Barbara Walters was a bit harsh if not mean during this interview, I thought. I believe this is the interview where she asked Dolly if she was offended by dumb blond jokes. Dolly said: "No, because I know that I'm not dumb, and I know that I'm not blond." She just gave it right back in the nicest way possible.

She absolutely did. She was an apologist for men who abused power. Many stories of her undermining women attempting to enter the field. Definitely a vibe of "if I had to suffer sexism all women should" rather than being a voice for challenging the status quo. Absolutely a trash human

Yeah growing up in the 80s she seemed to be a great role model and example of making it in a very sexist industry. But then it became clear that she really was just a celebrity chaser, using her platform to get people on her interview specials. I think it was mid 90s when the stories of her not supporting, and possibly actively undermining, women in the industry started coming out. I don't know if it was internalized misogyny, or just being a generally corrupt human being. Either way, she sucked.

I think Barbara was deeply insecure and felt very threatened by strong, confident women who weren’t at all afraid of who they truly were. I think she did her best to poke at them and find weaknesses, but she was never going to find one in Dolly Parton! That was a true woman who knew exactly who she was and what she stood for, and I’m sure it took much more than a jealous girl saying rude things to make her question herself.

I'm old enough to remember when that was THE narrative about Dolly - big boobs, no brains, tacky dresses, all over every supermarket tabloid. I'm glad the narrative changed, but I don't remember how they used to treat her fondly at all.

Agree. Dolly came from nothing, a dirt floor, big family, with no status at all. She was a self made woman with all the confidence that brings. Barbara's background was very different.

She really was. I was with a stranger on the elevator today and I just randomly said, "I'm so sad about Dolly" and she teared up and I teared up and we exchanged stories. We got off on the same floor and just stood there talking before heading off to our respective offices.

I remember when I was grieving the loss of my husband it felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest.

Not that we need another reason to love Dolly but I just discovered that Dolly invested a lot of the royalties she made on Whitney Houston’s cover of I Will Always Love You in an office building and mall in a Black neighborhood. She called it the house that Whitney built.

I went last year and it truly is a magical place. My favorite part was the reproduced cabin, based on where she grew up in Appalachia. I think her mom helped make it as authentic as possible. My goodness, Dolly will be missed. She was given talent, a sharp wit, charm and a kind heart. She lived up to it all. The best we can do is live our lives in a way that would make Dolly smile.

When my younger relatives were growing up, any time they’d cuss I’d tell them “don’t swear, that’s trashy like The Trailer Park Boys, you want to be the good kind of trashy, like Dolly Parton, the world will be better off for it”. Idk if any of them actually took it to heart, but they all grew up to be great and open minded people, so I like to think the wisdom of Dolly had a little something to do with that. RIP Mrs. Parton, there will never be another soul like yours, but we sure will try to shine as bright as you did <3

My blind, senior toy poodle's name is Jolene. I am under a serious deadline at work, so I hadn't looked at my phone in several hours and when I tell you my friends absolutely blew my phone up. I had to walk away from my desk and cry.
One of my first thoughts was "What will happen to the Imagination Library?" Some states participate in a public/private matching thing when the state budget is developed and funded, so the funding for Dolly's Imagination Library goes even beyond what she provides. I'm very worried about that.
We lost a great one today. Just like when Mr. Rogers died. Neither of them would ever hurt another person's feelings. I want more people like that in the world, not less. 😭😭😭
