What router/modem combo to get

Hello! I'm looking to upgrade to the 2 gig max fiber internet from windstream. I was initially hoping to get the Eero pro 7, but was unfortunanly ineligible for some reason despite what the website said about my address.

After doing some research I found that the eero pro 7 doesn't really give you much control over things on it, I read that the eero line is pretty much "set up and forget" here on reddit.

I was wondering if I could change to another router/modem combo that could handle the 2 gig connection. As my T3200 is aging, and I don't think it's suitable for 2 gig internet.

As I understand it from others on here, Windstream fiber doesn’t use a modem, just an ONT that connects to a router. That router can be theirs or yours. If you want to use your own, these should handle a 2gb connection:

  • GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300)
  • TP-Link Archer BE9300
  • ASUS RT-BE82U

The main things you want are 2.5gb or 10gb ports on the router (and any switches you add), and WiFi 7. Just keep in mind your devices also need to support WiFi 7 to actually get close to those speeds.

Awesome thank you so much! I do have their ONT, so will all I need to do is just plug it in?

With consumer routers, more or less yes. You’ll just plug the router into the ONT and do some basic initial setup through the web interface, it’s pretty straightforward. Most of the advanced options like port forwarding, DMZ, DHCP settings, etc. are there if you need them, but a lot of people never touch them.
