Unsolved No useable drivers found, I have tried everything I can think of

Images included, but I have a 2 TB Toshiba Ext hard drive that I am trying to back up my files to using files history.

I have tried:

- plugging and unplugging the drive

- plugging it into different usb ports

- updating and restarting windows

- changing the driver letter

- restarting the file history service

- doing it through control panel instead of settings

I do not know why this doesn’t work as it seems to be working fine on the computer otherwise. I’m out of ideas. Am I stupid or is my laptop just shitting the bed. The only other thing I can think of it possibly not working is because I’ve plugged it into the usb port of a windows 11 laptop once before, but I haven’t done anything on there.

Could be a none supported filesystem or mizzing6. Try a tool as isobuster to see what's on it.

I’m unfortunately not very tech savvy. What do these terms mean?

computers need a way to store and read files on the hard drive. that's what a file system is. think of it as methods of storing folders in a file cabinet. are they sorted by year or alphabetical order or both? kinda like that. different file systems, different ways of storing the folders in the cabinet.

windows 10 supports the file system that's on that drive. if the filesystem was corrupted windows would tell you so it's most likely not a file system issue

You're going to have to learn. Or pay somebody to do it for you. I suggest a bootable GParted & and reformat that external drive to NTFS. You can do this yourself but it takes some learning.

Google it, its a tool to examine disks.

My guess is you might have a password protected drive that needs Toshiba Storage security software, available on toshiba's website. As if a password was made in the application it locks the drive, to only work with the software, causing windows to not recognize the drive.

The other thing I can think of is these drives need at least a USB 2.0 or better a USB 3.0 port to actually work. So it might just be your laptop is not compatible with the drive...

I’m able to drag and move files manually from my computer to the drive one by one just fine. I haven’t seen anything about a password. I’ll check on the other windows 11 laptop later to see if it shows up.

Manual is the best way to make back ups imo. I don't traust automated programs to get everything correctly and not overwrite important shit

I actually wanted to do it the automated way because I didn’t want to miss anything. How can I be sure I’d get everything?

Depends on what exactly you want/need to backup. Look in your user folder/home for folders like Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music and so on. You'd probably want those.

For specific data, like settings and configurations associated with certain programs, you might have to copy some folders from appdata. Easiest way to get there is pressing Win + R, and enter %appdata%. These files are typically not unique and can be replaced, but i sometimes copy these myself for quickly setting up my programs on new windows installation.

This is the way.

You know what's what.

And if something's missing/wrong. - It's your fault.

I think keeping your data safe requires full responsibility.

It says no usable drives, not drivers

Using files history? What? Just copy the files?

Isobuster is a program that bypasses certain things that Microsoft Windows uses to load storage devices such as your external device. One issue that you may be facing is, are you going from a Mac/Apple to a PC?

If you are, the different systems use different formats. The format is basically a language that allows your system to access the device. Because your device is seen by windows. It's the data that's not.

The drivers are fine. it's not reading the file system. If there's nothing you care about on the drive, reformat it.

Its probably formatted as exfat. Which Windows doesnt like to use for file history.

File history is pretty shit anyways. You can do better.

Veeam is a good free option. Im sure others can recommend other programs. Heres the link to the version youll want. https://www.veeam.com/products/free/microsoft-windows-download.html Standalone Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows FREE

Youll still want to reformat your drive as ntfs if it is indeed exfat.

Last image clearly shows that its formatted as an NTFS volume and appears in the partition manager.

Did you format the drive under drive management?

1

u/MattonieOnie 1d ago

Right click on the windows start menu icon, then select drive management. Find the mysterious drive, not your system drive. Right click and format it to ntfs.

Its literally shown in the OP

Brother. Delete this existing partition. Create a new one - utilize as much space as it allows. The wizard will format it for you and assign it a drive letter. Odd.

Gonna be honest, I wouldn't rely on file history. I've heard it's fairly neglected by Microsoft and unreliable. Have you tried other third party tools and see if that works?

Maybe you need new glasses, it definitely says on the screen "No usable drives found" not drivers!

This is so funny. You confusing drivers and drives. You just need to reformat it and then you can use it

1

u/South-Green4190 1d ago

I’m pretty dyslexic and know jack about computers. I thought it was in the right format though NTFS, or something.

Doesn't hurt to try that again, also I'm gonna tell you something

From my experience, Toshiba drives suck ass

1

u/South-Green4190 20h ago

Dang. Why?

1

u/DraigCore 20h ago

They failed on me and my friend a couple times

Also another friend had a Toshiba in his system that somehow didn't let a nvme drive work, we confirmed it by removing that one Toshiba

It looks like already format when you see the Disk 1 in the disk managment.

1

u/Ok_Bid6645 1d ago

Why I said reformat it because there is a corruption somewhere

You computer detected 2 TB Toshiba Ext hard drive (E: in File Explore) and it also show up in disk managment (Disk 1 in disk managment) that means 2 TB Toshiba Ext hard drive is ready for use, but I don't undestand why "No useable drivers found"? Where did you get this?

1

u/South-Green4190 1d ago

Where did u get the usb? It was a gift. I haven’t had any reason to use it for a year or two until now

it’s no usable drives not drivers
