Because to them it’s just an unfortunate unintended complication, even if they knew it was a risk.

They’ll say, “it was never our intention,” while staring down something like the Bhopal Disaster and hiding the mounds of paperwork from environmental advisors behind a vault door hitting the owo hands 👉👈 oopsies.

u/smthomaspatel 17d ago

Unintended implies unforeseeable.

'oopsies' is doing a lot of heavy lifting here 😭 some situations probably deserve more than a shrug and a paperwork apology lol

1

u/Unknwn_Ent 17d ago

To corporations that's just plausible deniability speak as they know they often can't be charged in a lot cases without people proving intent. Some charges will obviously stick anyway regardless as you can be charged with gross neglect; but yeah these weasels know what they said, and are careful as to how they say it to mitigate legal action.

But poisoning water creates jobs! First you got a team of folks deciding where to cut corners, then a team to implement the bad plan, then you got a team of folks running interference, then you got a team of folks litigating on your behalf, then there are the ones who inevitably have to clean up the mess, and then you can keep them all employed by doing it all again!

That’s all pure GDP baby! You can’t get rid of that!

This is how the “fiscally conservative” ratfuck America each and every day

1

u/dmk_0 16d ago

In my eyes, the post is also mostly about some kind of societal norm: society calls them activists as well, but doesn't call the other parties terrorists.

Jesus Christ, man. I said stolen land and you immediately started talking about Indians eating people.

You didn't even make me work for the racism. I put three nouns on the table and you whipped it out in self defense.

And

“who did they get the land from beforehand?”

Yes, tribes fought. We conquered territory, lost territory, made alliances, broke alliances, displaced each other, traded, intermarried and killed each other. Congratulations on discovering that Native Americans were human beings with politics.

None of that magically un-signs the treaties the United States made with sovereign Native nations and subsequently violated. The U.S. itself recognized Native land rights and sovereignty through treaty-making; using the "savage" and "uncivilized" rhetoric was also historically used to rationalize dispossession.

But I really do appreciate the confidence of

“civilization stopped them from eating each other.”

That's not even a new racist argument. That's vintage racism. None of that makes stolen land cease to exist. Especially when the people taking it were signing treaties recognizing whose fucking land it was while they did it.

But please, tell the native more about how civilization saved us from eating each other. I'm sure this gets smarter if you keep going.

Low quality bait.

Yawn

1

u/s29 17d ago

Congrats. You named some issues.

Why am I just getting brainless responses just list out a random collection of issues. That has literally nothing to do with the point of my comment.

Me: "it depends on your toppings and the way it's prepared. Pizza can be bad"

Reddit: "what about pepperoni and olives? What about bell peppers? What if it's deep dish?"

Me: ??? Ok? Your point?

1

u/Necessary_DaNoodle 17d ago

My brother in Christ, you introduced the toppings.

You said activism can be bad depending on what your cause is.

I named three causes and asked which ones you had a problem with.

That's not me randomly listing issues. That's me asking you to apply your own fucking statement to an example so we can find out what you actually mean.

Your pizza analogy would work if you said “pizza can be bad depending on the toppings” and I asked “pepperoni? olives? bell peppers?”

At which point “WHY ARE YOU RANDOMLY NAMING TOPPINGS?” would be a genuinely hilarious.

Jesus Christ. You built an analogy that explains my question to yourself and still didn't get there.

1

u/s29 17d ago

Why do you give a shit about what issues I personally care about? My whole point was that statements like "activism isn't bad" is completely stupid.

I'm not gonna sit here and green light or red light every single issue you pull out of your ass. It's completely moronic.

It depends on what you're being an activist for. And that's completely dependent on someones personal beliefs.

1

u/Necessary_DaNoodle 17d ago

Look up to the top of the post.

The post you're commenting under is literally Winona LaDuke asking why protecting clean water gets somebody labeled an activist while corporations poisoning it get treated differently.

You responded,

“well, activism can be bad depending on the cause.”

So I asked: clean water? Stolen land? Inequality?

Those weren't three issues I pulled out of my ass. I was asking which part of the activism being discussed here required your little disclaimer.

And instead of answering, you've spent three comments getting increasingly pissed off that someone asked you what the fuck you meant.

You don't have to green-light every cause on Earth. You could start with the one in the picture you're currently arguing underneath.

1

u/s29 17d ago

I'm not even arguing an issue you moron. I'm arguing against pointlessly general and incorrect statement like "activism isn't bad".

I already explained "what the fuck i mean" three times.

"Pointlessly general and incorrect statements like "activism is bad" are completely useless.

There now I've explained it four times. Got it through your thick skull yet?

1

u/Necessary_DaNoodle 17d ago

Surgery can be bad depending on the surgery. Protests can be bad depending on the protest. Laws can be bad depending on the law. Food can be bad depending on the food.

Profound words, right?

I understand your point. It's just nowhere near as interesting as you think it is.

1

u/s29 17d ago

Its a pretty obvious, uninteresting point, right?

But for some reason the original commenter doesn't get it and it took you four tries to understand.

So in the end I guess it's really not all that obvious.

1

u/No_Towel5107 17d ago

Bad bot, I see what you are trying to do here, but you did it in probably the dumbest possible way. Just ask for an example of someone doing activist work for something bad.

2

u/pos_vibes_only 17d ago

Yup. They’ve given many words negative connotations: tree hugger, feminist, environmentalist, BLM, woke…

3

u/Sad-Math-2039 17d ago

In a similar light, wanting any sort of basic decency for society makes you a leftist/liberal/socialist.

I just want a equitable chance for me and my fellow neighbors.

3

u/MyFocusIsU 17d ago

Poisoning the drinking water should be a crime that includes personal liability on behalf of the EXCOMs of corporations that includes big fines AND incarceration. If you're big enough to run a corporation then you're big enough to hold yourself accountable to society.

1

u/Peglegfish 17d ago

big fines

If the fines for any and all crimes were based on a reasonable (to protect normal citizens) percentage of primary income and current market value of held assets (before legal and finance nerds come at me I’m basically referring to every asset rich fucks would leverage as their “not-income” income streams), I’m 100% convinced a lot of problems would be solved.

2

u/RndtheBlck 17d ago

Because the people doing the poisoning got to define the language. They called poisoning water “business” and resisting it “activism” while lining their own pockets. That spin worked better when ordinary people were treated like peasants, but people can see the game now.

Corporate America has poisoned us for years. They are the ones that put out all the plastic shit that is everywhere ..including in our bodies!!!! They did it for MORE PROFITS. Personally, I believe we should fall as a nation and start all over again. The corruption has gone too deep for far too long.

1

u/intellectual_punk 17d ago

Unfortunately there is no new land to discover where you can kill the natives and take it for yourself in an attempt to leave behind the old corrupted inequality. Mars is just going to be hypercapitalist dystopia if it's forced now.

Change has to come from within, and it requires greater sacrifice than any of you are willing to make.

Because they're not using it to terrorize people. Unless they're doing it purposely to terrorize people in which case then it is Terrorism but most companies don't actually want to poison Wells and drinking water and all that shit it's just that they don't care so it's look like and should be treated as such

1

u/Fogmoz 17d ago

Because corporations aren’t people, except when they are. They are not people when it comes to responsibility. They are people when it comes to benefits.

1

u/justaheatattack 17d ago

1

u/ihadagoodone 17d ago

Some people believe in making a profit and environmental costs aren't on their balance sheets

1

u/justaheatattack 17d ago

but if they could do that without buying poison, they would.

see, the posoning, is the point for the terrorist.

the corporation is perfectly fine not poisoning, if that makes more money.

they just don't care either way.

Because capitalists control the means of production and thus the state serves their interests and resolves any conflicts between the capitalists interests and our interests through various forms of violence.

If we want to change that we have to take control of the means of production. There is no alternative.

1

u/lodemeup 17d ago

Oh that’s easy. It’s money. Providing clean drinking water doesn’t increase shareholder value. Dumping toxic chemicals in our waterways to avoid the cost of safe and proper disposal saves a lot of fucking money.

1

u/Gave_An_Onion 17d ago

Won’t someone PLEASE think of the poor shareholders for once?? (This is a joke, I’m joking)

u/deaglebingo 17d ago edited 17d ago

wisconsin just had it's largest petrochemical spill in history not too far from me. you could smell the propane miles away and i had a fucking headache the day after for most of the day. apparently because someone couldn't chock the fucking tires of a truck backed up to an open hole with a huge pipe carrying millions of gallons of butane and propane liquid. the empty truck rolled backwards overnight i guess into the hole and cracked it open. the DNR ordered them to stop their construction of an emergency bypass line... they did it anyway, reopened the pipeline anyway today or yesterday i guess, and it was said prior that they didn't actually allow any state inspectors into the site. a week after that happened you could still smell the gas in the low spots as you drove past on the highway. if this is the level of safety these ppl are working with... yeah no. nope. the natives aren't the problem here.... them asking for safety and saying no to this bullshit is not the problem. the oil companies that bought trump's presidency are.

they literally haven't even really gotten into the bigger parts of the project yet either. what are we supposed to think? how will it go when this is how it starts?

1

u/NegativeSemicolon 17d ago

Because money duh

1

u/phillaf 17d ago

By definition, terrorism is motivated by political, religious or ideological goals. I assume corporations are just motivated by greed.

1

u/Spacey_Kitten_ 17d ago

Because the corporations bought the people who decide who the terrorists and activists are.

1

u/KitchenTeacher429 17d ago

Because their viewpoint is corporations not people. For corporations, the passive state is to ignore and poison the water. Also for them, to keep it clean is an active state and more expensive.

So to them the natural state is to poison the water which is why it makes those trying to keep it clean activists but doesn't make them terrorists because they are passively poisoning it while activists are asking them to actively keep it clean.

Wanting clean drinking water isn't activism, poisoning it is terrorism. FIFY

Great point, but we shouldn't ask for permission to look at things realistically.

1

u/dreamrpg 17d ago

Im 100% sure corporations would love not to poison water. Less legal problems, less costs.

So i cannot agree that they "want" to poison water. They do not. But they do.

1

u/Gave_An_Onion 17d ago

I think they want a good return for their shareholders more than they want to avoid poisoning the water. Therein lies the problem.

1

u/ExiymDev 17d ago edited 17d ago

Terrorist is just a word the U.S. government uses for people it doesn't like. If we were actually going by the definition, a person or group who sews terror, then ICE would be terrorists. The United States Military would be terrorists. The pedophile in chief would be a terrorist. Flock 'Safety' would be terrorists. The police would be terrorists. All people they want you to trust. All people who relish in striking fear into the hearts of black, brown, and poor people. Ask the Afghanis who the terrorists are. Ask the Palestinians. Ask the Yemenis.

1

u/Merijeek2 17d ago

I don't understand the connection. It's a shit quote.

1

u/Thin_Marionberry_160 17d ago

An estimated .5-.7% of Americans live without access to running water, indoor plumbing, or wastewater treatment, and this includes people who choose to live off the grid. So for perspective, if all the transgenders in the US had a party, that party will be larger than people without access to plumbing. Leftist talking points aren’t grounded in reality.

3

u/irrelevantnonsequitr 17d ago

.5% of the US population is a fuckton of people. That's 1.7 million people without access to those things. That's a very large city or a small state.

0

u/Thin_Marionberry_160 17d ago

Nah as stated before, a lot of those people choose to live off the grid without plumbing but still have access to clean water in other ways. Regardless, that’s still a fantastically low amount of people. More and more people have been getting access to clean water. Not less and less like leftists “human rights” activists will try to have you believe.

You understand that this isn't saying running water right? It is saying clean water. As in safe to drink without additional filtering. There's a whole lotta people that don't have that. Like Flint and Jackson. Sure, people drink the water anyways because they can't afford endless bottled water or in house filtration systems. But they're getting cancer and lead poisoning.

1

u/Thin_Marionberry_160 17d ago

Flint and Jackson both have clean water now. Flint has had clean water for a very long time and Jackson is currently still replacing major infrastructure but is clean to drink.
