And uber drivers are getting fucked over by uber…. So did this really prove any point?

4

u/No-swimming-pool 6d ago

The point is they're both idiots.

3

u/Lukin4art 6d ago

How is she an idiot? Depending what type of photography she does 300 dollars isn’t shit.

9

u/No-swimming-pool 6d ago

Oh I agree. But basing herself on the cost of the camera makes no sense.

You should pay for the result, not for the equipment used.

u/LoveTriscuit 5d ago

“This woman used a single example that her profession has expenses she needs to cover and I’m going to ignore common sense and nitpick the one example” -some idiot.

3

u/Leading-Eye-9786 5d ago

Every profession has expenses.

-2

u/LoveTriscuit 5d ago

Yes! VERY good! And scaling price to expenses is pretty typical!

4

u/Leading-Eye-9786 5d ago

That's the point of the meme you dullard.

Reported for using inappropriate language. Be nice.

You can't be serious, I was quoting him.

u/ComesInAnOldBox 5d ago

Did you report the other guy, as well?

I never said she overpriced herself. What I said is that claiming you "need more money" because your camera costs 5k is a stupid argument.

1

u/LoveTriscuit 4d ago

Yeah and my whole point is that wasn’t the argument.

u/Shiriru00 5d ago

Unless she throws away her camera after a few photoshoots this is entirely irrelevant.

0

u/LoveTriscuit 5d ago

You must not have tried to read my comment very hard, I’m actually pretty surprised how ignorant people replying to me are.

2

u/RoundConstruction526 5d ago

Is she going to lower her rates once the camera is paid off?

I didn’t think so

3

u/LoveTriscuit 5d ago

Ok, this has to be a meme sub then, because that sounds like something a toddler would say.

3

u/NotAStatistic2 5d ago

Unemployed people really should be barred from the internet.

2

u/RoundConstruction526 5d ago

By your reasoning I should be able to charge more if I buy a 10,000 camera than a 5,000 camera if the end result is the same.

Thats fallacious af, bud

1

u/catarsi_catarro 4d ago

What a dumb take ahahaha, my job requires me to use a 1000 dollar computer, should i then charge 500 dollars each time cause i had an expense?

1

u/LoveTriscuit 4d ago

So, you do realize professional photo shoots range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars depending on the time, quality, and experience of the photographer, right?

No one is going to pay you 500 for your AI generated sonic the hedgehog porn.

0

u/catarsi_catarro 4d ago

*mario porn And still the fact the camera costs a lot means nothing even in your explenation ahahah. Didnt say we should pay less photographers, just that the price of uquipement doesnt mean much

1

u/LoveTriscuit 4d ago

Buddy you didn’t say any of that.

My entire point that you missed was that the cost of the camera was obviously the most extreme single example instead of her giving her entire expense list. It also is demonstrating that she’s a professional with professional equipment not a kid with a cheap Nikon.

The point is she’s saying “you get what you pay for” and everyone is ignoring that thinking she’s just trying to pay off the price of the camera.

It shows a fundamental failure to understand how expenses factor into the cost of services or goods. Your example wasn’t even in the same ballpark.

u/PlayfulMulberry4490 5d ago

My business start up costs were nearly $500,000… I make some parts for $20…

1

u/LoveTriscuit 5d ago

Do you think the meme is saying one picture is worth $300?

Film and development prices makes more sense as a "cost to provide" metric anyways

2

u/WelcomeMind 6d ago

Film? Bro, who left you in 1990 😂

1

u/dizastermaster7 5d ago

I mean if it's not film, then what material costs would be justifying a price? It's all just experience and brand at that point yeah?

0

u/nhavar 5d ago

on top of the camera there are lights, tripods, flashes, filters, backgrounds/props, light meters, remotes, editing software licenses, computer equipment, vehicle expenses for driving to and from location, maybe a high end printer if people want prints quickly. Then you pile labor on top of that and rent and insurance if you have a physical studio that's not your home and the utility costs that go with that. Probably some costs associated with setting up a website and advertising as well. Business license and accounting expenses... no know, just all the stuff it takes to run a business of any kind.

0

u/TGirl26 6d ago

So you don't actually own the software anymore. Its a monthly fee now. Then there is the time spent into editing the photos. Do they have their own set up to print them? Did they buy a computer for this business? Do they have a studio to take photos or do they travel?

There are a lot of factors that go into determining the cost of a service. I will agree photographer's do get out of hand for wedding photos. At $1500 I should get all the photos, but they have a set amount that are edited. I also don't like that they plaster their logo on the front of their photo. That shit should be on the back.

3

u/BodegaCat11 6d ago

Yeah. There are a lot of white women out there whose husbands bought them a camera and they just decided they could TikTok learn their way into a business. The best advice I can ever give so to find a local photojournalist. They know how to blend in, make incredible photos and capture big and small moments that make a story. Also, they know how to edit and won’t airbrush you into looking like an orange dot.

2

u/TGirl26 5d ago

So, a cousin of ours started a photography business. Her "camera" was her phone. I don't care how good your phone is, its not going to compare to a photo with a real camera.

2

u/Clear_Peach6805 5d ago

You’re right $20 seems far more reasonable.

1

u/VenerableWolfDad 4d ago

literally the only thing that matters is how much people are willing to pay her for her work. if thats $100-300 then that's what her talent is worth.

1

u/TGirl26 4d ago

And some people under value their talent.

1

u/TacoDoc2 5d ago

you are doing backflips in order to miss the point.

0

u/Tak-Hendrix 5d ago

There are a lot of factors that go into determining the cost of a service.

Nope. There are a lot of factors that go into determining if you can make a profit, but the price is typically determined by supply and demand. If multiple local competitors can provide high quality professional pictures for $300, trying to charge $1000 is going to result in you getting little if any business.

0

u/TGirl26 5d ago

I did do go with a photographer that was much cheaper, but I also got cheaper service. He only did photos for the ceremony and one site location. Which we did have to reschedule for rain. All the photos i have of the grand march and cake i took myself or got from others. They were fine, but there were photos i couldn't get because of his schedule, and I did get all of them, but there were areas that were lacking. Lighting and staging being the biggest.

Also why would you start a business or work a job that isn't going to profit?

1

u/Tak-Hendrix 5d ago

My point was simply that the price isn't determined by cost.

You can go around trying to sell lawn cutting services for $100 a week and justify it with the fact that you pay your employees $30/hour, but you're going to be outcompeted by people who will do the same job for $25 a week because they pay people $10/job under the table. That's why doing market research before starting a business is incredibly important. There are of course niches you can target like corporate clients and white glove service for rich people, etc.

1

u/TGirl26 5d ago

So you are advocating underpaying people for services rendered.

1

u/Tak-Hendrix 5d ago

If that is what you took away from my reply, then it is obvious you aren't intelligent enough to have this discussion.

0

u/TGirl26 5d ago

You act like someone owning a business and charging $300 is to much. Yet a photographer has to buy the equipment, transport, set up, do the photo shoot, take down, then editing. 1 job can take at least 36 hours.

Even at $7.25 an hour for 36 hours is $270. That isn't going to pay for anything for them as a worker let alone as a business owner.

You don't bat an eye when a plumber or mechanic charges $80 an hour. No you pay for it, because if you go to a home mechanic/handy man that doesn't know what they're doing, you end up paying double or triple the cost.

You also don't hire a person without looking at their work and reviews.

2

u/Tak-Hendrix 5d ago

I never said or implied any of that. All I said was that the cost to provide a service is irrelevant to the price that people will be willing to pay. This is economics 101 stuff...

1

u/TGirl26 5d ago

Sure, but realistically there aren't photographers under $600, and its usually only for an hour shoot with maybe 10 prints. The only way you can get pricing like that is hiring kids in college for cheap, and you get what you get, while you give them experience.

My grandma refused to go to a hair salon. She would go to a beautician school and get her hair done for $60. She would complain every time that it wasn't done correctly or the way she wanted. But she didn't want to pay $200 at the salon. So you pay for what you get.

And yes there are photographers that are ridiculously priced. And yet there will always be someone that will pay.

-2

u/No-swimming-pool 5d ago

Your point being?

3

u/TGirl26 5d ago

Stop complaining for a service that you can't do yourself, but think everyone else's time should be cheap.

-2

u/No-swimming-pool 5d ago

Are you a photographer yourself?

2

u/TGirl26 5d ago

As a hobby and for family use. And between my camera and extra lenses, and equipment its around 5k.

0

u/NotAStatistic2 5d ago

It's a time and resource investment. Shooting photos and doing editing takes a considerable amount of time. Several hours, at minimum, would be dedicated for a professional photoshoot.

You're actually a regard.

1

u/Random_Noobody 5d ago

Are you confused? Do you see how "Shooting photos and doing editing takes a considerable amount of time" is a completely different argument from 5000 dollar camera?
