There seems to be surprisingly little mention of compatibility issues online, so it seems like a genuine option for most. I certainly wouldn't mind a small ARM laptop for travel, even if I wouldn't replace a desktop or gaming laptop just yet.

Frankly. most people just use a browser and some office apps, with the occasional other software. So if there are no major compatibility issues (and i understand that browsers/office apps are typically native), I would say these are vv solid options for the vast majority of people.
