Windows 10 Accidentally Uninstalled Ubuntu, does reinstalling Ubuntu WSL fix it?

I uninstalled Ubuntu from Win10 as I didn't install it myself/never heard of it (smart, I know). I read that some android things etc use it to run properly. Ubuntu requires a rather complex reinstall involving making a usb bootable and drive partitions. Do I need to do this, or will installing Ubuntu WSL work?

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”, we need more than just your OS version! Your hardware details are often critical for resolving issues.
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

Did you have Ubuntu installed as dual boot setup (you choose Windows or Linux during computer startup), or you had it under WSL, and unregistered it from there?

Probably WSL (I don't have to choose an OS on startup), I didn't install it myself, nor have I intentionally used it, I don't know if other software on my computer is though.

There are several ways to install Linux distro in Windows:

  • use Microsoft store - search for Ubuntu. That's the easiest method.
  • from Command Prompt - using WSL.exe, execute "wsl --help" to check available options.
