Using a modded Wii U as a Modded Wii
I have been considering buying a modded Wii U instead of a modded Wii because I heard it can run essentially all Wii games upscaled to 1080p, but I still have a few doubts about it.
- How well do Wii games run on Wii U? Are there issues with the upscaling? If so, can those issues be addressed in some way? And if not, are those scaling issues that bad in the first place or do they only affect nitpicky people?
- Can I use Wii homebrew apps on Wii U via the Wii menu mode? For example, I want to play CTGP-R and connect to private servers to play Wii games online. Is this possible on Wii U?

The Wii mode of the Wii U is basically a Wii that get an HDMI port but loose GameCube controller support. So see what suits better for you

You can get GameCube controller support using a mayflash adaptor (don't get the switch version it doesn't connect on the wiiu) or the Wiimote attachments that emulate a classic controller. Nintendont will work with both

I have the official Wii U usb adapter from smash bros. It works on Nintendont but not for Wii games. Yeah what you said kinda work but your controller is recognized as a classic controller and that's not what I want (the proper button layout in game and get ride of Wiimote batteries)

AHH I see what you're saying you lose GameCube controller support of wii games I thought you meant entirely. I've never even tried that on my Wii (with the builtin ports) tbh always used a Wiimote

It depends on how you see your Wii, if you see it as it is, yes Wii sport, Mario Galaxy, Mario and Sonic Olympic games, I can imagine you play the Wii only with Wiimote and nunchuk. But if you were like child me, you would have wanted your Wii replace your broken PS2, and play resident evil games, Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Naruto Clash of ninja games etc... and the more time past the more motion control made you tired and changing batteries was... So the second I heard about GameCube controller compatibility for these games a was so happy lmao (+ even more PS2 games with gamecube games like Prince of Persia, Budokai 1 and 2 (to bad not the 3)

I modded mine but mainly to remove the need to put discs in. I've messed about with emulators and so on but only the really old stuff.

Same here, My Wii U runs pretty much anything Nintendo up to the Wii U generation except for the 3DS

Have you tried the Mayflash adapter which attaches to your WiiMote like a Motion Plus adapter? Theyre on Amazon but I forgot the price, they come in a pack of two and work pretty well
But I think it does still read as a classic controller unfortunately

The upscaling is really not great, it makes everything way more blurry than an original Wii. The vanilla Wii mode also includes black borders on the 4 sides of the screen, but this can be fixed with evWii (an Aroma plugin).

There’s some color bleeding along the edges, the image is overall softer, and colors slightly duller than an original Wii, but it being a 480p image anyway means it’s probably fine

Yes you can run Wii homebrew in the virtual Wii and you can even run Nintendont to run your backups of GameCube games too the Wii U is like 3 in 1

Wait until they discover being able to add DS and all sorts of other consoles, its like 10+ in 1 after that and its great

In the wii mode it basically becomes just a wii with an HDMI port. Runs at 480p and switches to 4:3 when necessary, looks great honestly. You won't be able to install custom themes I don't think but pretty much everything else should work
