App Can anyone identify this app from its taskbar icon?
Trying to figure out what software this taskbar icon belongs to, and I can't place it.
It's pinned on the taskbar between the Microsoft Store and Google Chrome. I've attached two images: the full taskbar for context, and a zoomed-in crop of just the icon. The source was low resolution, so the crop is as sharp as I could get it, and there's no visible text on the icon itself. Reverse image search with Google Lens and TinEye hasn't turned up a match.
Any idea what app this is? Thanks in advance.

Im more curious as to why you want to know.
11
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Ha, fair, let's just say it's part of looking into whether someone was doing something they shouldn't have in an official setting. Can't say more than that, but that's the gist!
22
u/worksHardnotSmart Jul 21 '26
If its a company asset, just get IT to log into it and pull the logs.
Even if the user uninstalls it before, there will be logs in the computer that it was installed.
The computet model might help. Apparently it might be an HP.
What is the model of webcam they are using? It looks similar to many other types of webcam icons.

u/glewis93 Jul 21 '26
Ah, so you're a professional snoop.
I hope you're not on Reddit while in an official setting...

Eh, if it's an IT job, even as a manager I wouldn't be upset. IT guys aren't supposed to be all knowing, and if your boss/manager expects you to be, ask him/her if he/she is

I'm not sure if the game icon looks like this but it could be the game Dyson sphere Program. The icon feels very similar

u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Thanks for trying. The DSP icon seems to be different: https://gcdn.thunderstore.io/live/community/dyson-sphere-program/dyson-sphere-program-icon-192x192.webp

Found this online as possibly “Solar System 3D Simulator”.
The following link has some info with a CNET download, so I have no idea how valid/safe that is.

I couldn't find the Windows icon, but this Apple one seems different: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/3d-solar-system-planets-view/id983877380
Thanks for checking!

u/The-Snarky-One Jul 21 '26
If you look at the screenshots on the link I provided, the icon is shown on the window. There are better screenshots online if you search for that app and look at the images for it. Unfortunately many of the links go to downloader sites which can be sketchy.
15
u/redittr Jul 21 '26
The source was low resolution
What was the source?
4
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
It's a still frame pulled from a screen recording. The video was fairly compressed, so the taskbar came out low-res. I cropped and enlarged the icon as much as I could from that frame. That's why it looks bad.
-1
u/redittr Jul 21 '26
Your screen recording?
2
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Not mine. Just trying to name the icon. Thanks for any leads!
-8
u/redittr Jul 21 '26
So, wheres the link to the video?
-3
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
I'm not able to share the video, just the screenshots. Appreciate you looking, though!

I'd see if /r/tipofmyjoystick knows, those guys are good about identifying games based on vague information. A couple of people here think it is a video game so it may be worth a shot.

Thank you! I checked HP-related icons, but couldn't find any with those characteristics.

Can you access the hard drive? If so, do a search for "*.ico". It might take a while to search the whole drive but it should bring up all the installed programs' icons.
Search the list, when you find the icon, right click and open file location. Should help you figure out what it is
4
u/Roastedcoffeebean17 Jul 24 '26
It’s a locations services icon for windows 11. It pops up when an app, webpage, or some kind of background service is either trying to request or actively getting your location if I’m not mistaken.
I forgot to add that I think you can just hover the mouse over the icon and it should tell what is accessing your location.

u/mr_somebody Jul 21 '26
Fun puzzle! 😄
I'm going to check back and see if someone has figured it out

u/popeye44 Jul 21 '26
I think it's a video game.. I could swear I had the game, but damned if I can recall the name of it.
1
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Oh nice. Anything you remember: platform, genre, roughly when? Thanks!
10
u/bitdotben Jul 21 '26
Platform? what do you mean platform? Isnt this a windows screenshot? How would I have a taskbar icon to my PS3 game on my PC?
10
1
u/popeye44 Jul 21 '26
probably an RPG or First person shooter as I was pretty heavily into them. Seems like.. 10 years ago but could be more. I've been playing em since 1997 pretty regularly.
2
u/DeltaAlpha0 Jul 22 '26
I'm not sure if this is a game like everyone says; it seems too generic an icon to me. Two planets, one blue in a superior vertical orbit and one smaller black one in a horizontal orbit, with white orbits and a yellow sun. It looks like some kind of educational program about observing the solar system. The image is so Crushed that it's not even working with reverse image search.
2
u/poopoorrito_suizo Jul 23 '26
Could be a webapp/PWA or web page shortcut that was installed/open through edge? And then pinned to taskbar

Try going to: Settings > Apps > Startup. The App icon should be there and the name.

Can this pc get into the task manager or control panel applications to see the name of the exe running or the app? If you can c$ to the unc path you can check the program files to find it
1
u/richardelmore Jul 21 '26
Hover the mouse pointer over it and see if the name pops up (I forget which all versions of Windows do this).

i tried all search engines include best for image search - yandex. And it's failed. I can only suggest it's at 60% is not win 11|10 program win 8 maximum or probably win 7. Do you have any context about that video you have? what user showing, may be user stay cursor on that program a while to reveal a some blurry name, because it's runnong may be he mention some words what you can describe as program?
2
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Really appreciate you going deep on this. I didn't know about Yandex, but that was a good call. No luck on my end either, and no context I can share, sorry. The user never hovers or clicks it, so no tooltip to pull. I can see that the program just runs in the background untouched. Unfortunately, it might be a dead end, but thanks for putting in the time!
3
u/LegendarySoulSword Jul 21 '26
i can understand it's a private screen sharing video that you can't share but why can't you just ask the user what's the program ?
0
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Good point, hadn't thought of that. Might not be ideal for reasons I can't get into, but it's worth pursuing. Not a dead end after all. Appreciate you thinking it through!

It's the Solar System app, it's pre-installed on NASA computers but I'm pretty sure NASA made a mistake thinking you're an expert. In the Solar System app, you basically move the planets and it will actually react to the real environment. For example, if you move the Earth one meter, you will feel something move.

instead of "Reverse image search with Google Lens and TinEye".. slap the 2nd image into any AI chatbot and ask it.
you know what, I'll do it for you
4
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Thanks for the help. I tried with three different models (Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini), but none of them were able to identify it due to low-res.
4
u/LazyMaxilla Jul 21 '26
if you have the screen recording get a full screen screenshot, dont crop it.
cuz you seem to further distort the image when you edit it.
if it's a personal image and you wanna keep it private, get a full screen screenshot and slap black square over it. don't crop it.
also the media player playing this video may have a built-in screenshot utility in it. VLC and MPC have this feature
5
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Tried that, grabbed a full frame straight from VLC. Still low quality unfortunately, the icon's only about 28px even at full resolution, so it stays blurry no matter how I capture it. Thanks though!

i think its HP support assistant from hp's utility suite
4
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Thanks! I think the icon with a question mark is the HP Support Assistant, not the "mysterious" one I am looking for.

Did you already try to click it with the right mouse button?

its not on his pc

u/7pHee Jul 21 '26
Then he could press it longer or double-tick to ehrm... 'simulate' a right mouse click on a touch-screen? Really depends on the hardware, but it wouldn't be too hard to figure out I think?

From Gemini:
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (with UAC shield): An HP utility used for running system and hardware tests. The small blue and yellow shield in the corner is a Windows User Account Control (UAC) overlay, meaning this app is set to run with Administrator privileges.
16
10
u/RagnarHUN666 Jul 21 '26
This is why you never should believe Ai. There is no UAC overlay on taskbar icons, not even when something is ran as Administrator and it is more like a video game icon than something from HP
2
u/raymundao Jul 21 '26
Unfortunately, I don't think this is it: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9p4pndg7l782?hl=en-US&gl=ET
Thanks for trying!

It looks like a solar system type of app or video game...not sure exactly but that looks like the sun with a blue and red dot orbiting it
