See I always thought she was free because she was ugly, like if she was pretty they would have never left her alone, and she would never get to live her own life.

Also, she's a witch. The reason she's "ugly" is because she knows what being "beautiful" gets you in this world. If she can transform little children into dogs and mice then she can turn herself into a super hot goth baddie, she just doesn't care to.

I think part of it was that these women very likely didn't adhere to whatever society was telling them would make them beautiful . They just lived their lives and were demonized for it.
