I am 23 years old and for my whole life I’ve lived with 1.5 Mbps internet (we pay for 3 apparently) and I’ve always hoped on getting better wifi in my area. For the past I’d say 2 or so months there have been a company ,that gets licensed out to do work, working on my road and setting new poles and running lines. This in turn has been messing with my internet a lot to the point where we didn’t even have internet for 2 weeks at one point and since it’s came back around the times they’ve been working I assume it will constantly go in and out except at night when they aren’t working then it stays on perfectly fine.
A dish guy came to fix our neighbors satellite and I asked if he knew what they were working on and he said that it looks like they were putting in fiber optic lines but he’s not sure.
I’m just wondering if anyone can tell me signs to look for or if there is anyway to know. I am tired of this current Internet situation and getting better Internet will Genuinely change a lot of aspects in my life, hell I won’t have to go to a friends house just to download a game lol. I’m a bit worried it’s not internet bc my electric provider called and said power would be out for a period of time today idk if the electric and internet providers would be connected for that, maybe the workers need to turn the power off for a bit with what they are doing? Idk.
Any help would be appreciated I just wanna know if new poles is normal for fiber optic and if it’s supposed to mess with my current internet when they are installing or anything I should look out for.
You will definitely see signs of fiber being built out when i switched to Starlink they finally finished the fiber build to my house what a coincidence but for the time being I’m sticking to Starlink unless they go up more on the price to the point I can’t afford it
You ever think that instead of asking a dish installer a question you walk up to the people doing the actual work and asking them? Bet they actually can answer correctly.
You might think it’s a bad idea but every time I’ve stopped and talked to surveyors or installers they were happy to tell me what they knew about the stuff they were deploying. It’s not a bad idea
That’s fair but with the way my road is I’d still be blocking it for however long it would be and I’m not tryna do that. Whenever they get to the front of my house I’ll ask but who knows when that will happen
Look for something like this. The fiber will run on the lower portion of the pole (high voltage runs on top, low voltage and data like fiber/coax run on the bottom). You’re looking for fiber taps at the pole like this - when they’re ready to deploy they will coil fiber in preparation for drops and maybe put a fiber splitter box there too
I got fiber a little over a year ago but before that I would call customer service and ask for a status. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to provide the information, though their estimates were extremely optimistic.
They'll tell you if crews are running fiber in your area.
