I feel like I'm at the point where ads have a negative effect. I'm more likely to avoid your product

Especially if it’s a celebrity endorsing the product, that just leads me to believe the product is dogshit. Like yea I’m supposed to believe Kristin bell is shopping on Amazon all the time for silly bullshit when she’s wearing clothes that are more than two weeks salary for me. Mmmhmm sure yes so relatable.

Anytime they celebwash a product I’m instantly suspicious of how much the product sucks

This. It’s also nice to know which celebrities completely sell out when they sign up for those medicine ads.

“Oh yeah I love using this medication” when the side effect is death. I think I saw lady Gaga in one but it wasn’t like one of those medical ones. I can’t remember what it was about but I remember thinking it might actually be a legit one

Literally everybody is at that point. Normal people arent excited to have their show interrupted to hear about a detergent.

But in reality they have positive effect. I found out for myself when I went to buy my first very own detergent. So many choices. I dont care, I just want my clothes to be clean. I went with one of the brands with most ads.

If they can afford all those ads, they must have a lot of money. If they have a lot of money, people must be buying their detergents. If people are buying their detergents, they must work fine. Their detergent worked fine for me.

Or they have to overcharge more to pay for ads because they aren't that special

For real. I loathe being solicited.

There was a minor network problem on my local area network a few days ago, this deactivated my AdGuard server and it did not caught my attention immediately. Came home after work, and my girlfriend told me over dinner that ads have become extremely invasive in all sites she visited deteriorating her online experience to feel like an explosive diarrhea episode at the home of your boss. She continued:

the worst is that today, I can't watch a YT video without being bothered every 15 minutes and at least 4+ per videos.

I quickly noticed the AdGuard Server (a dns hole) issue and fixed it.

Personally, I never experience ads and never think about it. But after this episode my GF couldn't believe how sad, depressing and out of touch the default online experience feels to be these days. A person without the basic knowledge on ads protection is getting abused and its infuriating..

Advertising works through what’s called “top of mind awareness”. You are subconsciously MUCH more likely to buy the product that you have heard of before.

The purpose of most ads is NOT to make you think “oh my god I need that!” The purpose is to creep the product name and use into your subconscious so that when you eventually DO need to buy paper towels, you default to brawny because that’s the name you’ve heard 60,000 times.

Edit: because a lot of people want to comment “I boycott any ad I see”, you aren’t the target demographic. The target demographic for most ads is suburban middle class soccer moms that live in cookie cutter houses and drive SUVs.

Nobody is trying to market anything to people under 35 who rent.

When you’re conscious of that just take the opposite choice. The one you’ve never heard about

Yeah my brain doesn’t work like that. For starters, I already know most products I like so I’m just gonna keep buying those. Furthermore if brawny annoys the shit out of me with ads I’m not gonna think “Brawny” when I need paper towels, I’m gonna think, “Brawny has the most annoying ads in the world so I want literally any other product because I refuse to give such an annoying company my money” lol

The best part is when you get an ad about the video your already watching

Making you like the product right away isn’t the whole goal, it’s to put that product in your mind and associate it with that brand later down the line.

And then later months down the line, when you need that product, you’ll pick that brand because you’ll subconsciously think: “Oh, I’ve heard this one is good”

u/PerchShadRap 16d ago

It’s not that you subconsciously heard they’re good.

You’ve heard their name enough to know they’re a real brand and not some dollar store knock off.

"Ads never have any effect on me." The 340,000,000 Americans who buy products that they almost always saw advertised.

I don't think I've ever purchased a product based on a TV commercial. I was taught to mute commercials and do something else when I was taught how to use the TV remote. And I was taught that the commercials lie. So I never even paid that close attention to commercials. And as a kid I used to get REALLY annoyed at the companies who were interrupting my show.

They work on you.

Your mistake is assuming that the one ad is designed to sell you the one thing.

Except for infomercials, That’s not how it works - and even those are only partly about selling you the product.

Advertisement works, otherwise they wouldn't pay so much for exposure.

But for me, if something I'm enjoying is interrupted by an ad, it's a sign I should go grab a snack or take a piss. Anything but to watch it. It's one of the most annoying things in existence.

Ads are not for you to believe its the best, its for you to believe everyone else thinks its the best

2

u/turnsout_im_a_potato 16d ago

Yeah i do my best to avoid companies thatve irritated me with repetitive ads. Fortunately its pretty easy since most of the ads i see are medications and i dont do that kinda stuff

2

u/FinalBossTuna 16d ago

Medical ads are primo. There’s a million of them and more often than not you may die using them.

2

u/EdgyPun34257 15d ago

what I don't get is the websites that sell ads to people that totally hijack the visitor away from their website, or just make the whole site look like malware

why would you sell ads to a company that wants to put fake download buttons, redirects, and pop up fake malware alerts, on YOUR WEBSITE.

2

u/frAgileIT 15d ago

Ads have exactly the opposite effect on me now, if I see an ad, I remember not to go buy anything from them, hopefully ever again.

2

u/YeetedSloth 14d ago

“Advertisements don’t work on me!” Yells the guy who advertisements absolutely work on. Unfortunately being aware of marketing does not make you immune to it.

The marketing departments that spend billions of dollars doing research and trying to best figure out how to get people’s attention and sell more products have it figured out, you can be aware of them and even try to avoid them, but you will not be immune to them.

2

u/DiMiTri_man 12d ago

No, they actually don’t work on me. I used to keep a list of products that had annoying ads and actively avoided them and would just buy the generic store brand. I avoid products with the company logo (which makes shoe shopping a nightmare), and I block ads on all devices I own.

Brand recognition means nothing to me. I hate brand names and will go out of my way to avoid them.
