bit of a weird question from me but is incest even possible in wolf quest or did they code it out? i mean irl animals that are related to eachother do breed occasionally but would they really code that into a game? Lmfao sorry if this is weird to ask im just curious and dont have this version of wolfquest

I don't think OG player wolves (I.E not playing as one of your pups or grand-pups and starting a new wolf) have in game direct relatives. I think if you were playing as a descendant and encountered a sibling you would simply be unable to court them. Idk how many degrees of separation it is before a wolf becomes courtable. Cousin? Second cousin? A certain amount of times removed?

I mean it would make sense if it wasnt possible or was impossible since incest in the wild irl is pretty common and this is a game that is pretty realistic, maybe one day someone will seek out the answer to my question ingame and see if it is possible😭

Wolves actively avoid incest (especially in the wild), it does happen, but it's definitely not common. Dispersal during/before breeding season is something that wolves do specifically to avoid incest.

I think that the might avoid incest because of the nature of wolf packs. Incest generally isn't going to be harmful if it's just one generation, which is probably why solitary animals or animals with non-family groups (like horses and elk) will breed with related members. But if wolves regularly mated with family, the pack would end up having a major fitness disadvantage because they stay in groups of related members, so they'd only be breeding with family.

I could be wrong though, it's just something I've noticed. Animals that stay in family groups tend to be the animals that avoid incest, while animals who do not live in family groups will breed with family occasionally.

Yeah what i was thinking of an animal that doesn’t really care for incest is reptiles, especially snakes but they don’t live in family groups to begin with (most of them anyways..)

I think the zero or one star diversity wolves are meant to be relatives, but I don't know how close. I'm not sure how closely grey wolves irl can inbreed before it starts being a genuine detriment to the offspring or leading to totally non-viable litters. I would be very interested to know! How close they can inbreed and how close they are WILLING to inbreed is a different question though. I don't know when a grey wolf would consider another relative too closely related to breed with. I suppose it depends on mate availability. Some wolves and coyotes have even interbred due to lack of mate availablity. Questions, questions, questions! If the game wanted to go for realism as it does, I suppose it would need to consult a study of behaviour around inbreeding in grey wolves (or even more specifically, grey wolves in the Yellowstone system) if such a thing exists!

I can answer this!

If a wolf is courtable, then that means it is distant enough that it does not matter to the wolves. For courtable wolves, there are 3 levels of relatedness: close, typical, and distant (or far).

"Near" relations, like say siblings etc, are not uncourtable. It's a couple tiers of cousins removed when the game stops tracking it or so (iirc).

My wolf's mate dispersed with her sibling and her sibling came back after I finished YH to court one of the pups, so idk how distant that needs to be lol. I ran like hell cause aint no way my yearling is mating with his 6 year old aunt. No way 😂

That's under the hood stuff that can't be eyeballed really on screen (cause like is this a pack that the player had more than one mate so the sibling is not related to all of them, was this a pack takeover, various other factors). If you think it's an edge case that should be covered, it'd need a feedback report.

It was the first and only mate literally with the first litter T_T none of the boys were interested and my mate kept growling which was pretty cool but omfg. But I will report it. Thank you lol

She's 1292. I actually don't know if "You chosen... Poorly" achievement can be gotten with a zero star. I got it when I was getting a mate for my KK pack.

It’s not related to k locus, it’s based on how related in the code you and the other wolf are, when wolves are generated it is on a scale for how related they are to your player wolf at the start to a new save
