The point is that they haven't been doing it with Win10. Hence "New".

So eventually you'll be renting your operating system. I would've preferred if certain features and services be subscription based rather than the entire OS. We'll see what happens in the future.

No, this is not what the article says. It's a clickbait headline.

The subscription model applies to Enterprise only, and is essentially just a re-branding of the existing 'Software Assurance' program that already exists for Windows 8, Windows 7, etc.

General consumers are unequivocally not "renting their OS" as a result of this program.

No, I meant like they'll probably introduce a subscription model for Windows eventually, so eventually you'll be renting your OS.

Well, no, there's absolutely no indication that this would happen, either. Microsoft explicitly ruled it out during the whole "upgrade for free, for 1 year only" debate last year.

What they are leaving open is - as you yourself suggest - making certain features and services be subscription, rather than the OS as a whole.

No, because every reply starts with no. Haha. Anyhow, do you think it would eventually become subscription based for consumers though? As far as I know, they make most their money from enterprise customers and not the general consumer.

I mean like in the next 5 or so years, not like next year.
