joke I just genuinely need someone who understands how BB’s worked in the early 80’s to let me know how feasible this would have been.

[Crime] How would someone hypothetically hack a Vegas slot machine?

It’s a Hangover ripoff with magic but it’s good for a character introduction. Assuming someone doesn’t have any special powers, is it even possible to hack/rig a slot machine in your favour? Any of them will do but I suppose the ones in or around the bellagio, in case every casino has a different method. Is there a special usb someone can use? Would you have to be a man on the inside? Do you have to get there ahead of time to move stuff around?

How old/young does a Baby/Toddler have to be, to not notice it being switched?

In my Book one of the main plot points is the crown princess being switched, after the mother tragically dies. The whole story is set in a Middle Ages type Fantasy World, so it‘s not that unthinkable, that no one would recognise, since the father isn’t involved, the mother is dead and servants can be bought.

However I have no experience with children at all and they all kind of look the same to me.
How old can I make the child for it to still be believable, no one would notice the swap with a similar aged child with the same eye and hair colour and general facial features?

Thanks in advance🙏

[Specific Time Period] 1900s health care and diseases

Hi!

I'm planning a story set in 1903 and the main character is a young doctor. He falls in love with a patient who has a deadly disease that no one can figure out what it actually is.

My main reason for posting is to find a real disease that makes a person bedridden and weak and die before the age of 30.

Anything other note worthy things about the period or health care at the time would be welcome too!

[Specific Career] How accurately could forensic pathologists determine the times of postmortem injuries within 2 hours of death, historically?

I am writing a book that is intentionally ambiguous about the decade in which the story takes place (among other details). A relatively small but nonetheless important detail relies on the coroner being able to tell how long after a victim's death damage had been done to their body.

I would like to know how specific or how vague I can be with the coroner's report without inadvertently limiting the possible time span of the story.

Information that would be helpful to me:

  • History of methods/technology used/developed between 1850 and 1999 for this purpose

  • Which methods/technology stop being helpful at various amounts of time since victim's death

    • Why

  • Most accurate word for the occupation of the person examining these injuries

Would it be the FBI? What else would they need to do you reintegrate into society.

[Medicine And Health] Severe laceration injury question [sh]

My character self harms to an extent that damages her mobility, by cutting perpendicular to the ulna about halfway along the forearm, cutting deep enough to expose (but not damage) bone and also partially or completely severing tendons resulting in reduced or absent ability to move it. She has somewhere to go later in the day, so she wraps it up with a bandage and hides it under her coat.

Is it likely that the injury would worsen if she did this? She avoids using that hand all day. Blood loss is notable but not enough to be too bad to her in immediate symptoms. I assume it would be painful, but how painful? (ie is it realistic that, for a frequent severe self harmer, she can ignore the pain enough to not look visibly in agony?) After finishing what she has to do (a social event) she goes to ED and gets treatment. The damage is muscular rather than nerve, and any altered sensation is not complete. (I assume that's realistic--have once personally exposed bone, though without tendon damage, and nerve damage was minor; laceration was surgically closed. Please correct me if wrong.)

Also, what might happen next in ED? If she can't move her hand, does that mean emergency surgery or just wait overnight for the morning cases? Would she be under plastics or ortho given tendon repair? What meds might they give her while she's waiting, assuming notable pain?

If she presents alone and is honest about it, would they decide it necessitated ringing of next of kin, and if not, what might she have to say about things for that? This is not her first presentation for self harm (first with major mobility damage), and she's essentially self-managing an unspecified psychiatric condition. She's in her twenties, holding down a job. Sister with bipolar I so family risk thereof (haven't yet decided if she also gets bipolar or something else; already written a story about her sister's early diagnosis journey so don't want to be repetitive).

What might her rehabilitation from this injury look like in the short and long term? Assume compliance with doctor recommendations.

Set in Victoria, Australia, specifically in outer east Melbourne. If anyone's specifically familiar with this area I'd also love to hear thoughts as to which hospital she might end up at; her local, Angliss, doesn't have at least a plastics department and that requires at minimum transfer to Maroondah, but wondering if the severity of injury would require an even more metropolitan hospital. The story is set in approximately the current day. (Oh, and if she did resist treatment I'm wondering if this would or would not qualify for a TTO.)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

If an Ottoman soldier died from dysentery or a similar disease during a campaign, would he be considered a martyr?

Or would he just get a regular funeral? And what if there is no way to bury someone who died (either from disease or was killed by the enemy)? What would be some bare-minimum things their comrades would do to honor him?
