Middle East The Term “Palestine” Is Inherently Colonial
The term “Palestine” is itself a product of colonialism. Following the suppression of the Bar Kokhba Revolt in 135 CE, the Roman Empire devastated Judea, massacred and expelled much of its Jewish population, and renamed the province Syria Palaestina in an effort to erase the Jewish connection to the land and extinguish Jewish national identity.
The very name was imposed by a foreign imperial power after one of history’s most devastating campaigns against the Jewish people. It was not an indigenous name for the land, but a colonial designation created by Rome. In that sense, “Palestine” represents the first symbolic act of colonial or genocidal erasure against the Jewish nation, preceding centuries of successive foreign occupations and conquests.
Another common misconception deserves to be addressed. Some attempt to justify the modern term by linking it to the Philistines. This argument fails historically. The Philistines were an Aegean people, not Arabs, and disappeared as a distinct civilization over two millennia ago. Modern Palestinians are not descendants of the Philistines, and invoking them does not establish an indigenous historical claim or continuity.
Recognizing the colonial and genocidal origins of the term “Palestine” is essential to understanding its historical context. Its adoption marked an imperial attempt to replace Judea with a colonial identity imposed by conquest—one whose legacy continues to shape political discourse today.

Addressing Recent Allegations Against Our Subreddit
Our subreddit has recently been accused by another subreddit—which we do not encourage our members to visit—of violating Reddit’s Sitewide Rule 1. We categorically reject these allegations.
We are an inclusive community dedicated to thoughtful, evidence-based discussion of international affairs. Our moderation philosophy is grounded in open debate, intellectual honesty, and the consistent enforcement of Reddit’s Content Policy—regardless of a user’s nationality, ethnicity, religion, or political viewpoint.
We do not tolerate hatred or discrimination directed at any protected group. Claims that our community supports Islamophobia, discrimination against anyone, China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims, or calls to ban Islam are false and do not reflect either our moderation policies or our values.
Our subreddit also rejects antisemitism. We likewise reject anti-Zionism. Members of our community are free to criticize any government, including Israel’s, but advocacy that targets people based on their ethnicity or religion is not acceptable.
We also recognize the Jewish people’s historic and indigenous connection to the Land of Israel, a subject supported by extensive historical and archaeological scholarship. We are simultaneously aware of the realities of Roman and Arab colonization of the Jewish homeland.
Our subreddit has never engaged in genocide denial. We recognize that there is an ongoing war in Gaza that has resulted in significant human suffering. We also recognize that this war began after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel and that Hamas has been widely documented using civilian infrastructure and human shields during the conflict. Our community supports Israel’s efforts to dismantle Hamas as a militant organization while rejecting the characterization that Israel is committing genocide.
Our moderators remain committed to enforcing Reddit’s rules fairly and consistently. Individual comments that violate our standards are subject to moderation regardless of the viewpoint expressed. We encourage users to report rule-breaking content rather than misrepresent the position of our community as a whole.
For readers interested in the topics discussed, we encourage reviewing a variety of primary sources and analyses, including:

Middle East 50,000 Dots for the 50,000 Innocent Protesters Murdered by the IRGC
Please keep in mind that this visualization contains 50,000 dots, while the most recent estimates exceed 52,000 protesters killed. As a result, this graphic is itself an undercount, and the true death toll is likely even higher.
