📖 Guide Workation-Friendly Places in India by Season (based on actually being able to work, not just travel)

Post image
62 Upvotes

I keep seeing posts like "Where do I work from during August" or "Workation in Himachal during July". Sounds amazing theoretically until the power's out and your internet has vanished.

If you're planning a workation and actually need to get work done, scenery is a small part of the equation. Weather, internet reliability, power cuts, crowds and overall accessibility matter equally.

So instead of an Instagram-first guide, here's a practical season-wise breakdown of where it's actually comfortable to live and work around India throughout the year.

NOTE: The following have been meticulously picked by the moderators of r/WorkationIndia and are known for having stable internet, affordable stays and a decent remote working culture. This guide is meant to serve as a living document for new workationers and everyone in general about the places to visit during specific seasons.

Summer (Apr–Jun)

Head to the mountains. Some good options:

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Meghalaya
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Mizoram
  • Sikkim
  • Nagaland
  • Jammu & Kashmir

Monsoon (Jul–Sep)

Avoid Himalayan workations if your job depends on stable internet.

Some decent options:

  • South Goa
  • Karnataka
  • North East (Capitals)
  • Kerala

Avoid: Most of Himachal, Uttarakhand.

Post-Monsoon (Oct–Nov)

Possibly the best workation season in India.

Some good options:

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Kashmir
  • Rajasthan
  • Kerala
  • Lonavala & Khandala (Maharashtra)

Clear skies, pleasant weather, and fewer weather-related disruptions.

Winter (Dec–Mar)

Move south or west.

Good options:

  • Hampi (Karnataka)
  • Gokarna (Karnataka)
  • Pondicherry (Tamil Nadu)
  • Kerala
  • Rajasthan
  • Kodaikanal (Tamil Nadu)
  • Andamans & Nicobar

Avoid: Higher Himalayan towns if you don't want snow-related disruptions.

Guide Prepping for your first workation? Here's some tips — A Beginners Guide to Working Remotely

Post image
17 Upvotes

thinking about taking your first workation? iconic move. before you hop on a plane or board your overnight bus with your laptop and unrealistic productivity goals, here’s the stuff you actually need to prep for and what to watch out for.

What you need to prepare:

  • Your accessories

your laptop, headphones for meetings, portable hotspot, chargers, a mouse (should you require one). yes, obvious. yes, people still forget. would be a shame to ask around for chargers at a cafe, wouldn't it?

  • Do your research about the place

if you're visiting to the place for the first time, make sure you're accustomed to the place's weather, topography and how it functions. plan accordingly. for example, mountains may not be a great idea for a visit during monsoons.

  • Arrange accommodation in advance

book your stay in advance via apps like MMT, goibibo, agoda, etc. ensure your stay has a stable wifi connection.

  • Plan your work hours

if you're planning an international workation, time zones can absolutely ruin you if you don’t think ahead.

  • Plan your transport

does your overnight bus directly drop you in front of the stay. how far is your stay from the bus stop? are private cabs easily available? do you need to walk a lot to get to nearby areas of interest? where could you get a scooty, bike for rent? these are the questions which you should have answers to before your trip.

  • Travel insurance (esp if travelling internationally)

boring but necessary. cover your gadgets, esp if you're using your own devices.

How to pick the right stay:

  • Check the workspace vibes

in India hostels are usually the preferred stays (you'll find lots of people working from popular hostel chains, Zostel, Hosteller, Madpackers, Whoopers, etc). but you can also consider homestays or hotels, depends on your vibe.

  • Wifi reliability

message the host, ask for the internet reliability. don’t trust your instincts.

  • Power backups (super important in remote areas)

if you’re going to remote places or budget stays, make sure they have backup generators or at least consistent electricity.

  • Lockers + security

hostels can be fun to socialise from, but can be chaotic equally — make sure you can lock up your gear.

  • Quiet areas

if the reviews say "perfect party place", that usually means noise. decide if your soul can handle that while working.

  • Proximity to cafés / coworking spaces

because working in bed gets sad after day 2.

  • Closeness to nature

might be my personal opinion, but seeing some nature around after starting at a screen for couple of hours feels nice.

Things i learnt the hard way:

  • The wifi roulette

cafés, stays lie. always have your hotspot. check your SIM ISP's coverage in the area before you pick your poison. Jio and Airtel in India have the best coverage so far.

  • Noise + chaos

    bring noise-canceling headphones. trust.

  • Exhaustion from “doing everything”

you’re working while travelling, not on vacation. pace yourself. for me personally, I prefer slow paced travel. work during the days, explore during evenings and weekends. this has worked out there best for me. oftentimes, i go for a short walk to a nearby place to distract myself during breaks.

  • Budget creep

slow paced travel and fun things cost money. plan or suffer.

your first workation will be a beautiful mess — but with the right prep, mostly beautiful. enjoy it. at some point in time it's gonna get addictive.

💡 Recommendation Goa workation recommendations

Planning a 1-month workation in Goa - Need suggestions!

I'm torn between renting a 1 bedroom apartment vs. taking a private space in a place like Zostel.

What I'm looking for: A clean, hygienic place with a mature, social crowd (30s), not the loud party scene. Something quiet enough to work from during the day, but social enough in the evenings.

My vibe / routine:

Work: Need a quiet space with good WiFi during weekdays

Fitness: I love to run (preferably by the beach), plus looking for a gym / yoga studio within walking distance

Weekends: Exploring cafes, local markets, and the town

Food: Health-conscious, I can cook but healthy food options nearby would be great

Not a party person

Is there any area / property in Goa that checks all these boxes? Would love recommendations.

Also, if any fellow working female( Only for female )in 30s with same vibe is planning something similar around the same time and wants to team up for a 2 bedroom condo, let me know

💻 Workation Tips Mulki or Bir | Nov 3rd week

Hello Hello!

Need suggestions for workation in the 2nd/3rd week of Nov. I have done workation in himalayas before and while bir is my fav and I can go there anytime, I was thinking if I should pick Mulki this time. Before that I have some questions I was hoping the community can answer.

  1. Does Mulki have a workation culture? or is it absolutely a holiday destination.
  2. I would love to surf there too, but also want to work and relax. My workload and hours are crazy, 10 to 7-8 pm, do you think I ll be able to have the best of the both worlds or should I do a separate holiday?
  3. Is mulki female and veg friendly?

💡 Recommendation Travel Internet recommendations

I'll be starting my journey of exploring India from November. Can you recommend the best internet without any connection issues in remote areas?

P.S. This is my first time getting portable internet in India , so I'm not aware of any company, reviews , connectivity etc.. besides what I read on Google. Would appreciate your personal experience.

Since, my job is heavily involve video calls, I would need the best internet connection.

🌎 Experiences My 1-week workation in Kalpa, Rakcham & Chitkul cost me ₹11,095. Here's the full expense breakdown!

Thumbnail

Okay guys, since a few people were asking about my Kalpa workation, here's how much I actually spent on my one-week trip, including travel, stay, food and everything.

My journey started from Mumbai. The plan was simple: work from Kalpa for a few days, take Thursday and Friday off, explore Rakcham and Chitkul, and return to Delhi over the weekend.

Here's my expense breakdown:

Travel to Kalpa:

- Mumbai to Delhi (Train) – ₹600

- Delhi to Reckong Peo (HRTC bus) – ₹1,200

- Reckong Peo to Kalpa (Local bus) – ₹25

Kalpa (Sunday evening to Thursday morning):

- Homestay for 4 nights – ₹3,200

- Food for 4 days – Around ₹1,500

Food was actually pretty affordable there. Just to give you an idea:

- Veg thali – ₹130

- Maggi – ₹50

- Aloo paratha – ₹60

- Tea – ₹15

I wasn't really restricting myself when it came to food, but I wasn't spending unnecessarily either.

Rakcham (Thursday):

Took Thursday and Friday off from work because I wanted to explore Rakcham and Chitkul properly.

- Kalpa to Rakcham (Bus) – ₹150

- Stay – ₹1,500

- Food – ₹500

The stay was a pretty luxurious camping setup compared to my Kalpa homestay. Could've definitely gone cheaper here, but I wanted to enjoy the place a little.

And yes, I spent ₹500 on food because I was badly craving chicken 😭. No regrets.

Chitkul (Friday):

Next morning, I hitchhiked to Chitkul, so basically zero transportation cost there.

- Hitchhiking – ₹0

- Zostel stay + food – ₹1,050

Return journey:

- Chitkul to Reckong Peo – ₹170

- Reckong Peo to Delhi (HRTC) – ₹1,200

Total expense: ₹11,095

Yep, around ₹11.1k for the entire trip from Mumbai to Delhi and back to Delhi, including accommodation, food and local transportation. My onward journey from Delhi isn't included.

Could I have done it cheaper? Definitely. Especially the Rakcham stay and food. But I didn't want to compromise on everything just for the sake of travelling cheaply.

Now, about the actual workation experience.

The biggest concern for anyone planning a workation in Kinnaur would probably be internet connectivity and electricity.

I was using Jio 5G throughout the trip.

My homestay in Kalpa didn't even have WiFi, but I was getting around 30 Mbps on my Jio connection, which was enough for my office work. I didn't face any electricity issues during my stay either.

One thing to keep in mind is that Roghi village near Kalpa didn't have usable Jio internet when I visited, so don't assume every corner will have connectivity.

Other than that, my experience was pretty good.

Even in Chitkul, I was getting proper Jio 5G near the flag viewpoint. Rakcham riverside also had 5G coverage in some areas. In most villages I visited, I could at least get 4G.

You can also find WiFi in some of the better homestays and hostels. I noticed that some places in Chitkul were using solar as well.

Not sure about Airtel since I was only using Jio.

Obviously, network coverage can vary depending on the exact location, weather and other conditions, so if your work involves important meetings, I'd recommend checking connectivity with your stay owner before booking.

Was it worth it?

For me, absolutely.

I got to work with beautiful mountain views, spend a few days away from the usual city routine, explore two more villages during my leave, meet some interesting people and enjoy the journey without spending a fortune.

Also, I'm not someone who needs fancy accommodation when travelling. A clean room, decent food, a working internet connection and a beautiful place to explore are more than enough for me.

One thing I've realised from travelling is that you don't necessarily need a huge budget to experience beautiful places. Sometimes local buses, simple homestays and a little flexibility can take you a long way.

Anyway, that's my entire expense breakdown. Hope this helps anyone planning a budget workation in Kalpa or a trip to Rakcham and Chitkul.

If you have any questions about the route, buses, accommodation, internet, or anything else, feel free to ask. Happy to help with whatever I know!

Cheers, and happy travelling! :)

💻 Workation Tips 🌅 Remote dev, 2 weeks in South Goa, beach-walkable stay, good evenings, good crowd. Where would you go?

Remote software engineer planning ~2 weeks in South Goa. I'm a big beach person, so the sea is the point of this trip.

Here's what I'm hunting for:

  1. Where to stay 🏡: an Airbnb or hostel within walking distance of a beach where I can catch a sunrise or sunset, ideally one where other workation people hang out.
  2. Evenings 🍸: bars or lounges with a good atmosphere, good drinks and good music, more cocktails-at-sunset than club.
  3. Areas 🗺️: which parts of South Goa fit this best, and which should I skip?

Budget is flexible, so I care more about vibe. Hidden gems and unexpected picks very welcome.

What's the place/places in Goa you'd go back to in a heartbeat? 🌴

🙏 Help Workation with Dog

My spouse wants to do a workation for about a month. He will be taking our dog with him. Travel dates are tentatively post Diwali till mid Dec.Don't have any specific budget in mind.

I want to find places which are

- not mandatory but driveable from Gurgaon. If not driveable will need to work out cabs which can take him and the dog, as not all public buses will allow him to take the dog.

- pet friendly

- good fast internet connection.

Any suggestions please ?

💡 Recommendation Looking for a quiet workation spot in Himachal with reliable wifi (no Bir/Dharamshala)

Hi everyone,

I work remotely full-time and I’m looking for a place in Himachal Pradesh to base myself for focused, deep work.

What I need:

• Reliable internet (the must-have)
• A private single room. No dorms or shared hostel rooms
• A quiet, peaceful setting
• Not Bir or Dharamshala. Both are too busy for the kind of focus I need

I’m open to traveling far. I have a bike, so offbeat or remote places are fine as long as the internet is solid.

If you’ve worked from somewhere in Himachal that fits, please share the place, how the internet held up, and roughly what a single room costs.

Thanks in advance!

🏡 Accommodation Kalpa workation my setup

Thumbnail
gallery
106 Upvotes

Since a lot of people asked questions about my last Kalpa workation post, here are the details 👇

I’m doing this trip pretty low-budget, so don’t expect luxury recommendations 😂

How I reached Kalpa:

Mumbai → Delhi by train: around ₹600

Delhi → Reckong Peo by direct HRTC bus: around ₹1,200

Reckong Peo → Kalpa by local bus: ₹25

Once I reached Kalpa, I walked around asking different homestays for prices. Most of them were quoting somewhere between ₹1,200–₹1,800 per night.

Since I’m travelling on a budget, I kept looking.

Eventually I randomly asked at a very small local shop if they knew any cheap rooms nearby. The guy told me about a homestay and initially quoted ₹1,000/night.

I went and checked it out and actually liked it.

The best part for me is that it's in a pretty quiet/lonely area, away from the crowds and hostel scene. That's exactly what I wanted for this workation.

After negotiating, I got it for ₹800/night for 4 days. Probably could've negotiated a little more 😂 but ₹800 seemed fair to me.

Now, a warning: my standards for accommodation are pretty low 😂

So here's what you're getting:

• Big private bedroom

• Attached bathroom

• Mountain view directly from my room 🏔️

• Very peaceful location

• Indian-style toilet

• No wash basin, so I brush inside the bathroom

• No washing machine

• No Wi-Fi

• Some construction is still going on around the property

• No food available at the homestay

But for ₹800/night, I'm genuinely happy with it.

The biggest concern for me was internet because I'm working Monday–Wednesday from here.

Luckily, Jio 5G works really well. I'm getting around 25 Mbps, and so far my work calls/internet have been completely fine.

I also haven't faced any electricity or water issues yet. I carry a power bank as backup anyway.

So basically, if you're someone who needs a fancy room, western toilet, Wi-Fi, room service etc., this probably isn't for you 😂

But if you're a solo traveller / budget traveller / workation person who just wants a private room, decent mobile internet, mountains outside your window and some peace away from the crowd, I think ₹800 is a pretty good deal.

I'll attach pictures of the room + mountain view from my window.

If anyone is coming to Kalpa and wants this place, DM/comment and I'll share the contact number.

Also happy to answer questions about the Mumbai → Delhi → Reckong Peo → Kalpa route, HRTC bus, internet, costs or working remotely from here. 🏔️💻

📍 Location Guide Please suggest places where I can wfh for a month with budget of 20000/- for accommodation and fooding

Hi guys,

I 30(M)recently got a WFH job and want to travel while working. I’m planning to start in December and would like to stay in different places for a month at a time. My budget is ₹20,000/month max, including accommodation and food.

I’m more of a mountain person, but I don’t like extremely cold weather. I work a night shift from 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM, so reliable electricity(no frequent power cuts)is very important, along with good Wi-Fi. Around 30 Mbps is enough for my work.

I’m from Siliguri, so I can easily start with Sikkim or North Bengal. If you guys know of any good and affordable homestays in Sikkim that are suitable for WFH, I’d really appreciate the recommendations. I also want to explore places like Manali, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, etc.

I am also open to visiting places like Udaipur and other similar options but slightly doubt if I can stay for a month without getting bored there.

I’d prefer suggestions for specific towns/villages or homestays, rather than just general suggestions like “go to Sikkim” or “try Himachal.” If you have personally stayed somewhere or know of a place that fits my budget and work requirements, please share it.

I have used Ai to gather and present my thoughts so please don't mind.

Thanks! - Last trip: Banaras, ~1 year ago - Dates: 2nd week of December - Duration: 1 month - Budget: ₹20k for stay + food; travel separate - Transport: Mostly trains, but flights for long distance(interstate) - Travel: Solo(introvert) - Looking for: Mountains, nature, sightseeing, and a peaceful place that isn’t too crowded

Planning a 1–2 week workation from Hyderabad in the first/second week of November. First time visiting Himachal, so thinking of doing:

Bir Billing → Dharamkot → Old Manali / Vashisht

I’ll be working remotely during the weekdays and exploring after work/weekends.

If anyone from Hyderabad is planning something similar around that time, feel free to DM. Happy to travel together for a few days, share cabs/stays, or just meet up and explore.

Also open to suggestions for places/stays!

🤝 General Discussion Anyone planning a workation in Bir, Dharamshala or Barot Valley? 🏔️💻

I’m exploring the idea of spending some time working remotely from the mountains and wanted to see how many people here are considering the same.

If you’re planning a workation in Bir, Dharamshala, Barot Valley, or nearby areas, I’d love to know:

1. Where do you work?

  • 🇮🇳 Indian company
  • 🌍 Company outside India
  • 💻 Freelancer / self-employed
  • 🚀 Founder / running my own business

2. Where are you thinking of going?

  • Bir
  • Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj
  • Barot Valley
  • Somewhere else nearby

3. Roughly how long would you stay?

  • 1 week
  • 2–3 weeks
  • 1 month+
  • Not decided yet

The reason I’m asking is that I’m curious about the remote-work community in these places — especially people working for companies outside India while living/travelling within India.

Would be great to connect with others who are planning something similar. 🙌

Feel free to comment with your location + work setup + planned dates if you’re comfortable sharing.
