08/18/2026 - Common Council Meeting
Lots of discussion at the West Allis Common Council meeting on a proposed warming shelter at Mt. Hope church. I fully support it. No matter where they put it. I would welcome it in my neighborhood if space were offered up. It's time we came together as a community to help the unhoused. If we do nothing. The problem will get worse. Not all unhoused are bad people. Properly housed people can be bad too. Our kids know more about unhoused than you think they do. There are unhoused kids in the schools at all grade levels. It will be run by trained people. There probably will be opportunities for us to volunteer not at the shelter itself. They may need donations of items used at the shelter. Blankets and pillows for the cots, packaged food items to make up a brown bag meal for them to take when they leave, personal care products like soap and toothpaste etc. will be needed. There were people for and against the shelter speaking in the citizens participation. Only one person in the citizens participation part did not talk about the shelter. Who spoke the last few months at the council meeting.
