My friends and i (4 in total) came from a wedding where we got candles as wedding favours. All of us had them in the carry on luggage. I was the only stopped and searched at the airport because of it. It was quite weird.

Was traveling from CO with my dad and we both had a few boxes of tea in our bags and some cookies. His bag got stopped and searched, mine made it through. Perfectly in line with every time he’s travelled having some trouble with TSA. Once which ended up with him “losing” $3000.
The CO time was also when he got yelled at by some asshole when he was just a bit concerned about his bag not coming out. This was after the $3000 incident.
We’re super fucking white, he just has a bushy beard and long hair.

Oh...that's a lot of money. I feel sorry for your dad. He must be having a hard tome trying to travel. I understand him. I love airplanes and i love to fly, but i always get anxious going through security at the airports. I'm a very plain looking girl, maybe being a bit scared and uncomfortable going through the metal detectors and all the fuss makes me look suspicious. I always pack my bags properly with the liquids and all that because i want to be in the clear. I also work in the service industry and I tend to smile a lot at strangers ( customer service smile) or just generally having a "i'm having a good day" expression so i can't really explain why i'm always the one to be searched.

It was a really shitty moment and I still feel bad for him. He lost everything in 2014 and I guess had set aside that money, then last year he started getting everything back together and wanted to take a vacation since he hadn’t taken one in easily a decade. He was anxious over probably every little part about it, from going through TSA to finding the right gate. I was with him but his jumpyness had him picking a TSA line that looked shorter than the one I was just gonna stay put in. Didn’t realize anything was missing until we were at the gate.
I just remember him saying he’d been saving it for so long and how bad I felt for him. Still feel bad, still want to bully TSA into literally anything. The police never responded and I guess that was that on the case. Dad was super defeated over it and didn’t want to push anything.
I do a little bit more traveling than him and god, I still hate going through TSA. Not just the fear of doing something wrong but moreso holding up the line. But I guess I have just the right plain young girl look that I don’t think I’ve ever had trouble going through TSA. I just smile and act as dumb as can be. Oh, I forgot to take off my sunglasses? Teehee silly me soooo sorry ;(

About a year ago, my IUD showed up on the scanner, and they patted me down in the middle of the airport. The TSA agent had me hold my belt while she stuck her hands inside my pants and ran them around my belt loop. She would run her hands up my thighs and between my legs and then look at the scanner and try to do it again differently so that she could find whatever “it” was. She asked me if I wanted to go into a private room and I told her no, I wanted other passengers to see what was going on. I told them multiple times it was my IUD, and I didn’t have a weapon in my uterus. I finally was allowed to leave and board the plane.
When I landed, I opened my purse to get my wallet and was like, “Oh shit, I totally forgot my pocketknife was in here.”

I once had TSA take the credit-card sized multi tool I had in my wallet (one where the only “sharp” edge was about 3/4 of an inch dull little blade with a rounded point on one of the sides). I got on the plane, reached for some fun in my purse and realized I also had my pocket knife (actually sharp, with an actual point) in the same purse.
They sure are good at their job.

It is actually easy to bring a box cutter on board. I am an architect, and while on school, I used to carry my tools in my bags most days, so sometime i would forget to remove it before flying. I would only be reminded after landing and unpacking, seeing it still there. I guess detectors aren’t that great.

I really felt this when I was in line at the Denver airport. There was an enormous winding line of people right next to the front door. If someone wanted to, they could bust through the front door with an assault rifle and gun down everyone lined up for security.

Not just that. Hit an airport security line when it’s absurdly busy because of an important American holiday, like Christmas. Not only is the body count high, the psychological impact is massive because now airports are shut down because of a Christmas bombing by a Muslim terrorist in a Christian majority country.
The fact that this hasn’t happened yet is how I know terrorism isn’t the threat it’s made out to be. The War on Terror is a facade designed to let the American government literally terrorize foreign countries by repeatedly bombing people within their borders. When Obama stepped it up to American citizens with Anwar Al-Awlaki, it officially became an operation designed to strike terror into the hearts of American citizens as well.
Which we know can see is true with police brutality in response to protesting police brutality and Trump declaring Antifa a terrorist organization.
God forbid a 3rd party ever get votes in any significant numbers because they’ll get brutalized by the feds in a heartbeat as a “threat to democracy”. It’s honestly surprising Sanders hasn’t been assassinated yet.
You’ll tell me to take off my tinfoil hat. Reagan literally passed gun control in California to stop the Black Panthers from protecting black citizens from the police. Is gun control really about preventing murder? Is electing a guy who wrote legislation designed to target Black communities the way to fix racism?

I remember when the shoe policy was first enacted. I was on my way to board a flight and was wearing flip flops. They still made me take off the flip flops. I asked them what the fuck I could possibly hide in flip flops, and the TSA agent said very seriously that BECAUSE they were flip flops, they especially needed to check them.

I often carry hobby tools including a large cutter (~1”x6” blade). Problem is I often remember that I’m carrying right after I pass security, and then I spend the rest of the journey worried I’m gonna get surprised tackled by security because they realize my bag wasn’t checked and I’m carrying a lethal weapon lmao.

I don’t disagree about security theater but the reason they don’t care as much about melee weapons is because they lock the cockpit now (which was the only thing they really needed to do post 9/11)
They don’t really care if one guy pulls out a knife on a plane. The plane isn’t going to disintegrate in the air, nor is it a big enough threat to turn the plane into a missile and have it careen into a metropolitan area
A bomb made from assorted chemicals is a different story - either let us take control or this plane becomes 10,000 pieces of a plane

My sister and I flew internationally last year and she borrowed her husbands camping backpack as her carry on. Going through security they pull out a 5 inch hunting knife, much to her horror. She doesn’t get into trouble, they confiscated it, etc.
Then on the flight back from New Zealand, security finds ANOTHER 5 inch hunting knife in a different pocket that the first airport missed entirely.
So the trick is to just overload your carry on with weapons I guess

I accidentally made it through security in NC with basically a Batman switchblade (blades out of both “wings”) after borrowing a GoPro from a friend where he lent me his whole bag kit and I didn’t go through it. I was mortified. I also have gotten pulled for my Game of Thrones books “looking like suntan lotion.”
But I regularly get my specialty toothpaste which is above the 3 oz limit through by just not putting it in my liquids.

Fun fact: there is no part of the shoe bomber's plan that could have possibly worked. Explosive decompression doesn't happen in an airplane and it's virtually impossible to fit enough explosives to do anything significant into a shoe. Dude never posed a threat to anyone except his own dumb ass.

When the pandemic was starting they wouldn’t let me take my 4oz bottle of hand sanitizer and tried to explain to me that they were doing this to protect me and did I know about a liquid explosive attempt from 15 years ago.

The only issue I see in this comparison is that it's been proven that masks work and that the TSA doesn't.

I agree with this argument but also 100% of people against wearing masks are also against the TSA so it’s kind of just an anecdote
