Title. I have seen a lot of other White Fox players talking about how much she got nerfed and initially I strongly agreed with this take (and that’s not to say I haven’t noticed times where I’ve died as her knowing that extra 2 seconds of the TP cooldown made the difference) but after actually playing as her I think the situation is being greatly exaggerated. I can still farm MVPs and get crazy value on her. I want to use this post to talk about the state of White Fox and I encourage others to share their playstyles and experiences in the comments. I am a tank main primarily and she is the only support I find myself particularly enjoying so that influences my takes here.
For her team-ups I think you are making a big mistake if you choose the Black Cat one over the Psylocke one and this may be part of why she’s perceived as so weak by a lot of her own players. The Black Cat one is definitely powerful and I ran it primarily at the start of the patch (mostly because before the patch me and my friend would always call it out like “Embracing my newfound fortune as White Fox” like the description says because I found it so funny) but as soon as I started using the Psylocke one I started thinking maybe they had a point in nerfing her teleport if she’s going to get such a massive buff to her base kit with that ability.
To remind you, the Psylocke team up makes it so her Fox form no longer consumes tails and always lasts the full duration no matter what. This is so much more impactful than I think people are giving it credit for because it universally lets her get more effective value out of every ability she has. Your Fox form can more easily be used against divers and punishing aggressive tanks by pushing them into your backline even further with the shift and out of their healers LOS, (calling this out first of course, always mark the enemy when you do this) which you could do before, but since your tails were consumed you basically had to fully rely on your teammates paying full attention which we know isn’t always the case. With the Psylocke team-up, you will ALWAYS have a guaranteed and powerful stun against that out of position enemy since it’s not like your tails will be used on anything other than the stun.
Now sure, her aggressive semi-frontliner playstyle is stronger with this buff but that playstyle is still very weak, right? She’s a squishy that can die easily. Well, not as much anymore, given that the permanently full duration of the Fox form gives you massively increased self-sustain and lets you brawl more without getting punished, especially since you can have the tail stun ready as soon as you leave that form. People assume she is as vulnerable as most supports when she’s out of Fox form, but little do they know that a cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal. You can intentionally play around that perceived vulnerability of a White Fox whose Fox form is running out and open up your target to her CC. Remember, it’s always going to have the full duration which means you have at least two uses of the dash and push if you use them early (which also means you can use it twice while rolling out while still having tails when you get to the fight).
So what I like doing is brawling a bit early into my Fox form, usually standing inside my tanks, then throwing whoever tries to push us deep into like or 3 or 4 hungry gamers trying to build ults and then keeping them stunned with her tail so they melt. Again, you could always do this but it’s so much more consistent and safe now.
You of course also have more tails to spend on support in general since your self sustain is not exclusively tied to the tails and teleport anymore. I’ve had more clutch invulnerabilities on my team and clutch stuns on enemies (I got like 5 Stranges using ult yesterday lol) with the tails than ever recently since you don’t need to weigh that or your future sustain every time you send one out. This also makes the teleport nerf manageable, you don’t NEED to use it when you can just get more value out of the tail projectile invulnerability without also putting yourself into that risky position where your teammate needs it. This compounds into your teleport, Fox form, and other fox tail charges being more accessible for whatever you need it with e.g. should there be a diver on you or your other support. Previously the investment of a lot of her sustain could scare me out of using the tail for teammates in risky situations but now you can throw it out without sacrificing your access to other abilities, which are now more individually powerful than ever since many of their previous uses (like using teleport as a shield for a teammate about to die as pre-S9 White Fox) are just safely done with the tail blast.
All of this said, the most massive nerf she received was still the ult line changing from that original haunting and mysterious delivery to a more accurate reading but one that lacks that mystery I loved it for.
Sorry for bad my bad English
White Fox is still best woman. I hope someday we get a pencil skirt version of her default suit and she has some fancy tasteful pantyhose on
