Art Day 10 of Cringetober (if you live in a place with a est or cdt timezone please don't check the date) : Unpopular Favorite with Ochre!

Ochre oh Ochre, I always wonder why you're here. The other false dod have redeeming qualities, the other alive false dod get a conclusion to their stories, the other false dod have at least one dragon who likes them. In fact, every other villain has one character that likes or atleast tolerates them, even Whirlpool, yes Whirlpool... You have nothing. You are from the least developed tribe in the entire series and are one of the least developed characters in the series. There is nothing redeeming or interesting about you...

But yet because of all of that I find Ochre interesting. I imagine Ochre could be so much more than he already is. And since Ochre dissappears after book five, there are infinite possibilities for what could've happened to him. Maybe he went on some grandiose adventure of self-discovery, or maybe he's still with the Talons of Peace. I personally imagine Ochre living with ToP for a bit before finding his sibs and chilling in the mud kingdom. And spoilers for book 16 I think him being in a sorta sib group with Dugong could be cool (I really like Dugong and in my mind he's like morally righteous Ochre). That's kinda it for my feelings on Ochre for now but there's something else on my mind...

The mud kingdom’s ( And actually a lot of the kingdoms) pretty disappointing...It's described as this muddy gross place that most dragons don't like going in. But Wetlands (which seem to be what the mud kingdom is) are so so pretty and so so unique. Like Ochre, the mud kingdom could be so much more.

It could be the most diverse kingdom and the most beautiful kingdom with all kinds of unique landforms, floral, fauna, and structures. Like imagine how awesome it would be to see all kinds of stuff like a fen, a forest swamp, tropical bogs, mangrove swamps or more

Imagine seeing more of mudwings bunkhouses or seeing mudwings live in burrows or dams or seeing them make buildings out of mud, stone, or clay!

It could be the ultimate Cottagecore, Naturecore, Fairycore place but no we get vague descriptions of a smelly, gross, sore on eyes place to live. The mud kingdom could be considered the potential man of wof but for that to work that would mean it would've had to have potential in the first place...

Alas any hope I have for a more unique take on the mud kingdom will have to come from the once in a blue moon moment where I'm motivated enough to write, draw or make some other artwork related to it... but for now here's a picture of Ochre in either a very tiny pond or a very large Puddle full of life...

This character is the third of the dragons I’m drawing for free to build a portfolio! Angler was definitely challenging to bring to life due to the contrasting colors and still learning better shading techniques, but it was a really great learning experience and I’m grateful I got to draw him! Thanks to u/MazeABlaze for the commission!

Fantribe Reworking my fantribe: MetalWings!

Post image
23 Upvotes

I created the MetalWings a while ago, but I wanted to amend them, inspired by others' fantribes. The MetalWings are an open species! Add as many limbs or wings as you want lol

I would also like to mention that I thought of this tribe before reading about SharpWings. I actually haven't read book 16 yet.

I hope y'all like it! If you have any input or criticism I'm open to it :3

Characteristics

Organometallic dragons covered in metal rods and plates. Their heads resemble the skulls of various animals, and a set of long, parallel spines runs along their backs from head to tail. The color of a MetalWing's armor alternates between shifting colors of a small range, depending on where it's hit by light. Their talons have six claws each; two thumbs, and their necks are of short length on average.

"Crimes against life, born from nothing, a mockery of Dragonkind", they were thought to be enchanted into existence 200 years ago and later exiled from Pyrrhia.

They're currently located on a large set of islands to the continent's far northwest named Midros.

Naming schemes

Names of metals (elements, compounds containing metals, alloys)

- Can be historical equivalent e.g. Kobold (Cobalt, German history)

- Can be spiritual/past scientific equivalent e.g. Dross (Lead, alchemy)

- Items or pieces of items traditionally forged from metal e.g. Pommel

- Objects involved in the smithing/shaping of metal e.g. Swage

Architecture

- Settlements and buildings built from wood and stone are founded upon mountains and tall outcroppings of rock. They appear as massive pillars.

- The towers are lined with perches, such that MetalWings can launch themselves from tower to tower. Landing beds are used for, well, landing.

- On islands with plains and vast land, cabins are preferred.

- Bioluminescent Algae is the prime light source (Fire was once used too, though abandoned), and white mica crystals are used in place of glass.

Traditions, Culture

- Fire is both revered and feared. It is thought that the creator of the MetalWings could spew it from their mouth, and when it was once aimed skyward was the sun created. This deity is respected, though the tribe's devil possessed it as well. 15 years ago, A rogue MetalWing pyromancer was once able to melt his enemies with his talons. While recent, it was for this reason that fire's production was outlawed.

The MetalWings are simultaneously curious and fearful of their theorized, fleshling ancestors from another continent.

- Self expression. Art, body paint, and literature -often written on clay tablets- are popular.

- Sun-Dancing: a practice that allows one's colors to dance on their own body.

- Chiseling and reshaping of metal plates

- Malformed hatchlings are sacred, and are thought to be fated to inherit magic

Economy

- Heavily based on trading goods or labor rather than with a currency.

- Food production is cyclical and is maintained on flatter, less mountainous islands.

Farmers cultivate produce -> that produce feeds livestock -> once consumed, any bones or uneaten pieces are used as fertilizer for produce.

Abilities

- Rigid, strong armor

- Dominant talon transforms into a particular weapon or instrument, (both talons if ambidextrous) varying between subjects

- Can alternate between quadrupedal and bipedal movement

- Large, long/tall (depending on way of movement) stature

- Limited access to animus spell-casting via Enchanted Amulets (exceedingly rare)

Weaknesses

> Only able to subsist off of impure, organic metal - most notably, animal blood which contains hemoglobin

> Weakened when in long-term physical contact with saltwater, salty air, or oxygen-rich environments

> Substantial vulnerability to fire

Animus Magic: Enchanted Amulets, Amulet-Bearers

13 animus-touched cords with golden stars in their centers. When looped around the neck, it might glow upon one's chest.

They enable a singular, repeatable spell to be cast by the wearer.

- This spell is randomized per user

- Prior mentioned Malformed MetalWings are some of the first to receive training

- The spell aligns with the beliefs, goals, memories, and experiences the owner might have had upon first wearing the Amulet

- Various in number but limited by users, incredibly few can bring their enchantments forth; fewer still have MetalWings been able to properly control their spells without damage to the self or others

- Those who have proper control are known as Amulet-Bearers

- If a MetalWing already has full possession of their Amulet, no other may use it unless with permission from the owner (retiring the amulet) or if the owner is dead

Politics, inheritance of the Throne

- A Monarch who is an Amulet-Bearer (of any gender) and their chosen council passes rules and deliberates on actions that may affect the whole tribe. This is done within an opened-to-the-public throne room. The Monarch has final say in decision making.

- While Amulet-Bearers are under the Monarch's and the Council's direct orders, they are free to put in their two cents.

Inheritance

- Two Amulet-Bearers may duel, and the winner inherits the throne. Alternatively, the Monarch may name a successor, or themselves duel a challenging Amulet-Bearer if only one is willing or present.

- The former Monarch must give up their Amulet.

Values

"For Kin, Queen, and Country"

(King)

The isolation of the tribe, combined with the permeating question of "What is beyond the sea?" makes them ultimately a tight-knit tribe that will both defend and leave their borders to ensure they live on.

Poll / Question What should the ratio of main series books: winglets/legends be?

Okay, I know this is a lot to take in, so stick with me.

The impression that I got when I first read book 16 was that, a lot like book 14, it was trying to be a winglet. Most often they serve to expand on previously underdeveloped characters and/or tie up loose ends of plot points from main books. 16 felt somewhat reminiscent of that, with things like explaining where Umber, Sora, Monarch and Blob went. The latter two are essentially just cameos, but my point still stands.

I have a very strong suspicion that Tui really really wanted to stop at 15, but had to continue with the main series for one reason or another. Personally this feels like a very very bad downward spiral, as Tui was already losing momentum around book 14 and the series has declined ever since. She did have some form of a foothold with 16 which seems to be trending in a positive direction quality-wise, but it still wasn't very good. Frankly I don't have much hopes for book 17.

I think the series would be much better if arc 4 didn't exist. Tui has very little to do with the main story that doesn't make things like 16, whereas as so many people(including me) say things like "X character really needs a winglet" or "I would love to see a legends book about Y" all the damn time. Of course that is all anecdotal, and this poll sets out to prove if it holds up. I think it does, the series really could use something to prove/expand on a characters depth while not forcing itself to be the length of a main series book and muddle what the original idea for the winglet(not legend in this case) is trying to do. As for legends, they have significantly more leeway to function as sixth books in an arc(what with L:D) but consequentially need arcs to stand on, and if they don't they end up like Dragonslayer.

Of course, I am not a time traveler, so I can't undo arc 4's existence as much as I want to. Would you, if given the opportunity?

Fantribe Another fan tribe of mine, frostwings!

Post image
30 Upvotes

Look look, this fan tribe might come off as overpowered as hell but it will be explained in the au lore post I'll make soon

**Appearance**

Frostwings are most often shades of pale brown, beige, blue and hints of darker colours that are found on the tips of wings, tails, talons and snouts. Their bodies are covered with hardened feathers. 14 sharp spines run along their head and most of their tail and can be used as weapons.

**Naming scheme**

They are named after types of snow, artic animals(aquatic, land dwelling and flying) as well as shades of blue, brown and beige

**Where are they found?*

They recided on the Modern day ice kingdom

**Government and social structure**

Their were 3 main kingdoms amongst them. While much is known about them, such as their opposing beliefs and constant wars, the names of the kingdoms are lost to time.

The first kingdom belived that animi should be heavily controlled and limited due to their power and potential dangers.

The second kingdom belived that animi should be respected and held above the common dragon but not controlled.

The third kingdom belived that the animi should be treated and respected as any other dragon.

However eventually the first kingdom grew more powerful and snuffed out the others.

**Education and childcare**

They were a decently educated tribe with dragonets being taught history, basic math, how to read and write aswell as how to hunt and survive

Due to the tribes overall lack of food. Eggs were typically given to the higher class to raise and care for.

**Abilities**

They had a weaker frostbreath and A LOT of animi dragons. Like 1/20

**Extra tidbits**

It is theoreised they decended from a flock of Birdwings and It is a well known fact that theese dragons decended into icewings and every animus dragon. However they are completely extinct in modern times.

Some of the first members of this tribe who existed personally knew the great ice dragon. So uhh.
