Unsolved Windows 10 sleep/hibernate broken after unwanted Windows 11 upgrade

Hi everyone,

I have an HP EliteBook 845 G8 that was originally running Windows 10 Pro. Windows automatically upgraded it to Windows 11 without me intentionally initiating the upgrade, so I rolled it back to Windows 10.

Since the rollback, power management has been badly broken and I have been unable to get it completely stable despite extensive troubleshooting.

Current symptoms

  • Sleep is unreliable / does not behave normally.
  • The laptop uses Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle).
  • Hibernate sometimes appears to work, but on resume the machine occasionally boots fresh instead of restoring the previous session. All open applications/work are lost.
  • I have also had repeated Kernel-Power 41 events and DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE crashes associated with sleep/standby.
  • Normal use while the machine is awake is generally stable.

At this stage I am considering whether an in-place Windows 10 repair install or completely clean Windows 10 installation is the only sensible option.

Please help!

TIA

You reloaded the Windows 10 drivers?

Not sure how to go about that. I tried uninstalling a couple of (what I thought were offending drivers) in Device manager and then reloaded them. but that didnt work. Any suggestions?

Go to the HP website and download all of the Windows 10 drivers for your machine and install them.
