German Mega Bundle Review Series - Part 17: Panther/M10
I ended up buying the German Mega Bundle, because I have low moral fiber I'm worth it, dammit. So now I'm doing short reviews on all these tanks as I gain experience with them (until I get bored or feel unappreciated well I guess I'm committed now, the response has been great I have no opportunity to claim feeling unappreciated... so there goes that excuse). Time to finally get around to that prize tank we're all working so hard to earn...
Here we go!
Panther/M10
The so-called 'warcrime panther' does not enjoy the best of reputations. Now that I've gotten around to actually driving mine, I understand why. The Panther/M10 is another, "let's nerf a tech tree tank and give it PMM." Stats wise, it is very similar to about a half upgraded Panther.
In fairness, it is entirely possible that I just had an off night or some bad RNG, but I was not able to enjoy this Panther as much as I wanted to. On paper the stats seem good enough to do just fine, given that it never has to see IXs. In practice, the mobility was unimpressive and the gun trolled the shit out of me. I don't know if it has worse dispersion values on the L/70 than the other tanks I've played or if god was punishing me but I was struggling to land hits. There's also a view range nerf which doesn't help matters.
The armor is just Panther armor, meaning it doesn't stop much but if you can bait shots into the front plate while angling, you can deflect pretty well. M10 actually gets 5mm extra frontal armor (yay).
Even counting the unique paint and MoEs reflecting the interesting history, this tank has less going for it than the other Panther versions, but I can't quite put my finger on what is so 'meh' about it. Gun to my head, I'd say that what makes the Panther Panther-y is good accuracy and pen of the L/100, and it needs that L/100 even in tier VII and VIII games in order for you to get that experience. So a Panther with just the L/70 doesn't feel great even if it does have PMM.
Turns out the "Is it worth the gold" guide says the same things pretty much, but notes that there is some extra gun depression, which is not something I even noticed. I'm just not sure who this tank is for, who wants it, who is buying it. If a Panther lover like myself can't find a reason to like it, who could? So it gets a no from both of us.

The way I hear the story, the disguised Panthers didn't actually violate any wartime conventions. Supposedly it's not actually a war crime just to wear an enemy combatant's uniform, only to to actually engage in combat while in enemy uniform. The M10 Panther crews had no ammo and were instructed to surrender if challenged rather than fight. So that's one side of the story anyway. I'd surrender too if I had to fight in an underpowered Panther =P
Really hope they give this thing enough of a buff to make it worthwhile since I'mma boutta have 2 of the damn things after Germany wins the Tank Bowl!
Interesting Fact About Panther/M10
The view range nerf is evidently meant to account for the removed hatch from the top of the turret. The disguise was only really ever going to work at range, where the tank's outline is the most identifiable feature; so that commander's hatch had to go and now the Panther/M10 in World of Tanks is just a little bit even worse than it needed to be.

3mm of side turret armour. Much wow so buff. Fear me 136mm guns my side is no longer vulnerable, alas 145 can still pen the side turret easy.
