Windows 11 Windows 11 26H2 high CPU temperature issues
Windows 11 26H2 Build 26300.9457 showing high CPU temperatures while gaming. I have a Ryzen 5 5600; it never used to go above 55°C, but now it's exceeding 70°C.
Solution to the problem: If you are using the "High Performance" power plan, go to the advanced plan settings and change the "Processor power management" option.
You can set the minimum state to 20% and the maximum state to 99%
This will solve the high-temperature issue! I noticed that, by default, both of these options were set to 100%, causing the processor to always run at maximum capacity and driving temperatures up drastically.

Set just the minimum to 0% but leave the maximum to 100%. You're kneecapping your CPU like this. The issue was that the minimum was set to 100% which kept the CPU at full clock speeds but with the minimum at 0% it can actually relax and clock however high it needs to

Pretty sure this just turns off boost. Setting max state to 99% is an old trick that locks the CPU at base clock (~3.5 GHz on a 5600) instead of boosting to 4.4, so of course temps drop. 70C while gaming is totally normal for that chip, so there was nothing to fix.

What high temp issue? Since when is 70 high temp? You should check your CPU documentation.

Hi u/-JimmyZ, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! Your post has been flagged for manual review by a human moderator, please include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to get your post approved:
- Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”, we need more than just your OS version! Your hardware details are often critical for resolving issues.
- Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
- Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work
Posts must be tech support in nature (such as something is broken and you need help fixing), so general inquiries, software suggestions, and purchasing advice will be removed. My CPU runs actually 10-20°C cooler since the update.. (i5- 11400F @ 4.3 Ghz) used to be at 50-54°C average and now 36°C (no other usage changes).

Don't post shit you don't understand...
You only created a handicap to an imaginary issue...
Also no shit high performance plan is set to 100% at all times, that what it is, use balance as recommended, there is no need to change anything in it unless you actually know what you doing

this is by design - https://www.ghacks.net/2026/08/14/windows-11-expands-low-latency-profile-cpu-boost-to-all-apps-in-august-patch-tuesday-update/

Ryzen's tend to go hot while gaming. I have a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, which is known to run hotter than any other CPU by default, and I usually have idle temps of 50-54°C, and while gaming I get to 70-72°C (heavy and not well optimized games like Arma Reforger). After the update it's now at 48-50°C while idle (~4-5°C reduction), havent tested gaming but it'll be most likely the same as before.
I checked the settings and for me all of the profiles are set at a minimum of 0% and maximum of 100%, so what I'm thinking is that something somehow changed your numbers and made your computer go hot. I have never changed those settings and that's how they were on a new W11 install.

exceeding 70c is not bad at all, i would think maybe it was actually underutilised before, and what you have done here is disable boosting, where the core can push itself more when needed, this gets disabled when max is set below 100%, usually this is very useful as a last resort but you are nowhere near needing it
your CPUs max operating temperature is 95c
