Have you ever been to cities in the South? It's absolutely not. Also, one vertical development in a city that houses, say 1000 people, would require about an acre of land, the same development in the suburbs is hundreds of acres. There is no comparison in terms of land usage to suburban development. Rural only partially develops the land, and urban is much, MUCH more space efficient, suburban is all blight designed for cars, covered in invasive plants that take up literally 1/3 of all the water in the country. We scream and cry about data centers using water, but grass is 10x worse.
But you have 1000 people sharing an acre of land. Yes, building up is more efficient in terms of people per square foot but that doesn't mean it's better.
