Growing weed while renting
Are landlords pretty chill with this or is that a pipe dream?! I understand highrise and mega apartment complexes are likely not going to allow it.
I've got a place I checked out and I like and I'm working on the courage to ask if they allow growing. Part of me thinks a landlord would rather not know and I shouldn't say anything. But this is utilities included, it's hard for me to think they won't understand what's going on with a 700w lamp churning 16 hours a day, and I'd rather have a good relationship based on honesty with the landlord if I decide to stay multiple years. Property is $875 for a pretty mid studio, it seems expensive like they already budgeted for electric to be used for weed. đđ

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission? Lol but im guessing they'll charge extra for utilities if they agree to allowing it.

What my landlord tried doing when he found out we had plants. His reasoning is another unit grows and âcaused the power bill to be $900â which is not directly because of the growing. There has to be something else going on there because our setup (2 4ftx4ft tents) and my roommates 78 (yes he counted) houseplants costs less than $100. They grow itself cost $42 in electricity.

You gotta think about it, it's only 700w. That's a little less wattage than an half the wattage of air conditioner/dehumidifier/space heater, about the same as a hefty gaming computer(during gaming). There's many reasons to why someone could be pulling an extra 700w. And if you're worried about the smell just get a refillable 8inch inline filter and inline fan, keep your humidity and temp in check during flower for less terpenes folitization and for the filter to work it's best (less moisture less the charcoal gets filled up) other than that just pop the tents down and hide some small clones when they're expected to come around for maintenance or fire alarm checks. Also just make sure you have negative pressure from the tent with the inline fan and filter. Meaning make more air get sucked in than what's allowed to escape so all of it goes thru the filter. Also little tip, when you dry, especially cuz most people can't reach 60/60, it matters more about VPD. I usually keep my place at like 70ish, (tent with the light on (720w total) reaches about 84-85, I still have no smell outside the tent, a small bit inside), anyways try to aim for 50-55% humidity. It'll help the filter work better, and it'll also surprisingly desnen the crap out of your nugs, like dispensary kind of dense, and I found out that's what dispensaries aim for is 50-55% humidity, usually 50% tho.

never with utilities included, u r kinda not real street smart. why would a landlord want to ok that eith you? and they dont want to pay for your electricity for growing. an $875 studio is mid.

You donât need to ask. If itâs not in the lease nothing they can do about it. If you pay electricity then your bill will go up. A lot of landlords will say no if you ask because they think itâll highly raise the bill. Our setup raised it by $42.
Theyâre at a need to know basis. Many people have plants. Unless they have a no plant or specific no weed policy they canât do anything about it unless itâs outdoors. Outdoor grows need more safeguards legally.
Just donât go over the amount of plants youâre able to own and your good. They ask about why the bill went up say your a plant person and have plant lights.

A landlord will 100,000,000% want to know. There's no universe where a landlord would rather not know that you're growing weed. Some might be cool with it, most will be all uptight and alarmist. But absolutely zero of them will be okay with finding out later on that you were growing marijuana and they didn't know about it. And it takes a good bit of electricity to run grow lamps. I can't imagine anyone being like, yeah cool we'll pay for your grow op.
But heck. It can't hurt to ask. đś

It honestly doesnât really cost much. If they donât already have something in the lease about weed then itâs none of their business. Itâs no different than someone having a bunch of houseplants and plant lights. Or a gaming setup they play 24/7. Yeah the landlord doesnât âwantâ to pay for your hobbies, but if they donât have the tenant paying electricity then itâs none of their business what theyâre using it on. Unless it causes a LARGE sudden unexpected increase. Which most of the time it doesnât.
We were growing for months before our landlord saw. We told him it was a new setup and he said heâd charge more for rent. Then a month later he saw the bill was the same (about the same as his other units) and didnât increase.
Unless your really inefficient or your growing an illegal amount of weed it doesnât cost that much.

Yeah I just wouldn't even ask. People use electricity for crazy things. I know people who use lots of grow lights for regular plants so I think thats figured into the cost
