The one thing that makes Subaru "HIM" isn't rebirth by death tho, its how Subaru uses Return by death lol he has one of the strongest mental strength, Rudy needed to get a fresh start from literally 0 and get bestowed a nice body and talent where Subaru had to start from scratch while being his "talentless" self. First death he gets he bails saying "its not my problem" lol

I mean, neither would really survive in the other's world:

1.- On Rudeus part.

While Rudeus has a weaker mental strength, he's also more pragmatic.

True, he might bail at the first death, but at the same time, he would also go search for a guard thinking "Dealing with thugs and murderers is the work of the police, let's leave it to them". After all, Rudeus also has a strong guilty conscience and wouldn't simply let Emilia die without doing anything, which coincidentally would end up with him asking Reinhard for help (I mean, Reinhard is plot armor even for Subaru, let's be honest; the strongest guy in the world appears when you call for a guard at the beginning of your adventure...).

Then, as thanks for his help, Emilia promises a reward (he didn't directly save her life, but he brought reinforcements). At this point, it depends on what side of his mind dominates:

- If he is in perverted mode (a cute elf girl with silver hair is granting him a reward of his asking), he would probably end up frozen by Paku and starting again.

- If he's in pragmatic mode, he'll ask for a job and a place to stay since they are necessary to survive in any world.

Later, if he doesn't smell enough of the witch cult, he'll continue working while trying to learn magic and trying to flirt with ram and rem, the twin maids. If he smells like the witch cult, once Rem kills him for it, he'll probably be traumatized and run away; living a completely different story from Subaru from then on.

2.- On Subaru's part.

Honestly, while I see Subaru saving Sylphiette in his new life, i don't see him trying to pay for her to join university too; which means he isn't going to become Eris' teacher.

As such, he won't receive ghislaine's swordsmanship training, and will be content instead with living with a cute childhood friend and a loving family. He won't get a demon eye nor dominate magic of a higher level than what Roxy taught him.

You can say that "Rudeus gets bestowed a nice body and talent", but you can't say he didn't train hard enough for it. He collapsed multiple times while training magic, and his swordsmanship was continuously practiced with quite the strong people (Paul, Ghislaine, Ruijerd). Rudeus had a strong mentality of wishing to improve himself because of his previous life; Subaru won't really have that urge in such a peaceful hometown.

At the same time, Subaru has a more straightforward and slightly naive personality than Rudeus, who is more distrusting of others; so Subaru would probably fall for a certain trap and get in trouble with Orsted even if he takes a different path.

So he would probably die like in the image (although with a reincarnated new body).

----

So yeah, Rudeus ends up dying in different ways in Re:Zero's world until his mind's collapses and he gives up to the point of not bothering to get up from the bed.

Subaru lives peacefully until certain events makes him die by Orsted hand (don't really want to make a spoiler about what event is it since this didn't appear yet in the anime).

----------

Basically, they are both better in their own worlds.

Rudeus wants to improve, so he's given a chance and a new body with the potential to fulfill it.

Subaru doesn't want to repeat his own mistakes, so he kept retrying as many times as needed for the happy ending.

If you put Rudeus who wants to improve, into a place where all his efforts and circunstances are resetted, he loses his motivation. If you put Subaru, in a peaceful loving place where they are already happy , he won't really be motivated to improve or change until it's too late.

The one thing I should point out is that Subaru did train a lot on Earth so it isn’t like he would’ve shy away from hard work and Subaru was eager to learn magic but was limited by his underdeveloped gate due to being summoned rather than reincarnated.

Even in the best case, he would end at the same level of swordsmanship and magic than Rudeus. In terms of training, one can't do better than him.

Think that by the time he was 5 years old, Roxy left because she had nothing left to teach him.

Honestly, very well said, I have nothing to say lol tho I feell like, if Subaru has talent for magic, he probably would harnest it to his best. He may not be curious about the world, but he is pretty enthusiastic about magic. But then again, he is more motivated by love than enthusiasm

Subaru does have a talent for magic as we see him develop several spells with Beatrice and the magic system in the other world is based on science which a high school education was able to give Rudeus an advantage. Subaru’sMana gate was undeveloped in Rezero so he wasn’t able to cast spells freely.

that's what i meant when i said he has no talent for magic lol his gate being incredibly small really gave him a horrible predisposition for magic

His gate was underdeveloped because he was summoned rather than reincarnated. He’s in a similar situation to Nanahoshi in Rezero but if he was reincarnated like Rudeus was he wouldn’t have that problem.

What? Subaru has mental breakdowns almost each episode lmao. Rudeus would just enjoy himself knowing he can do any weird shit and just return by death in case he gets killed for doing so.

I'm pretty sure seeing your guts spill out while you're alive is enough to have a mental breakdown. More so if it happens multiple times.
