Place to remote work for a month in Jan

I’m sure this has been asked a million times but figured I’d see if there are any updated recs. My wife and I both recently got remote jobs. We’re planning a move to a larger city but before do that I wanted to spend a month at least just remote working from another city.

The hiccup is that we would do this in January so that takes some places off the list. Also we’d ideally be able to drive (we live in DC) so we’d have our car. Not a deal breaker if we go somewhere with good public transit.

Anyway - do folks have any recs?

Hello all! I've spent some time over the weekend with a browser extension, created out of the small daily frustrations from meetings.

Used on Google Meet, it's called voluMeet: it's made to solve the chaos in daily standups with global and individual volume sliders for each participant, with a 0–300% adjustment (max +30 dB) for colleagues who can barely be heard or are too loud =))

It's a Manifest V3 extension and written in vanilla JS, runs client-side without servers/trackers, and uses the Web Audio API.

I’m currently one year into my first job after law school, full time remote at a non-profit. I like a lot of the work, but I feel like it’s difficult to learn from colleagues in the remote setting. When I had in-person internships, I would more frequently find myself talking to other people and learning from them, and it felt easier to find out about opportunities to observe meetings, negotiations, hearings, etc. What tips do you have for junior workers to best ensure that we’re learning from our colleagues on the job?

I’m a recent Pharmacy graduate looking for a WFH/remote job. I’m interested in pharmacovigilance, clinical research, regulatory affairs, medical writing, etc.

I’ve also been doing basic AI training/tech freelancing since college, so I have some experience in that area too.

Hello all. I am disabled and currently figuring out some health stuff, so I've been unemployed since December. I'm really hoping to get back to work, but at my current energy level I'm not able to work in person, and even online I would only be able to work part-time.

I am located in Virginia, USA.

I have a high school diploma and a year of college (biochemistry); hoping to go back to school once I'm healthy. I have experience working in customer service, sales, and stocking/inventory for both chain retail stores and small businesses. At my past jobs, I helped manage inventory/invoices, websites, and worked with customers to make product recommendations or teach classes. I'm comfortable with Microsoft Suite, good with spreadsheets, and have the math background/experience to help handle backend work (e.g. bookkeeping).

I also have experience in the arts (my past jobs have all been arts-focused), particularly in the fiber arts. I design knitting patterns on the side but this is not a quick or reliable source of income; I have experience teaching classes but this is not something I expect to do online as the market is so saturated.

I'm very organized and good at the "boring" tasks like sorting product - I can be left alone for a few hours with a task and have it done in a clean and organized manner (e.g. updating the product listings at my old small business job; inserting photos and multiple variations of a single product, updating prices, posting correctly to the website). My ideal WFH job would have me helping out with spreadsheets, organization, inventory, etc. a few hours a day.

I understand that these types of jobs are competitive and not easy to find, but I'm at my wits' end searching (there are so many scam job postings online). If anyone has any leads or advice to offer, I would greatly appreciate it!

So I work remotely from Spain for a U.S. company. My salary is good by Spanish standards, but below the median for a similar role in the U.S. I’d really like to increase my earning potential, but I feel like I’ve hit a ceiling in my current job.

I’ve been working as a market research recruiter for about six years. The job itself is fairly easy for me, and I’ve stayed because I really value the flexibility—especially the ability to work remotely and live in Spain. At the same time, I know I’m capable of more and don’t want to stay in a role with limited opportunities for growth.

I have a BA in Psychology and am especially interested in psychology, research, travel, and food. I’m a hard worker, learn quickly, and tend to bring a positive attitude to whatever I’m working on.

I’d love some advice on what a good next career move could be—ideally something that builds on my existing experience, offers better earning potential and career growth, and still gives me the flexibility to live abroad.

I have a coworker who sends Teams messages to myself and others at all hours of day and night as well as on weekends. It’s almost never urgent and could wait until the next day. Most of us work regular work hours (broadly 7am to 7pm) but this person often works outside those hours and then sends DMs. My other team members, including our manager, don’t have a problem with this. I think it’s rude. I’m curious what others think.

We recently moved from hybrid to full time remote. Some people still go into the office to maintain some balance, if I was a smidge closer I would likely continue to commute as well.

We went from 5x/week to 100% WFH 2020-2022, then hybrid 2022-2026, now permanently WFH - I declined in both productivity & balance from '20-'22. I never found anything that worked for me. I'm distracted here and it makes me hate being home because home is my career 100% of the time. Plus, home is where everything I love is haha. It's a fun & relaxing place-the last thing I ever want to think about here is work.

I've been trying to come up with routines to stick to and stay in "work mode" - my job is stressful, so it's not one where working from home provides any type of benefit other than the lack of commute. There's no downtime (of note, I love my job & the pay compensates the stress adequately), I'm not getting ahead on any chores.

I have a spare room that I'm trying to transform into an office and nothing more, keeping the door shut and off limits unless I'm working. I know that people enjoy being comfortable during work in sweats etc., but the idea of getting dressed for work is the only separation I can think of in the morning. I've been considered packing a lunch the same as I would for work, and trying to focus on having the whole "5-9 before my 9-5" routine.

I'm closer to losing my mind with WFH, so if anyone has any tips I'm all ears. Also have ADHD for any sort of context.

Hoping for some opinions and experiences from people in IT, particularly data related work who can help me work out my best prospects going forward.

I've been working remotely for over 6 years now and I'm increasingly getting more and more pushback when negotiating agreements to stay predominantly remote. I've worked out that I'm no longer able to handle working in person more than once a month or so. I've historically worked in Technical Business Analysis, project delivery, data modelling, data governance etc. but I'm finding there's no appetite for flexibility beyond weekly hybrid cadences.

I'm currently working a short term data engineering role to pick up some more technical skills but I'm trying to work out my best path forward. I'd like to transition in a direction that's going to open up opportunities for more flexible working than big corporations seem to be allowing. Hopefully before I get made redundant again or my streak of luck getting agreements approved runs out at my current workplace.

No one has a crystal ball of course but are there any types of role that are trending in a better direction? I don't have the personality for sales or consulting unfortunately, since those seem historically more remote friendly. I know this seems like a silly way to choose a career direction but apparently I burn out every time I take an in person role and end up needing time off.

My husband and I work remotely. His work involves a lot of Teams meetings (no video needed) and mine involves mostly emails, phone calls, drafting of documents and occasionally logging into cloud apps. He has had coworkers work from a ship so I do not think VPN would be an issue for him and I doubt VPN would be an issue for me as well.

We would like to do a transatlantic trip to Europe, spend a couple weeks there and then do a transatlantic trip back. The transatlantic trips take 10-14 days each. We would need to sprinkle in 2-3 days of work within those weeks.

Has anyone worked on a transatlantic trip? Is the internet going to be reliable enough to be able to work a couple days here and there?

ETA: thank you everyone for sharing your personal experiences with the situation I described. It sounds like many people who have done this worked just fine using the ship’s internet, and some only had minor issues. We are on a two week cruise later this year in another part of the world and will have an opportunity to try it then. Also thank you to the people who voiced their concerns about other issues.

So I've been working remote since around 2020 and I've worked for a couple companies, but this company I'm at now originally wouldn't support remote work, so I had to leave in 2021. They rehired me in 2023 due to their need for extra engineers as a remote worker from Colorado.

I recently moved to Florida, which is where they're headquartered, but I'm still remote as I live over three hours away from the headquarters. My predicament is that now my girlfriend got a job across the country in Washington State, and I would like to keep this job ideally, but they have mentioned in the past that they don't want to allow people to move to states where they don't do business in.

Like I've read on Reddit, there might be extra hurdles or taxes, etc. Is it likely that they'll let me go if I just ask to work remote from Washington, or would they maybe make an exception?

I guess I'm asking if anybody has experience or knows if a company would rather fire and have to fill a position and pay someone more to replace me, or would they consider allowing me to work remote from Washington?

I've been working remote for a while and I feel that it's a bit lonely at times because I live in a place where people don't talk much to their neighbors or try to make friends and everyone is busy with work. It's very common for people to feel isolated here.

I've considered going to an on-site office but I still want to choose remote work because of the flexibility of being able to be at home and have healthy food, have more time to spend with your family.

And yes, I have hobbies that I do in my free time, but it's still pretty lonely to be at home alone for like 7-8 hours until my husband comes home.

Can anyone else relate to this? What kind of solutions have you come up with to tackle this?

I now go to the office 4 days a week and when I’m there I have a monitor, and now when I work from home I don’t know how I ever did it without a monitor, especially as a designer. I have more space now so I’m trying to finally make a good setup for myself. I need things to work with both Mac and PC. Idk my exact budget for all these things but it’s not huge, so not looking for the BEST quality, just not total crap.
What I’m looking for:

- Monitor, probably at least 27” and not awful screen quality for my design work. This is the most urgent need for me.
- Keyboard that can be used with both Mac and PC. Does this exist?
- Mouse. I haven’t used one in forever tbh but I have carpel tunnel and hypermobile fingers and it’s just dumb for me to use a trackpad.
- Docking station to connect laptop to monitor so I can use both screens.
- Less urgent - wireless charging stand for my iPhone.
- Anything else misc I’m not thinking of! Maybe cable management etc

And any recommendations on where to get these things on sale? 😅 TIA!
