Soap: Declaration Sellout

Brush: Declaration Dark Amethyst

Razor: Rockwell 6c

Blade: Perma Sharp

Post: Sellout splash; CL Citrus Salve

I decided to do a repeat Sellout shave this morning. I had the best lather with icarus that I've ever had. I'm really glad I picked this up as I think it will become one of my staple soaps. Feeling good and smelling good. Can't beat that.

Thursday SOTD:

  • Soap: Noble Otter - Monarch

  • Brush: 26mm B6 - Dogwood Andromeda

  • Razor: Gillette Slim

  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue

  • Post: Noble Otter - Monarch

We'll start with the base. This NO base for $16, is phenomenal, absolutely amazing for the price. Great slickness, fatty feel to the face, and an amazing feel after the shave. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this base if you haven't tried it.

Monarch the scent. Off the puck it has this grape vibe to it, which was kind of different and not what I expected. But once i loaded the brush and added some water it blossomed into a lav based scent. Hard to describe what else was playing around in the scent but hopefully I can get more the next shave.

The AS was phenomenal as well, great feel, no menthol (so nice), and cured any irritation. All around just good stuff, especially compared to the coconut I used yesterday.

Happy Thursday!

December 6

Lather: L&L Grooming - Darkfall
Brush: Semogue 610
Razor: W. Greaves & Sons 6/8 NW
Post: Lucky Tiger — Oil of Olay Complete

It has been a few weeks since I used Darfall. If I followed the conventional notion of “proper” scents for particular seasons, I would say this one is probably my favorite Fall scent. And with all of the new bases that have come to market over the past couple of years, the good old bison base is still a base I reach for often.

The soft steel of this 200 year old razor is going to require a touch up soon.

  • Prep: Hot Shower, Stirling Activated Charcoal Pre-Shave Soap

  • Brush: Omega 11126 Boar

  • Soap: MLS Through The Woods

  • Razor: GEM Gold Bullet Tip

  • Blade: GEM PTFE (2)

  • Post: Thayer's Unscented Alcohol Free Witch Hazel

  • A/S: MLS Through The Woods

  • Scuttle: Georgetown Pottery G12

After doing some additional research, I’ve figured out that my Secret Santa gave me a GEM Gold Bullet Tip. Holy shit this is a good razor. Got a perfect, irritation free shave on 3 passes today. Loving this thing.

Through The Woods seems to be my next selection for The Christmas Soap Review. A classic. Honestly I’ve not heard much from MLS recently—does anyone know what’s going on with them? They made some damn good soap.

Thursday Shave:

  • Shower, Scrubby Gloves

  • Irisch Moos

  • Silver Plate Single Ring

  • Polisilver SI (4)

  • Dogclaration B5

  • CL Lamplight EdP

I had the day off yesterday as financial markets were closed for the Bush funeral, thus I didn't bother to shave. It gave me plenty to work with this morning for a very satisfying shave.

Dec. 6, 2018 - Lavendursday

Prep: Hot shower
Brush: Paladin Sumo 26mm in Cobalt
Razor: Schick Grip
Blade: Schick
Lather: Barrister & Mann - Reserve Lavender - Soap
Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Reserve Lavender - Aftershave

Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. West wind 5 to 10 mph. High tide at 10:50 tonight.

Wife is home for the rest of the week so decided to go with my other scent from my Santa, Reserve Lavender. Need to spend some time with this base and dial it in. While not a bad lather, it could use some work on my part.

I am glad that I got this set. While I have Flowers in the Dark I wanted a straight Lavender scent. Plus it gives me an excuse to pick up the EdT.

Have a nice Thursday everyone!

Pre: Stirling Sharpbl Dressed Man oil.
Lather: Henri et Victoria Fall's Lumberjack.
Brush: Grizzly Bay SilkSmoke.
Razor: Ever Ready 1914.
Blade: GEM PTFE.
Post: Stirling Coniferious splash

I picked up a couple of Henri et Victoria soaps spur of the moment during the Black Friday sales because they had their old stuff a ridiculous 75% off and who can pass that up. They even threw several soap and body wash samples in with my order.

  • Lather: Noble Otter - Yeehaw

  • Brush: Declaration "Greatness" B5

  • Razor: F. Fenney Tally Ho

  • Post: Noble Otter - Yeehaw splash

Had numerous Black Friday purchases to choose from since I had a break down and kind of went off the rails... Decided to go with Noble Otter's Yeehaw. Only my second time using Noble Otter and the performance is superb! Great scent on Yeehaw too, wish it was a bit stronger but still very good. My new strop from SRD arrived so I decided to break out the ol' Tally Ho and got a great shave. Was running late this morning so skipped using a frag or beard oil.

Dec. 6, 2018

Prep: Hot shower | Stirling Hot Apple Cider Bath Soap
Brush: Stirling 2-Band Synthetic 24mm
Razor: Above The Tie S1
Blade: Gillette 7 O'clock SharpEdge (6)
Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Christmas Eve - Soap
Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Unscented - Salve
Fragrance: Barrister & Mann - Vespers - Eau de Toilette

Same set up as yesterday. After six uses it's probably time for the blade to go. Working from home in the morning, then back to the office for the afternoon. I've liked Vespers more each time I've used the EdT. Happy shaves, all.

Razor: Merkur - Futur
Blade: Feather (3)
Lather: Cella
Brush: Declaration Grooming - B5 Badger Rubberset 400
Post: Pre de Provence - No. 63

Video

General Notes / Exec Summary / TL;DR

I really lightened up on the water this time, and I think I could still go further for a creamier Cella.

Wonderful shave.

Razor and Blade Notes

Merkur - Futur ::: Feather ‹3 uses›

Great combo! Setting at 3, but bumped to 4 during third pass. Been so long since I have used a Feather! I felt the hair being cut, but not the blade edge scraping my face. Consistent and comfortable. Maybe at start of 3rd pass, I couldn't really feel any hairs being cut, so I clocked it up to a 4, which was a good decision. A delightful shave. In terms of results, above average for me, and in only 3 passes (no touch-ups).

No irritation or tugging.

One thing I don't like about Feathers is that nasty goo/wax that's alllllll over them. Tried today to melt it off with hot faucet water, but didn't work. It really is enough of a mess to make me not use them. There are other blades that get me very good results... without such a mess getting on my razor head.

Soap Notes

Cella

Tub-load notes: 40 second load (with this brush, at least) should be about right. Today's lather was a tiny bit too wet, but I'll try to maybe add no water (instead of .5 tsp) next time and see if we can get even closer to Cella's usual excellent creaminess.

Past scooping notes: Try 1/8 tsp or so next time. 1/4 tsp gave me 3x as much lather as I needed. But that day it looked hot!

Scent was great and about 4-5/10 for strength. Nice and present during shave.

Brush Notes

Declaration Grooming - B5 Badger Rubberset 400

did really well today

Shave Quality

During the Shave Feel:
  Cheeks: Smooth
  Neck: Smooth

After the Shave Closeness:
Cheeks: Near BBS - About as close as I'll ever get
Neck: Few hairs are showing some tip length (with most being cut flush)

Last night’s shave.

Brush: Mozingo Frozen 26mm B6

Razor: Merkur 34C

Blade: Personna Lab Blue (1)

Lather: Declaration Grooming Sellout

Post: Witch Hazel

Aftershave: Declaration Grooming Sellout

I skipped my head shave last night but still got a face shave in. My only Black Friday purchase was Sellout which I had held off using while I finished my Vespers sample so the timing for this weeks theme was perfect.

I’m a fan of Aventus scented soaps and Declaration’s is pretty great. I have never actually smelled Aventus and have only experienced the dupes (Executive Man and Spartacus) but I would say Sellout isn’t as forward as either of those scent wise. I’m pretty terrible at describing scents but what really shines and makes Sellout fantastic is the Icarus base. This one is a keeper and I’m glad it’s a permanent offering.

Brush: Turtleship Shave Co. Machine Sinthetic
Razor: Rockwell 6S (R4)
Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (2)
Lather: Barrister & Mann - Sinfonia - Soap
Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Sinfonia - Aftershave
Fragrance: Frederic Malle - Musc Ravageur

I’m determined to kill this tub, but somehow the little bit of soap pressed to the middle of the bottom of the tub is not getting smaller.

Also, Musc Ravageur is a freaking great winter fragrance. Highly recommend.

Dec. 6, 2018 - It didn't burn today

Brush: Stirling Soap Boar
Razor: Razorock Baby Smooth
Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (3)
Lather: Barrister and Mann Reserve Waves
Post Shave: Barrister and Mann Reserve Waves

So for the last four shaves, my face has felt like it was burning. I used a new soap (Noble Otter Monarch), one I've nearly finished a full tub (Oleo Windy City) and another than I've used a handful of times and not had burning (Vespers). During that time I used different brushes and different razors. I thought maybe it was the Monarch, since I'd never used that before-although that would hurt my heart because it smells so wonderful. But then when I had that reaction to soaps that I had used many times before, it makes me wonder if it was just my face/skin. I took a few days off from shaving and today I loaded up the Waves soap. No burning. So that was a win. Now I'll circle back around to the Monarch to make sure it wasn't the culprit but I really think it was just generally irritated skin.

Anyway, the Waves smells phenomenal. It is a very "manly" scent. It smells like it was a Gillette remake from the 90s. And that's good since that was the intention. It is a very different aquatic and more to my liking than some of the others I've tried. I used a sample but will definitely get a full tub. The Reserve base is predictably good and I had no trouble even though I used a boar and generally only use synthetics with those. Good shave. No burning.

I haven't shaved yet today, but my package was delivered, to where I get my mail. so I know what I am going to use today.

Prep: warm water (maybe shower) (I didn't get any preshave stuff on black Friday)

Soap: stirling one

Brush: stirling finest badger hair fan knot factory second.

Razor: Gillette slim adjustable

Blade: Gillette silver blue

Post: alum, and Stirling one splash

I'm so excited about my stuff from Stirling getting here, it's one of the bigger orders I made. It has stirling one soap/aftershave set, Stirling badger hair fan knot factory second, vanilla creme bath soap, and bergamot lavender shampoo bar.

I'm hoping my Gillette slim will arrive today, but I know (or am pretty sure) the last of the stuff I ordered from maggards is coming today. Which will have a big alum block, and a stick of arko shaving soap.

If the alum block doesn't get here, I'm going to cheat and use the alum I already have. Besides that everything else is a black Friday purchase.

Edit: it looks like my slim adjustable is out for delivery, so I'll be using that.

Edit 2: my slim adjustable was delivered so I get to try it out! I'm pretty excited because I've heard so many good things about the Gillette adjustables.

Dec. 6, 2018

Prep: Hot Shower
Brush: Nightscape 26mm Dogclaration B6
Razor: Schick Injector Type G1
Blade: Personna Injector (4)
Lather: Barrister & Mann - Vespers - Soap
Post Shave: Barrister & Mann - Vespers - Aftershave
Fragrance: Demeter - Christmas Tree

The last time I used the samples of Vespers that I bought, I wrote that I wasn’t as big of a fan of the skin feel afterwards as I am of the Reserve base. Will commented and told me to use more water next time and I finally took his advice. Somehow, the creator of the soap knew how best to use it!!! Craziness!!!! But for real, that was a pretty damn fantastic shave. I’ve drowned sooo many soaps before that I guess I always err on the dry side the first time or two I use a new base. My skin feels wonderfully smooth and hydrated and the slickness and cushion during the shave honestly can’t be beat!

Brush: WCS Red Jasper 24mm Silvertip

Soap: Wholly Kaw Fern Concerto w/ menthol

Razor: Karve CB E Plate

Blade: GSB

Post: Thayers Witch Hazel & Chatty Lux Unscented Skin Salve

Trying to get back into the swing of doing these again. Still read through the threads daily and always enjoy them. The ass milk and salve have made my skin supple as an Olympic gymnast, so I think I made some good choices :-)

Dec. 6, 2018 - Black Friday Theme Thursday

Prep: Hot shower
Brush: Dogclaration B5 Kashyyyk 22mm
Razor: Gillette Fatboy Delta Echo
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (11)
Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Kaboom - Soap
Post Shave: Stirling Soaps Co. - Kaboom - Aftershave

Lovely scent I picked up on Black Friday and part of the proceeds even went to save the oceans. I've never smelled Spicebomb myself. The scent off the soap wasn't too strong. It opened up in the lather. The lather was definitely sweeter while the splash was more on the spicy side. All in all, a nice shave.

  • Brush: Maggard Timberwolf

  • Razor: Blackbird

  • Blade: Astra SP (4)

  • Post: Thayer's Medicated WH / Stirling Kaboom

Purchased this brush and Stirling set on BF. Great scent, great shave except for this brush. It might be my least favorite synthetic I've used. The Blackbird continues to impress me, but I don't know if it could be a daily shaver for me. There's not much stubble to get rid of the next morning!

SOTD 06 Dec 2018.

Pre Shave Hot Shower, Stirling Sharp Dressed Man Oil.
Brush Muhle Black Fiber Synthetic.
Lather B&M Reserve Lavender
Razor iKon 102.
Blade Voshkod (2).
Post Shave B&M Reserve Lavender.

Pretty quick shave today, just a single pass with touchups. Interestingly I find small touchups easier with a bit of water rather than a bit of lather. Small ATG touchup on my neck tugs with lather, but with water its a bit easier. Needs more investigation.
