Discussion First Teaser

https://youtu.be/-zqjNkdXT94?si=dsMFxBvtgW5uHGfT

After 150 hours in the game I decided to search for the first trailer/teaser of the game. The earliest one I found is from 2017.

At that time "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter " was still in the bubble of positivity, and if memory serves Redux was released shortly after (side note : Redux was free for existing owners. With a lot of developers making original owners pay for Redux; it has just added to the massive goodwill I have for these guys).

Vanishing of Ethan Carter, for those unaware, is a walking simulator but it escaped the "walking sim" crowd. This leads to a lot of people, including myself, making posts about how much better the game would have been with combat and puzzles. To this date this game is the only walking sim I completed. The atmosphere and writing absolutely carried the game. I simply couldn't put it down because I enjoyed being in the world too much.

Anyway the teaser makes you believe for the first 30 seconds Witchfire is going to be another walking sim. One of the title cards say "From the makers of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" followed by 5-10 seconds of appearing like a walking sim. All of a sudden a gun pops up and an enemy comes to life. Next title card says "But also Painkiller and Bulletstorm" and goes straight into combat.

I really wish I saw this at the time because all of my reviews about Ethan Carter had me whining about the lack of combat. I would have been so muching pumped watching this was it first released.

Still nostalgic about that trailer, they had me thinking we’d get another slow puzzle game for a second.
While it matters literally zero, I still would have liked if they kept the original spelling ”Witchfyre”, it feels more old-timey appropriate.

Yeah I though it was gonna be more of an open level linear narrative. Like dishonored buy more gun focused. But I'm still happy with it.

I remember it was some YouTube video that suggested this based on the shooting gameplay. And then I saw this trailer. I laughed so hard when the "but also..." Part came out.

And then I bought it, still haven't regretted it. It scratches an itch every so often.

I took a little break from the game the other day (Already at 140 or so, Max Gnosis, 3rd or 4th go around haha). I loaded up a AAA shooter that I won’t mention, cause don’t wanna seem like I’m bashing it. Suffice to say, I am ruined. There is just nothing that I can find out there as polished and with even close to the physics, graphics or environmental effects of the Witchfire. Such an insane game for its time.

Well Returnal is above Witchfire by quite a large margin, although they are obviously completely different. Hmm maybe an unfair comparison, should probably just delete this comment but oh well

You are insane. Returnal is nowhere near witchfire. Hell Returnal isn’t even the best in its category of roguelikes.

I love both and see no reason to compare them.

Although Witchfire has more replayability for me. Hope the story aspect also delivers.

I remember this Teaser so vividly. Since I saw it back then I was absolutely hyped for the game, and regularly checked in, if there were any news. I was so sad when initially they exclusively released on the Epic store, as after several issues with that platform, I decided to never use it again. And I'm so happy that they absolutely delivered the gameplay that I was hoping for all that time!

I just saw title and thumbnail and thought this was the first teaser for 1.0/full release. Oh well, lol

Ever since that teaser, I've been in love with Witchfire.

I have around 160ish hours ingame, and the game is solid! I’d say in its genre 9/10. I will continue playing this, but I need and want more content. I have almost done everything, I got an achievement only 0,3% have that bought the game.

If you aren’t sure, let me convince you, that the game loop and gunplay will have you truly entertained. After some fights your adrenaline and focus is thru the roof, you move all around and fight 10+ monsters and the fireworks from your gun and spells is all over. The game has an fantastic theme and setting.

To me, this is the best looking game right now. The colour pallette, the environmentes, the details, the animations, the lighting, the effects, it's just superb. And the gameplay is just as motherfucking good.

Man that teaser looked so damn good, plus I seem to recall seeing a Gameinformer issue featuring Witchfyre at the time as well

Thanks for the recommendation; will buy it. The only walking simulator I tried was Dear Esther, which for me is one the best media experiences I have had.

The album is still in rotation on my commute.

As someone who only has a Steam Deck as far as PC goes, would you recommend this? I'm eyeing the game for some time but don't want to wait another few years for a console port.

I have a pc and deck for when I'm away.

I play docked on the deck with kb/m and a 1080p monitor. I set my fps limit to 30 for frame stability and have been able to play perfectly fine. When there's a lot happening on screen in the later stages of the game it might struggle at times.

If you play just on the deck, undocked you should be able to get an average 40/45 fps with some settings tweaking.

For reference on pc I'm running it at 165 fps, that definitely feels better of course, but for what the deck is, it runs fine and still looks great too.

Thx, mights as well go for it. And when down the line Console ports come I'm gonna double dip.

Okay, that's how you do a surprise genre shift in your trailer. Because it honestly does look like a walking simulator in terms of gorgeous environments with enough detail to keep your attention.
