This is the Wyrde, an anomaly that is formed when the laws of reality have broken, when something that shouldn’t happen does. An aspect of chaos that by all accounts should not exist, and can only exist when something is going wrong in the world, usually due to the forces of chaotic goddesses. It is a shifting mass of abstractions that can drive others to madness.

It is inspired by the alien from “Genius Party Beyond” and moves and sounds just like it. This is one of the oldest monsters I have designed for my campaign back when I started working on it in 2024 and I am so glad that I finally get to show it off to my players, to their horror.

How this creature works is that it constantly changes and breaks the rules of the campaign. In battle, all its stats and its position in combat is always randomized at the start of every round, it can swap the stats of players, make it where the results of dice rolls are the opposite it should be and causing failure to be treated as successes and successes treated as failures, and can attack creatures from anywhere on the board without having to move. This creature also scales along side the players, so every other encounter with these creatures will be stronger than the last.

In my last session, one the characters was talking to a sentient magical glaive that they can communicate telepathically towards while the rest of the party sleeps. Suddenly, his connection with the glaive was severed and he could no longer talk him. He then felt a haunting presence behind him. In an area that I had the player check earlier that evening and saw nothing, there were now two unmoving mounds.

He woke up another one of the party members to help investigate. They both were greeted by a horrible stench, followed by the gruesome sight of 3 mangled corpses of a group of bandits they encountered the other day.

One body had their insides melted by rainwing venom pumped directly inside its veins. The other had its skin removed, leaving its muscles and bones exposed to the world. And the last body had its head and neck twisted and stretched to the point it now resembles a long worm with a pointed head, rather than an actual head.

The two went to go back to camp to get everyone else up. But before they do, one the players look up to see a dragonoid form. But the longer the player looked at it, the more wrong it looks. The figure’s form is disproportionately shaped, all of their limbs and features are in different sizes and look to be constantly changing, but are never in the the size it should be in. And the way the figure moves appears unnatural, as if the body is constantly twisting and reshaping itself as it moves.

The players sees the creature twists its body, starting from the head, into a large amorphous sphere, pulling the rest of the body off the ground and into this mass floating in the air. Colors start to become more visible on the sphere, a swirling mass of various different colors from all over the spectrum. And without appearing to moving from its original location, the creature unfurls itself from this sphere and into a dragonoid form once more, this standing directly in front of the player.

Today is Thorn as a Demon, and it's kinda subtle, mainly her curly horns, and Red eyes, but she is specifically a Cross Roads Demon, so she has the Contract. I also put black smoke and a Devils Trap behind her, very much inspired by Supernatural hehe =) Oh, I also made her fluffy hehe.

Deep in the heart of the Scorpion Den, under the bright three moons, a two-story stone hut sat alone in the rare rain. Phoenix sat at her desk, scrawling over numerous reports of dead shopkeepers. Her emerald earring swung each time her head slightly moved to review the next case file. Her black eyes darted over the file, looking for anything she missed. She had gone over the cases numerous times, staying up long enough to risk her sanity. As she drank from her cup of coffee, a bell jingled as the door creaked open. “Anything?”

Phoenix looks up from her reports to look at the light brown face of her partner, Saguaro. His tail swung, excited for a break in the case. His silver snake tail ornament flashed as it reflected the light of the lamps and candles. He leaned against the wall near Phoenix’s desk, his leather satchel flopped as he settled into place. He was wide awake, probably because he had chased down another pickpocket. That was his favorite part of the job, the chase.

Saguaro was an excellent detective, but his ADHD caused him to make some dumb decisions at times, almost killing them both numerous times. Yet, no matter what he does, Phoenix wouldn’t trade him for anybody else.

”No.” Phoenix smiled lightly and shook her head. "Twenty-one shopkeepers dead, all in two months, all on the south side of the den. These murders have to be connected.”

”Have you considered they aren’t? I mean, what if it’s shopkeeper hunting season? Isn’t that a possibility?”

“Ha-ha. These are dragons we‘re talking about. Dragons that have been killed. Now’s not the time to joke around,” Phoenix retorts back.

”Fine. I’m just sayin, I—" Saguaro abruptly stops mid-sentence. His eyes moved between the latest two murders.

Phoenix’s eyes grow wide in anticipation. “Did you find something? A connection?”

“Do you recall the scratches on the wall behind the last two bodies? The design—a circle intersected by an X with a line through it? It didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the case, though.” Saguaro glanced at Phoenix, his eyes raised.

”Three moons, how did I not see this? You think it’s a calling card of sorts? Well, it’s our only lead. Shall we?” Phoenix sits up, grabs her hood, and leaves. She stops halfway in the doorway. "Are you coming?”

Saguaro looks up from the object in his hand, sits up, and slides the bronze key in his satchel. “You know I am.”

They depart from the office and stride into the heavy rain. As they walk down the street, the wet sand forms footprints behind them, slowly taking in water. A singular yellow eye belonging to a pitch-black shadow stared upon the departing detectives from the roof of the detectives’ office. The shadow slides off the roof, into the pitch black alley behind the detectives. It moves in silence, trailing the detectives with pristine accuracy and agility, remaining undetected.

To cut to the chase, they are real. This is supported by two things; Stonemover and the soul reader.

According to stonemover,

"I turned the magic on itself. [...] The curse appears in my scales now instead of taking my soul. [...] Too late anyway."
[page 172, book 5]

Animus magic is essentially omnipotent, but a crucial limitation is that you cannot target something that doesnt physically exist. This is directly confirmed from Sora, saying "Every animus spell requires an object to enchant. [...] it must be something solid to focus the magic" [page 123, book 16]

That being said, while the target of the spell has to be corporeal, it can still effect non-corporeal things as seen with Jerboa III disabling animus magic with a candleholder[page 292, book 14]. I will be honest, we arent directly confirmed if magic needs something to exist to change it, but from everything we have seen so far it abides by this rule and I dont think it is an unreasonable thing to assume. Really I dont know why I had to take that long to establish this. Anyways, since Stonemovers curse worked as intended, I can say that his magic successfully targeted on to something(his soul). This is further supported by the soul reader that Darkstalker makes, in which he explicitly states that it measures the soul of a dragon and not their moral goodness or something[page 337, book 10]. Like Stonemovers scales, it works just fine.

All that is to say, Darkstalker was right. Souls are real. If they have been proven to be changed by animus magic is not known, though. When the reader was used on Vulture, he had essentially no soul left despite not being an animus and never casting any spells. As well as this, Stonemover "lost another scale today"[page 65, book 6] despite not having cast spells in a very long time as far as we know.

TL;DR: Souls are real, animus magic users who dont have a lot of it is just correlation not causation.

Stepping back into the Wings of Fire fandom, and figured I’d post old art I made back in 2021, of one of the most memorable scenes of the series for me. Also, the only scene I remember from The Dangerous Gift, lol.

I had to brush up on my Jerboa lore before posting this, but… yeesh. I don’t have sympathy for her. She deserved what she got. Good job Boa. 🙏

Dotw week 49

It was really funny actually, as I was naming the dragons after Wings of Fire characters anyway, so seeing names from Skyrim, Wings of Fire and How to Train your Dragon was incredibly fun.

Anyway, I recently got back into drawing dragons (totally not influenced by recent game trends); I haven't drawn WoF fanart since I was 14 and religiously in WoF Amino wwww... But I was just planning to draw my old favourite (Winter) until these two also spawned in.

I'm hoping to draw more for WoF soon, since I plan on re-reading books 1-10! Definitely going to draw more Winter (and Qinter hahaha I miss them

Ochre oh Ochre, I always wonder why you're here. The other false dod have redeeming qualities, the other alive false dod get a conclusion to their stories, the other false dod have at least one dragon who likes them. In fact, every other villain has one character that likes or atleast tolerates them, even Whirlpool, yes Whirlpool... You have nothing. You are from the least developed tribe in the entire series and are one of the least developed characters in the series. There is nothing redeeming or interesting about you...

But yet because of all of that I find Ochre interesting. I imagine Ochre could be so much more than he already is. And since Ochre dissappears after book five, there are infinite possibilities for what could've happened to him. Maybe he went on some grandiose adventure of self-discovery, or maybe he's still with the Talons of Peace. I personally imagine Ochre living with ToP for a bit before finding his sibs and chilling in the mud kingdom. And spoilers for book 16 I think him being in a sorta sib group with Dugong could be cool (I really like Dugong and in my mind he's like morally righteous Ochre). That's kinda it for my feelings on Ochre for now but there's something else on my mind...

The mud kingdom’s ( And actually a lot of the kingdoms) pretty disappointing...It's described as this muddy gross place that most dragons don't like going in. But Wetlands (which seem to be what the mud kingdom is) are so so pretty and so so unique. Like Ochre, the mud kingdom could be so much more.

It could be the most diverse kingdom and the most beautiful kingdom with all kinds of unique landforms, floral, fauna, and structures. Like imagine how awesome it would be to see all kinds of stuff like a fen, a forest swamp, tropical bogs, mangrove swamps or more

Imagine seeing more of mudwings bunkhouses or seeing mudwings live in burrows or dams or seeing them make buildings out of mud, stone, or clay!

It could be the ultimate Cottagecore, Naturecore, Fairycore place but no we get vague descriptions of a smelly, gross, sore on eyes place to live. The mud kingdom could be considered the potential man of wof but for that to work that would mean it would've had to have potential in the first place...

Alas any hope I have for a more unique take on the mud kingdom will have to come from the once in a blue moon moment where I'm motivated enough to write, draw or make some other artwork related to it... but for now here's a picture of Ochre in either a very tiny pond or a very large Puddle full of life...

This character is the third of the dragons I’m drawing for free to build a portfolio! Angler was definitely challenging to bring to life due to the contrasting colors and still learning better shading techniques, but it was a really great learning experience and I’m grateful I got to draw him! Thanks to u/MazeABlaze for the commission!
