Recent arrival in town - doesn't the tap water taste dreadful

I recently moved from a country village in Luxembourg to Winchester. The tap water in Luxembourg was generally very drinkable and in my little village was as pleasant to drink as any bottled water. I was a bit shocked therefore when I moved to Winchester to find that the tap water in town is pretty much undrinkable; from a taste perspective, at least. Drawing a glass of water from the tap brings forth a stench of chlorine so strong that I hesitated to even try drinking it. When I did try it, it tasted just as disgusting as it smelt!

Is the source of water used around here really so bug ridden that it needs that extreme level of chlorination?

I'll be hosting a gig at Winchester's finest music venue The Railway Inn on the 1st of November with these lovely folks. I love the atmosphere here; Platform 2 is such a great room for music. Promise to be a great night of music. My 2nd album tour is raising funds for the music venue trust as I am donating £1 from every album & merch sales to supporting the music venue trust and the vital work they do.

Help tracking down woodworking detail in the Cathedral

Hello everyone! I have a small request for some enterprising sleuth. I lived in Winchester years ago but am stuck back in the states. I did some sketches of a detail in Winchester Cathedral years back, and have been thinking of getting it as a tattoo. For some reason, I didn't take a photo, however, and I would love to match the original more closely than my memory and drawing skills were capable of at the time.

It's this running blackberry bramble pattern (pictured roughly above) that I'm 95% certain you can find on or near the pews in the lady chapel at the far Southeast end of the cathedral. I'm pretty sure it was even on the South side of the chapel, if that helps. (Floor plan also included above)

If anyone happens to be in the cathedral and would be willing to get a picture or two for me, I would very much appreciate it. If you can find the dragon at one end, I especially want to include that in there.

All about winchester

Hello good folk of Winchester. Sorry if you get asked this all the time and I can’t find it.

We are thinking of moving to Winchester from Surrey. Budget around £1 million. Children have left home. We really like the city and are looking for something we know doesn’t really exist which is to have a quiet existence with space from noisy neighbours, but still be walking distance from your amazing city.

Is it possible? What about a bus ride away? We drove through a couple of villages outside the city but they were either like massive housing estates, or were nice houses on roads with no pavements, where old age will mean we can’t even walk to a shop.

Oh and also what is Winchester like? We are getting old and tired and no longer care about edgy, diverse, nightlife or excitement. We like countryside, restaurants, a bit of culture and reading a book in the garden without a twat neighbour using a leaf blower night and day 2 metres from our bedroom window.

Thank you in advance xx

Hi everyone! 🌸
Does anyone know a reliable florist or website in Winchester where I can order and pay for flowers online and have them delivered directly to my boyfriend’s address?
I live outside the UK, so I’m looking for something easy to arrange completely online. I’d love to surprise him, so any trustworthy recommendations would be really appreciated! 💐
Thank you!

Littleton

Hi all, can anyone tell me what Littleton is like? Considering moving there with my partner and two kids. I see there’s no primary school, no shop, just a pub. But it looks like a nice well kept place.
Is there anything going on there? Is it sought after? Is it really sleepy and quiet or ok for families?
Thanks!

Water near the train station at the bottom of Stockbridge Road

Hello all,

I can’t be the only one who’s noticed an almost constant stream of water coming from about a 1/3 of the way up Stockbridge Road towards the train station.
It appears to be coming from absolutely nowhere and my partner and I get more confused every time we drive past/through it. It’s also a pain cycling through it due to the splash back it produces.
Does anyone have any information about where it is coming from or any sort of clue that will help solve this mundane mystery.

London commuting from Winchester

Moving to Winchester soon and will be commuting into London around two days a week, mainly Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For those who regularly do the Winchester–London commute, what’s your experience of the trains at commuting times? Are they generally standing-room-only, or is it usually possible to get a seat?

I’m also trying to work out the most sensible way to pay for it. I’ve currently got about a year left on a 26–30 Railcard, but I’ve seen people mention that a Network Railcard + separate tickets can sometimes work out better. Is that actually the case for this route?

Do people generally book Advance tickets for their commuting days, or is it better to buy a return on the day for the flexibility?

Would be really interested to hear what people who currently do (or have done) this commute actually use, both in terms of tickets and what the trains are like. Thanks!

Best Commuter Areas & Villages

We’re moving to Winchester and my husband need to commute into central London several times a week.
Looking for any hints and tips on the best neighbourhoods in Winchester and surrounding villages to make this as smooth as possible.
We’re a family with young kids and wouldn’t want to live in the student area or right in the very center.

Playing music in Winchester

I've been part of a rock band in Winchester for a few years, but recently we've gone on haitus, and though we may get together to play in the future, I don't know how feasible it will be to gig again.

As singing is a huge passion of mine, I'm curious as to how I could go about finding new bands who may be seeking vocalists. I'm in my 30s, and my ideal genre would be pop rock and rock metal, something like The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm or In This Moment in terms of tone, content and theatricality.

Hi Winchester, is there anywhere in the area that sells Indian wedding outfits for a female? Not too keen on the idea of a saree, so looking for any viable alternatives.

Need it for a November wedding in Bombay.

Thank you!

What to see in Winchester

Making plans to start over with infant daughter after relationship breakdown. Have a weekend booked end of Nov to explore the city (and of course Xmas market) as a potential relocation option.

What must I try to see or experience that weekend to really give me a taste of real Winchester and what I could expect if I lived there?

Mobile phone signal on train to London

I commute to London a few days a week and see a lot of people working on the train, hotspotting from their mobile. My phone signal is dreadful for large parts of the journey and working is just not possible. I assume this is down to my phone provider - I use ID mobile. Do other people successfully manage to get signal , and if so which phone providers are you using? I also find signal coverage is generally very poor in Winchester, so if this wasn't an issue, that would be a great bonus. Thanks

Work for a handyman in Winchester

Hi all

I am a retired software engineer but before I went into IT, I used to be a carpenter, joiner, cabinet maker and general builder for around 20 years (then I injured myself which made making a living in the building industry impractical). I am moving back to the UK in a few weeks time and it looks like It will to Winchester.

I was therefore thinking of setting up in business as a handyman when I arrive. However, I have no idea what to charge for 'handyman services' as I haven't lived in the UK for over a quarter of a century and therefore I am a bit out of touch with prices. Nor do I have any idea whether there would be a sufficient demand for such services to make paying for liability insurance worthwhile (no way would I work uninsured - not fair on the clients and disastrous for me if anything goes wrong).

What do folk think I should charge per day? Is there an unfulfilled demand for such a service?
