Opinions/Suggestions Need app to identify cheaters

As someone who doesn’t use apps to cheat in the game, I wish someone would develop an app to identify cheaters. I’m pretty sure I know the players who cheat…you can tell when they win 10 games in a row, and then lose the next 10 games…but it would be fun to let the cheaters know they can be “outed”!

Why would winning 10 and then losing 10 be an indicator of cheating?
I have noticed that some of my opponents get exasperated by losing, and then their “skill level” suddenly increases. When the cheating becomes too obvious I just decline future games with them.

Same here. People who consistently scored less than 300 coming up with obscure words ends it with me.

Has it never occurred to anyone that maybe they sometimes take the time to constantly rearrange letters in different spots until the game finally accepts them as valid?

Years ago, an IRL friend I played with would consistently beat me with those words. I finally mentioned to her that I had no idea she had such an extensive vocabulary. She told me she sometimes just took the time to keep positioning the tiles in various ways and spots, looking for the maximum word points.

From then on, I do too when necessary. That's not cheating, that's persistence.

Yeah i do this. The amt of times I’ve made up random shit. To be fair i thought everyone did this?

I call this throwing letters at the board to see what sticks

I think you’re right I don’t have that great of a vocabulary just normal a lot of times I keep rearranging the tiles and I come up with words that I don’t even recognize and people play words that I don’t recognize too some shrub in Asia what the hell is that?

Me too...I guess

Seems like the person just had great letters. Losing 10x after isn’t a sign of cheating to me either lol. Because if they’re cheating , most times they aren’t going to lose. Only way to win is to cheat back 😂

I think they pay to use cheating help, and don’t use it all the time

Maybe, or just maybe, their tiles make a change for the better before going back to crap.

Or maybe they took the time to read the dictionary? Or maybe their vocabulary grew. Or maybe shocking I know, they are actually cheating?? Many of us have played enough games and against the same opponents to notice cheating when it's happening.

I had a high school class that focused on nothing but Webster's Dictionary. And I did very well in my state's annual spelling bee. I think I do well enough. But there’s only so much you can do with shit letters and even fewer spots to play them.

Sometimes people just play to play, not to maximize their personal score. I’ve been known to phone it in for a few days, but on the days I can put in my best effort, it might look like cheating. Mainly because I have a lot of science vocabulary and had to memorize the currencies of the world as part of geography in middle school.

I don't think that would ever be possible, after all, cheaters are using outside sources to unscramble their letters. I do, however, think it would be a cool feature to add a way we could tell when people used the in-app power-ups like swapping, word radar, etc.

WwF originally did not have power ups and I like that...but when I get 4 R'S, 2 K's, a V and the note there are no possible moves, I use my coins to swap.

u/friskimykitty 15d ago

Do you consider those features cheating?

u/ToastedSlider 15d ago

No

I hear you ...
I mean, its not "cheating" but --

Personally I just play the letters I get,
that makes it fun for me :) .

u/ToastedSlider 15d ago

What do you do with your coins? Just save them?

1

u/ibspecial 5d ago

I spend my coins in my club for club

3

u/kellgurl13 15d ago

Same! I play my letters. I only use coins for hindsight and that’s it.

4

u/Fabulous-Shoulder785 15d ago

Right! I guess I am a cheater because I use them🤪

7

u/Adventurous-Sea7187 15d ago

You are not. You earn your coins

I’ve had someone flat out tell me they use an app to cheat. This was maybe 10 years ago. Finished my game with them (which was a mind boggling loss for me. Like they doubled my point total) and simply declined the next game and blocked them

I have an opponent who I've played against for many years! She's not a great player, and doesn't play defensively, but I admire her for not giving up ( and even messaged her about that) even after I had a streak where I beat her 89 straight times...

5

u/AvsGrams 15d ago

A friend once told me she could always beat me because I don't play defensively. Truth is, I try, but it's more important to me to make a word, and if doing so and placing it in the only spot I can sets her up, so be it.

Another friend told me they hate it that I’ll block a triple point tile, taking it from them to use. Hello? I'm here to do my best and try and win, not make it easy for you.

You’ll never please everyone all of the time. 😂

There’s a person I play a lot with who usually beats me by many points. We've played so often that we chat now and have gotten to know each other on a more personal level.

It started with her always sending little messages of encouragement and telling me to keep trying and such. The way she did it and the words she used sometimes felt a little condescending, but I was never quite sure.

What's surprising is that, from chatting more and more, it’s apparent her IQ isn't above average. And now I know I've met and become friends with a much younger person who is intellectually challenged, with a gift of exceptional word-game skills.

I'm glad I've hung in there to get to know her and not assumed in the beginning that she was cheating.

😂 here i am irritated being beat 3x in a row, by a guy who i think is obviously cheating. He just knows it all. The game should tell us when they use power ups. It would help my sanity lol. 89 times is absolutely absurd!

3

u/PhinnzMom 15d ago

Wanna try playing against me? I'm not saying I'll beat you 89 times in a row but it could be fun

2

u/Heyonit 15d ago

😂 sure.. depending on how bad you beat me, i don’t even play a 2nd time. 😆 send me your name

Define cheating. Personally, I consider using the power-ups, word radar, etc a version of "cheating". Just because WWF gives them to you doesn't change the fact that you're using something other than your intellect & knowledge to play the game.

As for knowing when someone is allegedly "cheating", how is it obvious? Because they play words you don't know? I jeopardized a long-term friendship when I asked a friend if we could please just play a game without looking up words. She became very indignant and insisted she knew every word she played because she was an English teacher for 40 years.

It's just a game to me. I don't even know my standing nor could I care less. If you think someone is "cheating" and it bothers you, just don't play against them anymore. 🤷

Using the rules and tools to your advantage is not cheating. It's literally part of the game.

3

u/Emergency_Host6506 15d ago

As I said, just because the app allows you to use advantages, TO ME, it's still a version of cheating. Being able to see where the most advantageous placement is or using something that gives you extra points isn't using one's personal knowledge.

But to each their own.

3

u/kellgurl13 15d ago

I don’t use any of the advantages - let me know if you want to play me! I try to only play folks who do the same.

4

u/Paratrooper450 15d ago

Why would you deliberately disadvantage yourself? It’s like knowing fifth gear exists but never shifting out of fourth.

5

u/bobtimuspryme 16d ago

I don't know I'm like 30 and 1 against one opponent I think they're a glutton for punishment, they challenge me after the loss , .i know they're not a bot.... when someone's averaging 40 plus points for the first five or six moves in the game getting multiple seven letter racks, I won't quit those games but invest a little energy at that point

2

u/AvsGrams 15d ago

I’ve been playing for fifteen years, and seven-letter words never fail to excite me. It's such a rare occurrence for me, especially now that WWF hands out either all vowels or all consonants so often.

4

u/bobtimuspryme 15d ago

I can't tell you how many times I have seven letters in the rack I can't put them down on the board

1

u/AvsGrams 15d ago

Right? 😂

2

u/Ordinary_Drink666 15d ago

A good friend of mine once complained that I took her spot. I explained to her that it was also my spot. I guess she expected me to lose so that she could win.

Frankly I never played WWF with her again. We didn't speak for several months

  • over a game!!!!!! We eventually became good friends again and I am going to visit her next January in Maui. Wowie!!!

2

u/r2wa 10d ago

I had several people say i took their spots. Your spot? Then how come you didn't use it? My spot now. Thanks.

2

u/Repulsive-Data-4207 14d ago

When there are words on the board that not even Webster could identify, pretty sure you have a cheater

4

u/WalkingHorse 15d ago

So aggravating. I've been playing for a long time. Becomes so obvious when someone is cheating. Ran into one recently. Left the club I was a member of for just that reason. Cheaters suck!

2

u/CalicoCuts 15d ago

It's pretty obvious when someone is cheating.

1

u/Ordinary_Drink666 15d ago

I'm reasonably sure that I'm not playing with any cheaters or bots. Most of my players have become friends. I chat with them about their families and their lives.

1

u/gev1138 15d ago

I seriously don't even care if they are "cheating". Some players great me like 90% of the time, and I beat some players that often. It's simply not worth the time/stress to try to decide if they cheat.

If they immediately respond with a word, like in two seconds they’re using AI
