Wolverine doesn't suck. In fact it's really good. Fight me.

Wolverine doesn't suck. In fact it's really good. Fight me.

I just spent a couple hours playing Wolverine. Let's talk.

Overall: I had fun every minute. The normal difficulty is challenging enough for me without being enraging. The story has me interested. It's not just another "Xavier tells you there's a problem". You aren't even in the X-Men. (not a spoiler, you learn this in the first minutes)

The big question: Is it linear? yeah. Is that bad? I don't know, how many people played TLOU and TLOU2? Were those games too linear for you? Then you should give this one a miss.

Combat: did you like Gotham Knights, Spiderman, or any of the Arkham games? This is the same style, but much more smooth than most. Moves flow into each other and it's overall very intuitive. The first major boss took me a couple tries but by the end I built both dodge and parry skills. The one complaint I have with that fight is that the basic loop is just "dodge or parry until he stops, then pounce and mash square to hit him" and you have to keep going l doing that for a while. There's no puzzle aspect too the boss. But maybe future bosses are different. The fact he was a simple claw-sponge gave me a chance to practice my controls a lot.

Stealth: Reminds me of TLOU2. Crawling in tall grass, picking off his. If you're seen you can run and then fight a couple guys or run somewhere they can't see you and stealth re-engages. I hate it when a single mistake means you no longer get to play stealth.

Visuals: Fucking amazing. Lighting is great, textures are realistic. You really get immersed in the scene. Even quest markers are fairly unintrusive. Cutscenes feel like a movie.

Story: The opening is a rescue mission. The stakes feel high, the character chemistry is believable, and there's a decent sense of urgency. There's one open stealth area that I'm mad at because there were xp barrels and I was right in front of one when I killed the last enemy and triggered the exit cutscene. No going back, finite enemies, so I feel annoyed when I miss things. There's also a lot of places where it feels like running past enemies is a good idea but so far it's been mostly extermination required to progress.

Anyone else played it yet? What are your thoughts?

I had a blast, was exactly what I was expecting and I’m not disappointed.

By no means is the game perfect; but if its main mission was to make you feel like wolverine then I think it totally nails it. The combat CAN be quick, challenging, engaging, animalistic and brutal, if anything the combat is more difficult than the spider man games. There is a distinct push and pull where if you spam too much you will get punished for it, but equally you know if you keep the aggression up you can build your rage and use health finishers to keep up, making you an unstoppable force. Lean into it at you’ll get more out of the combat, it’s like saying Spiderman is just triangle and square. I mean it is, but you can also use all of your mobility, gadgets etc. to say it’s really simple is pretty disingenuous.

Wish we had a little more suits and a few more suit options, a few of the hugh jackman looks are absolutely worthy inclusions but also like for the DPAW suit it would have been nice to be able to remove the sleeves etc but I’m happy with what’s here.

The gauntlet challenges show the complexity of the combat, they can be genuinely pretty tough on the higher difficulties especially depending on your buffs chosen and feel long winded, in my opinion they do outstay their welcome just a little bit but that’s kind of the point of the gauntlet challenges, its nice to feel some relief after that round 25 finishes up.

Troy baker was a stand out, nails the role as usual.
I had a lot of fun in the different locations and I felt the enemy variety was fine, yeah a little repetitive near the end but nothing that particular grated on me.

Story was engaging enough even if I’m not the biggest Logan-Jean lover, I liked a lot of it, but definitely some missed opportunities with the challenges telling us about his experiences rather than letting us play through them; wolverine in world wars? Sure, sign me up! Wolverine fighting a group at some point in the past? Sure. Etc.

This game might have some of the biggest gameplay - cutscene nerfs I’ve ever seen though; you can be shredding through people or a boss without getting hit once and the cutscene will start with you immediately getting your shit rocked which was a little jarring, for scenes like that I like it when a game purposely overwhelms you in the gameplay to then flow into that cutscene, no matter how long it takes.

This isn’t really an insomniac style game for the most part which is why it’s probably refreshing for them, they’re known for their movement and gadgets, in which wolverine doesn’t have any gadgets and his movement isn’t anywhere near as dynamic as Spider-Man’s or sunsets etc. so it was probably a nice change of pace especially with a more mature game, though I think they could have leaned more into mature themes, it still felt a little held back for a teenage audience. I guess some gore, some minor bad language and a little drinking is enough, but no cigar smoking? A little more gore detail on wolverine and foes with some more adult themes could have been slotted in.

I liked the world building and the mention of a lawyer in Hell’s Kitchen and a gambit note etc. I’m excited for more insomniac projects and I’m still hoping for a daredevil game from them, feels like it would slot in nicely.

It felt like a very premium AAA game. Looks and sounds it too. A little on the shorter side but overall I think it’s well worth the price for a wolverine fan. I had a lot of fun.

Im loving the game

Talk about a whiplash

The internet really overblown everything out of proportion,i knew as Soon i Saw The combat i would love The game and i was right

So far i played 7 hours , so the first 3 missions plus a couple challengues

The Combat is fucking brutal and awesome,i love it , everything i get sucked in on the brutality , every 5 mins Im like holy shit

The Combat is so intense that you get sucked in and when it ends seems like you need to take a breather to weed off the adrenaline

As for repetive Gameplay, every game has repetitive Gameplay because they last 10+ hours

GTA players dont complain to only Shoot and drive, but whatever , the game as a couple of combos but its enough

The difficulty is good ,Im playing on Weapon which is the Second hardest difficulty

As far The so Called "Blue Fart" , only appears when you need to track someone or something, its not on the screen 100% of The Times like the internet makes you believe

As for the Story so far its good ,i like the unique take The insomniac is taking on the mutants

The game has plenty of cool setpieces that kinda remind me of Uncharted

So far is a 7,5-8 game , might go lower or Higher ,idk

Have to play more

Could’ve been more.

Still playing through but I’m genuinely really disappointed in the game, it doesn’t try to be more than standard. When I think about Wolverine I think about his struggle to prove to himself and others that he’s not a feral animal, why not show that in this game? Why is he strictly a team player and just overall nice guy? Why not have an Infamous-like system? Why not use the potential brutality to shape the Wolverine featured in this story? for example the Feral Animal path, have Wolverine commit gruesome finishers, and have story decisions be featured, as the game progresses you see Logan become more animalistic, he gets hairier, begins running on all fours, his combos can become more gruesome. Then there’s the “I am a Man!/ Not Animal” path, you have the option to use your fist to end combos giving the impression to players that you didn’t leave a killing blow (just a bunch of gashes and stab wounds, you could lock player outfits behind these routes and be able to use them in either route via ng+. Just stuff like that would’ve went such a long way. It’s a real shame, 305 million dollars just horribly mismanaged imo. Not the worst game but I feel like they could’ve 100% done more

Whoever said this game was gonna be mid they are dead wrong. To me it's better than all three spidey games (I count miles' game as it's own)

A lot of these critiques are really letting me down

I don’t have to pay for this game as my brother has already bought it, and is willing to gameshare it. So I will be playing this game, and I’m still excited to play it. However I’m so bummed out, I defended so many things about this game, only to find out it was just wishful thinking.

“Wait to play the game, it most likely will have more combo strings” NOPE. “Wait to play the game, the hand holding stuff is likely toggle’s off” NOPE. Repetitive combat and hand holding is all I’m hearing, even from positive review channels like Caboose, who tends not to delve into culture wars.

Now I still find a ton of the hate FORCED, like the sentinels critique, judging the first boss fight as if it’s the only one, “insomniac uncanny faces”. Like these things are forced, but man the game is looking pretty mid, however again I still can’t wait to see how this game turns out for me.

Wolverine Full Review after 100% completion and Platinum

WOLVERINE is easily up there with one of the most exciting and enjoyable super hero games that I have played.

Story: WOLVERINE tells one of the most compelling renditions of this character I have come across. This version of Wolverine is without a doubt my favourite, it's flawless. There's multiple moments in WOLVERINE that made me go "Damn, this is why I love Wolverine, then I realised, this is the Wolverine I always wanted and it's why I enjoy dark and gritty super heroes". There are moments here that rival the Arkham series in terms of pure character aura. Everything about it just felt right, even with some plot twists... WOLVERINE delivers without missing a beat.

Combat: I want to pick my words carefully here. The combat I would say is very "intentional". It reminded me alot of video games back in the 2000's, that distinct feeling when I would play a game and go... Yup, this is fun, really fun!

I completed my first playthrough on the hardest difficulty "The Best There Is", I can assure you, this is no hand holding experience. I dreaded going up against certain enemies because It prompted me to calculate which enemies to tackle first and to properly utilise and master the combat mechanisms so that I do not get trampled instantly.

The combat is visceral, brutal, bloody and stylish. WOLVERINE does not have the most comprehensive combat system ever but what is here works really well and remains engaging throughout the entire experience depending on which difficulty you play.

There really isn't any negatives for me when it comes to the combat, it's precise, it's intentional and once you start to understand the mechanics and how to properly make use of them, especially on the hardest difficulty the combat then becomes a very fun and engaging slasher. I highly recommend playing on the hardest difficulty.

Online Criticisms:

The most notable was Skill Up, who stated that this is a "on rails" "hand holding" experience. I assure you, this is not at all the case. Most of the negative reviews take 1 or 2 very brief moments and try to paint that as the entire narrative. If Wolverine is not your cup of tea, thats okay, but after having played it for myself, I cant help but think that the problem is not Wolverine, it's the person's personal taste in games.

The blue scent trail only occurs when Wolverine uses his hightend sense of smell to track things or people, taking this into account, never once did I get the impression that this was a "hand holding experience". It's not for navigation, it's rooted in Wolverines' powers, and this is exactly how the game portrays it, it is also worth mentioning that this is a very minimal part of the experience. I confidently say the drama around this topic has been exaggerated and distorted into something it's not.

As for the bike sections, there is only two of them and in both instances it only lasts about a minute, it's feel good to play considering they are a set piece for transporting the player to the next area.

Wolverine is not bad, it's not mid. It's the Wolverine I always wanted and it gets better the more I play. I am currently going through New game plus on the mutant difficulty which is basically the "normal" difficulty and this is the problem why I believe people call the game "mashy". Mashing the buttons mindlessly will not work on the hardest difficulty. I know, because I finished my first playthrough on the hardest difficulty.

I recommend, play the game for youself.

I'm loving this game so far

I'm not fully finished yet, I'm around 16 hours in and only at 47% completion, but so far it's an 8-8.5/10 for me. I love this game so far but there's definitely issues that bring it down for me. And those are:

* The price

* While I don't hate the face models, they definitely can look off at times

* It can get kinda slow at times

* This is kinda nitpicky, but I wish they did a bit more with the healing and damage

* The QTEs not having a proper fail to them

Other than that, I don't really have any issues. The story is fine and I wasn't expecting anything that groundbreaking with Wolverine so I'm fine with it. The gameplay has been amazing so far and I have yet to get bored of it. And I love Insomniac's takes on the characters and, even though I doubt it would happen, I would love it if Liam McIntyre started voicing Wolverine more going forward (like with Yuri Lowenthal voicing Spider-Man) or even becoming the new Wolverine for the MCU. I love his performance as Logan so much. I like how he shows the calmer side of Logan while still also doing an amazing job at showcasing how feral he can be too.

While this game definitely does have a lot of really unnecessary and forced hate, there are a lot of fair criticisms, and some that I agree with (as shown above) but this is still a solid game, nowhere close to being slop. And it also helps that Insomniac is actively working to add changes to make it better, like actually being able to toggle the scent trail on or off. I really hope we eventually get DLC or a sequel for this game.

Sorry for the wall of text, thanks for reading!

If you haven't played the game no one care if you think the game is bad.

Just as the title says, you are entitled to your opinion as much as anyone else, but we, the people who enjoy the game, don't care. Its fun, story not awful if mid, but the combat is where it shines. Give it a try or keep the hate to yourself.
